Hoo-Ray!!  BYU prevailed over Utah State... 51 to 28... and won back the Old Wagon Wheel.   USU played very well in the first half but had some struggles in the second... BYU played better in the second than in the first...

It was an exciting game, and I thought BYU might lose while watching the lst half... I wonder if Jeanne was watching the game... thought about her.... with her  support of USU and mine of BYU...

Go Cougs!!

edit to add:  Tonight at 6:00 PM my PST time, televised on BYU-TV...  the BYU basketball team plays Belmont from back east... a very good team... We'll have to be on our toes to win this one...

2nd edit to add... Just finished watching the BYU - Belmont game... Cougars prevailed to win the game 95 to 81...

When Belmont started playing the first few minutes, they were shooting 3's like crazy and led BYU by double digits... Our guys played hard, gained their bearings and confidence, and started hitting their own 3's... Emery, Fischer... Collinsworth missed a triple-double tonight by one rebound... He would have made history had he put it together...   The second half belonged to the Cougars for sure...

Hey Val,

Care to fill us in on what your (no doubt post hoc ;):D) predictions on the BYU-USU football matchup and the BYU-Belmont basketball matchup, respectively, were?

;)

After the Belmont basketball game, a review was done of Collinsworth's actions/stats... and the NCAA awarded him the last rebound he needed to take the NCAA record for triple doubles... 7 total... he now stands as the lone recordholder for the NCAA, displacing Shaq's old record... I cannot believe that Collinsworth won't get at least one or two more before the season ends to cement his record for some time to come.  Congrats Kyle...

I was shocked to see Mendanhall leave for UVA, especially surprised that it was his decision to leave and that eh was not forced out by BYU. Do you think that it was the frustration of BYU not being part of the Power 5 football conferences and thus no real shot for BYU to make it to a BCS game without a perfect record?

I wouldn't have a clue what motivated his decision.  I do feel for BYU fans.  When Meyers left Utah..I was heartbroken!

I think the reported 3 million that he is getting had a lot to do with his decision.

900,000 (as I saw in one place) to 3,000,000.  Yeah, I would have changed if other things were pretty much equal.

Looks like he was anticipating moving eventually and stayed quite a bit longer than originally expected.

According to this list, Bronco's salary at BYU was $2 million; while this report indicates his new salary at Virginia will start at $3.25 million.

I agree with Cal:  He seemed to be contemplating moving on from BYU long before he actually did.

Wonder who the new coach, and his new offensive coordinator, will be?

Speculation is that the following candidates are being considered (all candidates are LDS, which is one of BYU's requirements for this head coaching position, but greatly diminishes the candidate pool):

Kyle Whittingham, Utah head coach....BYU alum is considered a long shot; Whittingham is already a successful coach in a Power 5 conference and makes close to 3 million a year (reportedly more than BYU is looking to pay, which is around 2 million a year)

Robert Anae, BYU OC....the most likely candidate in my opinion; has familiarity with the program and has been a successful assistant at previous stops

Lance Anderson, Stanford DC.....highly successful coordinator at Stanford and well-regarded in coaching and recruiting circles; Stanford has one of the best defenses in the country on an annual basis, and I imagine the team would look very similar under him (pro-style offense, stout defense) as it did under Bronco

Ken Niumatalolo, Navy head coach....his name keeps popping up and supposedly BYU will be talking with him after Saturday's Navy/Army game; strong character guy with successful head coaching experience, word is that BYU would request that he not implement the triple-option offense that Navy is noted for (that's like asking Urban Meyer to coach at your school, but not utilize his spread offense....not sure how well that goes over with coach Ken)

Kalani Sitake, Oregon St. DC:  BYU alum with no head coaching experience; his defense at OSU was ranked last in the PAC-12 in his first year in Corvallis....I don't see the attraction, other than he is LDS

Darrel Bevell, Seattle Seahawks OC: it has been reported that Bevell is not interested in this position, has no real ties to BYU, hasn't coached in college since the 1990's, and it appears the only reason he is being thrown into the mix is because he is LDS

If I was a betting man, I would go with Rob Anae as being the next BYU head coach

And that is why I am not a betting man.

From the article, it sounds like BYU didn't show enough interest in Anae after Bronco's departure to make Anae want to stay. Of the remaining candidates, I don't see anyone who is as good a fit as Anae seemed to be, outside of Whittingham, who is a real long shot in my opinion.

If I were BYU, I would be angling hard for Lance Anderson from Stanford.

What is the triple option and why is this a problem for BYU?

It's an offensive strategy that was popular decades ago, but now is only used by mid-to-lower level programs. It works for Navy because they play a weaker schedule. It won't work for BYU (or Navy) against the power-conference teams.

Ironically, if you want Whittingham then I think you should cheer for Utah in this year's bowl game. Whatever slim chance there is to get him to switch would be damaged if BYU won.

The triple option is a heavily run-based offense that utilizes a sort of deception/sleight-of-hand strategy to confuse defenses. It is a plodding and slow-moving offense that has been abandoned by all but a handful of college football teams. It can be effective, but watching it is like watching a chess match. It would be tough to sell that offense to a BYU fanbase that has always witnessed high-flying, high-scoring, high-octane offenses that are entertaining and exciting....the triple option is the exact opposite.

I see in the news today that Niumatalolo has agreed to speak with BYU.

I would still take Anderson.

I would guess that Bronco was the highest paid employee on the church payroll.  IMO there is something out of sync when a football coach make more than professors and college presidents.

It would be interesting to compare how much money individual professors and coaches bring in and compare salaries in thatmanner.

My bishop has as I understand brought BYU millions due to his research.  On the other hand some professors might only bring in the money that comes because a program exists, they themselves don't attract any students to go into that program etc.

In 2013, the Wall Street Journal reported that BYU football was valued at 136 million dollars (value of major college football teams); that same year, BYU football generated a little over $7 million in profit (after subtracting operating costs).

If BYU football were to enter a Power 5 conference, that number would jump drastically, due to the TV contracts of Power 5 conferences and the profit-sharing from BCS bowl appearances within those conferences.

Of all BYU sports programs, only 2 generate a profit: football and men's basketball.
