LOSTONE Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Simple title engulfing so much. I am not happy with life. I am not happy with my life. I am bored and feel empty and so unfulfilled with my life that I dread everyday I have ahead of me despite being grateful for all I have. It seems like the things I want the most are the things I have the least of and I have to question myself as to why that is. Is it normal to feel this way? Is it me and something I am not doing right? Is there any hope it will get better if I change what I am doing or work harder at doing something? I honestly don’t know beyond not being happy with life, with my life.I have asked myself in true honesty, what makes me happy? What really makes me feel alive and happy in everyday average life? I took deep time alone in thought about this question and after sometime, I have concluded it’s family. Sounds stupid maybe, but family is what is at the heart of my happiness. It’s what I crave the most and have none to speak of. Hmm, family. People who actually care and love you because you are who you are and you love them back for the same reasons. No games or hidden agenda or stupid meanness. Just the love of family. Amazing...Money is great, but a tool that has limitations of true happiness. Physical property is pretty much the same thing as money. Money and property are not what is going to make me happy with my life. Hmm... Anyways... Just me venting here and I think I am done so I’m closing this out.
name Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Hi LOSTONE, If I may ask, why do you say that you have none to speak of? (Family)
JLHPROF Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Is there any hope it will get better if I change what I am doing or work harder at doing something? Of course there is.In Mormonism there is a wonderful, much quoted scripture: D&C 13020 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated. If we live the laws upon which blessings are predicated God is bound to grant us the blessing we are worthy of, either here or in the world to come. So if we want a blessing, we change our life to be worthy of it.And that doesn't even account for grace, wherein God give us undeserved blessings. So YES, things can get better. 2

Just me venting here and I think I am done so I’m closing this out. I'm learning the only reliable thing that will make me "happy" is nurturing my relationship with my Father in Heaven though I would rather use the term "meaningful" instead of happy. In this way I can be open to much sorrowing and still be growing spiritually. I too feel strength from family and particularly from my wife and three young children. The reality though is that these three kiddos are going to grow into adulthood with their own notions many of which may well run counter to what I consider to be important. In other words, the very strength I now draw from them may well turn to anything but a strength when they grow. I still need to have a relationship to turn to where I know the deal is always going to be for my growth. As a previous poster has mentioned, I too believe that living the laws of God will benefit me though I do not presume to know specifically in what way. There is no scriptural passage that outlines a specific blessing as a result of following a specific law. The promise is only that our lives will be blessed for obedience and nothing more. And yes, grace is that which makes the world go round. If we can tap that level of appreciation I believe we have made great strides. Stiff upper lip, LOSTONE. Find the "meaningfulness" and don't stop ever. 3
UtahTexan Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I have been there. Sometimes, happiness is a choice. We can choose to be happy. And I know it is often difficult. Prayer. Study. And just deciding. 4

Rivers Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I feel that way too sometimes. Life can be hard and unfair. I find that relationships with others is what fosters joy in life. “Friendship is one of the grand fundamental principles of ‘Mormonism’; [it is designed] to revolutionize and civilize the world, and cause wars and contentions to cease and men to become friends and brothers. …"Joseph smith 3
Avatar4321 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I know how you feel. There are times when life isn't terrible fulfilling.I've found the Holy Ghost can fix much of that. When I've felt emptiest it's been the times I wasn't in line with Gods will enough for the Spirit to play a strong part I had done something o chase the Spirit away.I think it's one of the reasons the Lord commands us o be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. So we can receive hat joy and assurance of peace in our dark days.
rpn Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 People who do not feel close to, or do not have the traditional family, create their own families by serving others and developing mutually beneficial interaction. It can be tough to do this, and it may take a while, but it can happen.
Dgal Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Happiness is an attitude that we bring to life. It's not something that *happens* to us based on our circumstances, or at least that is a less mature understanding of happiness.
VideoGameJunkie Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Go see a psychiatrist and get prescribed an antidepressant.
Calm Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) Drugs may help, but given potential side effects I would suggest looking for a therapist that one connects with and after several sessions see if the therapist feels the addition of medication can help. Psychiatrists not being always easy to get into (it can take months depending on where one lives and what one's insurance covers), at that time it might be beneficial to get started through a GP and then if it appears a more complicated medication treatment is needed, then go to the psychiatrist. Drugs without therapy make much less difference than therapy or therapy with drugs when needed. But you need to find a therapist that works will with you and imo avoid the ones that are fringy. Cognitive reality therapists imo are the most successful. Edited March 11, 2015 by calmoriah

Ahab Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Just give it everything you have to give...as much of your time and energy and your heart and soul...all you have to give to FIND someone of the opposite sex to love and then the 2 of you together can make your own family with as many children as you can have.Just don't seem tooo desperate or clingy when you're first starting out. Let it develop slowly, and make getting to know each other fun.I'm assuming you're single, of course, but if you're not and your spouse is of the opposite sex just put more of yourself into your relationship to show how much you love her (or him if you're a man)
Stargazer Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 If you feel this way, the Internet is not where you need to go to find help. Well, you know that there are worse places on the internet to express this feeling, however. Some places would just pile on him and make things worse, but here, at least, we will try to love our Lost One. 2

Kenngo1969 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Happiness is an attitude that we bring to life. It's not something that *happens* to us based on our circumstances, or at least that is a less mature understanding of happiness. As much as I hate to admit this because I wish so many of my circumstances were different, it's true. Perhaps this address, too, has valuable perspective to offer: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2014/04/grateful-in-any-circumstances?lang=eng
