In the recent TribTalk Elder Oaks reminded us that there is an appeals process for disciplinary decisions. My understanding is John Dehlin will not be appealing.

I've never seen or heard of a successful disciplinary appeal where the First Presidency has overturned a stake decision. Has anyone ever heard, seen, experienced a successful DC appeal?

I have but am uncomfortable sharing any details.

I knew a lady that had been molested for years by her then District President Father, she told her priesthood leaders and they didn't believe her. Turns out she, in return, got accused of something and she ended up in a DC. In process of time the district became a stake. From what she told me the DC was not run properly and she ended up getting in hot water herself for this accusation. So, she was outraged. She was of a different nationality and was living in that stake. She appealed to another stake of a different Nationality. So, that Stake President called the Area Presidency. She met with one of the Seventy, who was released a few years back and he overturned her hot waterness and I am not sure whatever happened to the dad

I had a Branch President years who had molested his daughter and was abusive to his wife, both complained but it fell on deaf ears, "oh, he wouldn't do that" and he ended up in a Temple Presidency. He later died and now he can't escape justice. I saw his wife this past summer at Church and honestly I was surprised she was still active after all that fiasco

Thank you.

I don't know anything about Gileadi. Was he reinstated with a new DC or was the original decision overturned?

If I had a council I would try to appeal and do anything I could to stay in the church. Even if it would fail, you still have to try if the church is important in your life.

It depends. If I considered the decision of the council just it is best to accept it and then work with your leaders to find your way back.

Nehor, This is interesting. There is definitely a requirement for humility during a repentence process so I wonder if the deck is stacked against the person who may want to appeal. Would leaders inherently view an appeal as prideful, or lacking the necessary humility required for repentence?

I doubt it. If you are an arrogant twit about the appeal I could see it being a problem but I doubt an appeal in general would go against you. If I was convinced the judgement was just I would not bother to appeal as I would want to get the repentance process started.

if you really wanted to stay in the church, you don't have to appeal to do. Keep coming to church every week, be humble, pray and in time ask to be rebaptised. I know two people who were excommunicated and have since been rebaptised and one person who was excommunicated, didn't want to change their behaviour and didn't want to be in the church anymore anyway. I understand wanting to appeal if you truly feel you have not done the alleged behaviour and you want to go to the temple and have the priesthood and maybe wanting a "clean" record so I'm not suggesting no one should appeal or it shows a lack of humility, just that excommunication per se doesn't mean you can't stay in church. You do get a break from callings.

I am aware of a few incidences which involved mental illness. One woman was excommunicated for adultery but a family member went to the stake president and she was reinstated and given counseling. I don't recall the reason for the other excommunication but in this instance, the fellow went to the stake president and his excommunication was overruled. I am not aware of any that were at the stake level that were reversed but that is simply because none such occurred while I was in such a calling that would make me aware.
