boblloyd91 Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 http://www.bpnews.net/43783/mormons-grappling-with-their-history I've noticed that several essays have been published by Southern Baptist sources saying that with the Church's essays, this is a good time to bring benighted Mormons to the "true gospel" of the Southern Baptists. Among things being said is that God never condoned polygamy, and that the LDS leaders are unable to keep members form leaving in a mass exodus. They referred concerned individuals to the works of the Tanners. Aside from being condescending, I'm not sure if members will be joining the SBC in droves due to polygamy essays being published....what do you guys think?

The number of times I've been personally assaulted by the Southern Baptists, If I were to change from Mormonism... it would be to anything else. Mormons may have horns, but the Southern Baptists have fangs. 7
HappyJackWagon Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I wonder what their source is for members leaving in droves?
stemelbow Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I wonder what their source is for members leaving in droves? more than likely, Marlin Jensen's "Maybe since Kirtland..." thing.
bluebell Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 (edited) I'm not surprised they are capitolizing on the opportunity to jump in and try to look like the good guy. I think their "God doesn't condone polygamy" stuff might be a tough sell considering God used polygamy to create His covenant people, and that many of His biggest (for lack of a better term) prophets of the bible were polygamists. Are these the same southern baptists that were founded primarily because the other baptists weren't pro-slavery? Something about people in glass houses and throwing stones comes to mind. 3
Scott Lloyd Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 more than likely, Marlin Jensen's "Maybe since Kirtland..." thing. That was quoted in the link, in fact. Looks like some sectarians are acting like sharks who have tasted blood. I would avoid the temptation to paint with a broad brush, however. I don't believe they are all like this. 1

Not to mention the directive to keep captured women during the conquest of Canaan as concubines
eddie Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Not to turn this into a Bible bash fest, but there is this. Every point made in that article could be magnified to fit the SBC.http://www.patheos.com/blogs/frenchrevolution/2012/07/10/six-reasons-why-mormons-are-beating-baptists-in-church-growth/

I'm not so sure that just because Old Testament prophets did something we should assume it would be a good idea for Joseph to have done the same. 1

We don't assume it just because Old Testament prophets did it. We assume it was a good idea for him to do it because God commanded him to do it. 8
bluebell Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I'm not so sure that just because Old Testament prophets did something we should assume it would be a good idea for Joseph to have done the same.Even without automatically assuming it, a person still has to log it into the evidence folder that suggests God sometimes allows the practice. 2
Ham Clam Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I have been going to a Southern Baptism church on Sundays (along with my YSA branch in the afternoons). I talked to the pastor there. He has LDS friends, and he felt no need to condemn me or force things on me. I am in a safe space to learn more about my boyfriend's religion and take the good from that space.I wish more Southern Baptists would react like him.
omni Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 In my experience, when LDS have a faith crisis their first reaction generally isn't too join another conservative/fundamentalist religion. 3

Hamba Tuhan Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I wonder what their source is for members leaving in droves? Possibly some of the same people who also claim that Church growth in areas with the internet has come to a complete halt?
Ham Clam Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I'm sure the internet is doing a number on Southern Baptists as well.My boyfriend and his two brothers are all young earth creationist. He said that if Gensis isn't literal then the bible must be lying therefore not true ... wonder where he got those ideas ...
BCSpace Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Among things being said is that God never condoned polygamy They never read 2 Samuel 12:7-8.

There is a huge amount of information against this, plus Ken Ham saying aliens are going to hell if they exist doesn't give one the impression that YEC's are known for deep thought. 1
halconero Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Biblical inerrancy, priesthood of all believers, and a conception of grace which at best nullifies good works and at worst vilifies them?Nope, no appeal to me. 2
mnn727 Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 He said that if Gensis isn't literal then the bible must be lying therefore not true ... wonder where he got those ideas ...Its a common Evangelical belief -- totally wrong but still common. They hang everything on the inerrancy of the Bible because that all they have.
