VideoGameJunkie Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time?
JLHPROF Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time? Yes and yes. These two options are not mutually exclusive. 1
VideoGameJunkie Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 I remember when I was in young men that a young woman said she was defying her parents by wearing thongs. I am so lucky as a guy I didn't have to worry about undergarments.
Duncan Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 some are and some aren't. I think we have all seen members go off the deep end and into all kinds of situations. I think some people can feel boxed in, trapped whatever and then once they turn 18 or come back from their missions they break out so to speak.
thesometimesaint Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I dress modestly for 2 essential reasons. One is for warmth, and two is to not scare the public. 1
AddamS Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Depends on the generation you're talking to. Good answer.
Walden Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time? This is coming from an agnostic/borderline atheist who used to be LDS, so I have no dog in the fight on this issue, but I've known both uptight Mormons and fun Mormons who know how to have a good time. I don't know that somewhat's faith is a good indication of their ability to have a good time. My Catholic mother-in-law is as uptight as they come, but my Catholic father-in-law is a "live and let live" type of person who is the life of the party. My LDS mom is a riot, but my LDS dad, not so much. I have tales of Young Men's trips that we took to Yellowstone Park as well as Mexico (when they used to allow youth to travel much more freely) that were some of the most enjoyable and fun trips that I ever went on....some of the best memories of my youth.
Buzzard Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Some of us would submit that the problem is less related to LDS being prudes (not many I have known were, anyway) and more related to a lot of people who could use a little more prudishness in their lives. There is a difference between knowing how to have a good time and unhinged debauchery. 4
The Nehor Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Unfortunately the lack of provocative clothing and having a good time are mutually incompatible. I know I am incapable of having a good time unless I am bare-chested and making fair maidens swoon. 2
MiserereNobis Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 “Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,There’s always laughter and good red wine.At least I’ve always found it so.Benedicamus Domino!” -- Hilaire Belloc 3
rlds_coc_lds Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Part of the problem with a question like this is that there are many definitions for what a "good time" is. I, for instance, have a good time at church, travelling, eating, reading, etc. none of which are necessarily hampered by being a "prude." 2

Calm Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 (edited) I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time? Why would anyone equate dressing immodestly and having a good time? How are they equivalent? PS: I think that came out more accusatory than I wanted it to. It is just something I've never understood. I am more comfortable and relaxed when I don't have to think about things like my skirt blowing up in the wind or bending over and exposing cleavage a bit too much, etc. Modestly dressing means I can relax and not have to worry about anyne seeing something that makes them unrelaxed. Kenngo1969 Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I don't consider wearing a thong as "having a good time" myself.Or defying parents for that matter.I don't think I'd look very good in a thong, myself. P.S.: I grew up in a family whose head had 43 years of military and paramilitary experience by the time he retired. If I attempted to defy one or both of my parents, he had no problem knocking me into next week!
Sleeper Cell Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I suppose it depends on whether or not the person who is calling you “uptight” and a “prude” is “immodest” and “immoral.” BTW, why is it acceptable to call someone a “prude,” and “judgmental” to call someone “immodest?” 2
VideoGameJunkie Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 It's a good thing then that Mormons don't get invited to parties, because of what goes on at parties.
ERayR Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Shucks no Mormons are not uptight and prude. Why I have been known to drink a whole liter of Dr.Pepper at a party. 2
Calm Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 It's a good thing then that Mormons don't get invited to parties, because of what goes on at parties.I have heard of some stakes putting on their own proms for the LDS kids and getting a number of nonmembers preferring that version to the school's. What is fun is personal taste.
VideoGameJunkie Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 My stake has a Mormon prom and it's a hit.

BlueDreams Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Why do they put on another prom? Well for one, why not? You have the dang dress, might as well use it more than once . when I was a teen the mormon prom had a number of good things going for it that helped. All laurels/priests were invited so there wasn't any real exclusion. We went in large groups, so there wasn't as much pairing going on. HS prom can be....well, a little rough around the edges and it was nice not to feel out of place. And they had a good warm feel to them where you were with people that you often know and enjoy as opposed to a large student body where most of them you may or may not know (my school was huge). Those were a few reasons I saw. As for uptight v. friend: yes, overall. Sometimes they're both in the same breath. With luv,BD
BCSpace Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time? Sure we can. And we can do it without dressing immodestly or compromising any of our other principles. Can you allow us at your parties without expecting us or forcing us to do so? Edited April 11, 2014 by BCSpace
why me Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I know mormon girls are told to dress modestly and all other Mormons seem to be uptight. Or can Mormons unwind at parties and know how to have a good time? What does it mean to be uptight? We need to remember that mormons are all over the world and are having parties and walking around the streets. I don't think that they are walking around with long dresses and hairnets. It is true that because there is no drinking one may not find people feeling good at a party, allowing the alcohol to unwind them. But they are laughing, having fun etc. I think that if more people would do it the mormon way, people would remember more what happened at the party and many people would not act on the stupid side while feeling a little tipsy.
