Most likely he has been around someone who's gay. But did he sit down and ask them what they feel about it. Has USU read the statistics of the suicides that take place. It's so telling. Sorry if I patronized, but it bothers me that he makes it sound like it is an impossibility, and didn't read the research that it can occur.

Rather than assume, it seems more efficient to ask for his experience...but then one couldn't just throw in those dismissive digs, could one?

Dude, it's a joke... You know - smiley face and all.

It was a context joke from earlier in the thread. I've already apologized that USU78 was offended by that.

Go read the exchange though. Still no admission that he completely misread the questions and underlying intentions of my questions.

Considering the previous exchange I thought my joke was quite funny. I also think USU78 can let me know if he doesn't. I'll take my guidance on how to engage him from him, not from someone else.

If he doesn't think its funny then I guess I have discovered a board that doesn't share my sense of humor; and I'll guess I'll apologize again.

Mods put a lot of limits on this subject (for good reason given the way some past threads have gone). I like your sense of humour, Ken's too and I really like my own but this is one topic I try to squelch it as much as possible due to a higher rate of misunderstanding and offence given so many have been carrying on the conversation for decades and in multiple arenas so we are all coming to it from a highly different context.

Possibly, but much depends upon perception. So when we backed Prohibition, and now when we fight SSM, it does give the perception that we are trying to dictate standards to non members. The success of such efforts is almost always unlikely, and rarely ends up looking good in the course of history. Perception is not something we can ignore at will. The public perception is that we are forcing our religion on others, and are devoting considerable resources to that effort. Once the amount of money devoted to adopting Prop 8 became public and the amount coming from Mormons estimated, the culture war was lost. Prior to Prop 8 , it was unlikely that SSM would be accepted in the short term, however, as soon as Americans learned that it was religious organizations funding the adoption of their beliefs as law, the jig was up.

A clear perspective. As time passes, even the most strong willed lds individuals will concede this point.

Open your eyes or heart. See for yourself, talk to one person who is gay, find the evidence that way then. Do some of the leg work.

I open my heart to whom and what way I choose.  I dismiss the following claims:

1.  That there is a systemic and significant shortage of jobs, housing, and borrowing opportunities for self-proclaimed homosexuals . . .

2.  That there is a demonstrated organic cause for homosexual behavior . . .

3.  That men who abandon their wives and families for other men are in any way brave . . .

4.  That those who succumb to homosexual urges are in any way brave . . .

5.  That those who self-proclaim as homosexual are in any way laudworthy on that account . . .

6.  That those who use the courts to impose requirements abhorrent to others are in any way laudworthy . . .

7.  That there is any statistically significant difference between "gay on gay" and "straight on gay" or "gay on straight" violence that needs addressing via legislation . . .

8.  That hate crime laws are not anything other than politically motivated favors extended as a quid pro quo for political favors given or promised . . .

9.  That it is not a horror beyond expression that children should be raised in same-sex households . . . and . . .

10.  That women are not the losers in the homosexual "rights" wars.

It is, in my humble opinion, a hate crime and the pinnacle of bigotry to accuse religionists of responsibility for the suicides by the mentally ill, including those whose mental illness includes same sex attraction syndrome.
