All elements of Mormonism interconnect beautifully, there are not really any gaps, mysteries, unexplainable truths, and everything references everything else. One eternal entire truth.

Mudcat Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 (edited) I think, at least in apologetic circles, a lot of commonly thought doctrine gets shuffled off in the "folk doctrine" section. I worked with the mentally retarded for a few years on a full time basis.. way back when. Any theist is bound to ask themselves "Why are they this way God?". One of the more compelling answers towards the topic was given to me by my in laws, who are LDS. I won't get wordy other than to say, they thought that in this war that went on in heaven, that those who seemed so incapable of serious earthly decision were actually the most valiant there. They were the battle scarred warriors of God and that this place was more of stepping stone, rather than a proving ground, to where they knew they were always going. But sometimes the best explanations for one thing, unexplain a lot of other things and I suppose that is why it's some sort of "folk" teaching rather than something official. Churches are the last bastion of community in my country.2) The church's doctrine of pre-existence; the divine origin & destiny of man. It's a powerful teaching.3) The richness of the church's foundational stories, its Book of Mormon, and its other early revelations through the prophet, Joseph Smith. In my opinion, the church is successful because it can tell compelling stories and weave complex narratives that include the critical elements of purpose and meaning. There is enough richness in the church's narratives that powerful parallels can be drawn and plausibility structures built up. It gives people a place of strength from which they can wage their daily battles in life. 1

God's first institution was marriage and his first commandment "to multiply and replenish the earth", which shows his priority, and reflects our own. Of all the names he has, the one that he prefers and the most defining is Father...so this (or these connected issues) is my favorite thing(s).

Hello VGJ...I've wondered about the world of animals, and our theology regarding them... I know they have spirits, but am unsure of their role beyond the veil. Can anyone provide a written source of our view on this?All I know is that... Bob...beautiful, 20 lb Bob... has been a wonderful companion to me... and how intelligent he is... how many words and phrases he understands. He is very loving, and sometimes when he wants to be held he'll jump up on the table where I'll be sitting and come over and place his paws on my shoulder so I'll take him and hold him. Then he just purrs like a buzz saw, and will lean into me, content to be held for aa long as I will.I have many favorite things about our theology in relation to us... but would like to know more about our understanding of the world of animals, particularly pets such as cats and dogs...I suppose I should start a separate thread about animals so as not to derail this thread... from the beach on a cold winter-like day... GGI went to the temple and prayed about it in the Celestial room asking for an answer and it was confirmed to me that I'll be with my cats in the next life. I suggest you do the same to find the comfort. It isn't heaven without my loved ones. 1

Or maybe my misunderstanding or maybe just an insight of true understanding. "What's your favorite thing about the LDS church?"Simple enough question but the responses - or lack thereof. Wow! In this question, I see how this board follows other boards and life in general. Humans don't always look for the simple/positive. 39 responses up until mine and several were multiple posters. (I didn't do a thorough count) We seem to be too busy with our daily lives to stop and admire the simple things and the things that should matter the most. (me included but I am learning with simple encouragements/threats from my wife Ha). It seems that people want to flock to the controversial headlines; and be participants. And numbers (responses to this thread) say that, taking just a second to stop and compliment a goodness - a positive, doesn't merit an effort. People are so quick to want to tear down each other's arguments that they rush right by the positives in life. I'm going to bow out of board discussions for awhile. Just so I can get back into my scriptures more, focus on positive things in life. I will seek out positive discussions about Christ with like-minded individuals. But I will state before I go: LDS church positive : family emphasis - what is definately needed in a world of crumbling family values. Methodist (mine) church positive : Hands on missionary work. Doing God's work without any return expectations.

While I have my issues with some of the doctrine and history I love the people; they are my family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. We have very different political beliefs (he's a borderline socialist, IMO), and we come from very different backgrounds, but we understand each other, and he accepts and welcomes me. I've met a lot of wonderful people in the church over the years, and he's just the latest. 1

If He were to do anything that would be at variance with the laws of eternal truth, He would cease to be God... 22 But there is a law given, and a punishment affixed, and a repentance granted; which repentance, mercy claimeth; otherwise, justice claimeth the creature and executeth the claw, and the law inflicteth the punishment; if not so, the works of justice would be destroyed, and God would cease to be God. 23 But God ceaseth not to be God, and mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead; and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into the presence of God; and thus they are restored into his presence, to be judged according to their works, according to the law and justice. (Alma 42) Oh..........crap. Is it too late to switch my vote to Lucifer? Yes, you have to obey the laws of righteousness but those are not confining. Some make it sound like it is rigid lockstep through eternity. Yuck! Might as well replace gods with automatons if that is the case. Luckily....false. There are decisions to be made and adventures to be had down that road and fun things to try using the powers of creation and omnipotence. Ahhhh....good times. 1
