Kathryn,

You might find this short video of interest.

One concept is how we interpret and visualize the religious account of such things as the Garden of Eden.  One "piece of the puzzle" is to change our visualization.

Starting at 10:30 we hear Nibley regarding ancient man ("Before Adam").

Genetics vs descendancy, the law of adoption.

"point of view" -- the sun rises and sets only from a specific point of view of the observer.  An astronaut does not see it that way.  The scriptures show things from a point of view of the observer as well, not seen by the scientist.

Others on this forum point out that the book of Genesis is based on the temple drama, rather than a scientific account.

Agreed.

No, I can't.  And, Katherine, can we assume that you are aware that evolutionists have many issues and questions which they are unable to address, but they are confident that those issues will eventually be resolved.

So, what exactly is your point?

I'm trying to understand your comment that you are equally comfortable with science as well as religion.  i'm not sure how literal of an approach you take to the scriptural Adam and Eve story and I was asking you to explain.  I am not a scriptural literalist and I accept human evolution and a very long history of humanity so I don't have a problem existing in both worlds.

The name Sherem you need to take into account too. If this was an outsider aka asian(many people on this board like to believe there were asians present), then why wasn't his name Ming or Gangus.

This is seriously the most ignorant statement I have ever heard from any poster on this board.

Yep, have to agree with you on that.

I am proposing a variation of the "shelf of disbelief" concept.  You might want to become familiar with the concept of the "chinese wall" as it would apply here.

I dont think I will put my trust in man and you to figure out the age of the human race. Science is an ememy to God. So Hinckley stated that he will leave science alone and leave it up tp them. Nonsense!

Since I am a scientist and a Latter-day Saint such comments are nonsensical at best.

But they sound good!  Kind of like the WC Bryant qoute, " I put greater trust in the Rock of Ages than the age of rocks."    Which is very comforting don't you think?.....lol

Nah.  I prefer straightforward answers but if you don't want to, that's fine too.  :)

On the contrary, I prefer such answers.  But I am a realist and if you prefer to ignore reality, that's ok with me.

You may want to stay away from quantum physics and stick with math or accounting.  :<)

I recommend that you stay away from quantum physics.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing.  I never ignore reality.  I was asking about your own personal paradigm.  I'm also not a physicist.  I'm an anthropologist.

OK, you have never had to tackle an apparent unsolvable paradox (as one may encounter in physics), but I guess anthropology is pretty safe.

We've seen dramatic evidence of where that type of thinking gets them.

Are you a physicist?  BTW, I have NO idea what you are talking about.  I simply asked you to explain how you view Adam and the human race.  I think we are just talking past each other.

I'm a working bioarchaeologist and I saw the article in Nature Magazine on the department blog today.  Something to keep in mind: These remains are 24 thousand years old. There is a second bone from the same site that is 17,000 years old that yielded similar genetic information.  They cannot possibly have anything directly to do with the Book of Mormon--except possibly to describe the ancestry of the people already there when the first BOM characters arrived in the New World.  To me, the most exciting part of this find is the knowledge that humans were able to actually inhabit this ferociously cold northern area right in the middle of the last glacial maximum!

I have read several times that Arab (Muslim or NO) regularly traded in North America, though I have not been told the era. It could have been around the time of the BOM activity. I can not provide references for this because at the time I was so enamored with being Muslim, I just believed what I was told. I am told that there are Arabic words in Native Indian language and Arabic letters in a few places in the middle reaches of the Mississippi River.
