Can anyone define "success" in a manner which is consistent both with Mormon standards and a competitive based economic system?

Becoming exalted and ruling all of creation in supernal joy. Then make sure that lots of other people are damned so they do not hog all the scarce resources.

I think you are better off just trying to alienate people from the Church who are more accountable. Downside: Doing so sends you to hell. Hmmm.... may need a new strategy.

The real question is whether there is any type of success that is inconsistent with Mormon standards. Why don't you give that a shot?

I think that this is a problem. The American LDS do seem to be 'success' oriented within the definitions of a competitive economic system: acquiring the good life through comfortable living and possessions. But I must also say that since the lds church has expanded in population this is not always the case. When we take a step outside the USA, we see the lds with a different value structure from the American norm. However, I have never read an article in a church magazine that says that success is through materialism. Just the opposite.

We all need to consider just how the socio-economic system that we live under influences who and what we are.

Having enough for our needs, and enough to bless the lives of those who, for whatever reason, have not been so successful/lucky.

Being self reliant both temporally and spiritually.

Success is the condition where one has advanced by virtue of competing with himself in some aspect of economic endeavor while voluntarily sharing his advancements and achievements with others so that all might do the same and expand these and other endeavors in quantity, quality and type.

Or, how our attitude with the Light of Christ influences our approach to and ue of the socio-economic system that we live under.

Most definitely.

Clearly we need someone smarter than us to handle our affairs for us. You can't just have people running around and being self reliant. No telling what kind of trouble that might make.

They might actually make more money than someone else! Horrible!!

Except of course movie stars. They deserve all the money they make because they calm us down and entertain us - sports figures also. That's what we need- more entertainment.

Can't have people thinking for themselves- that's dangerous.

Sphia Loren calms you down?

Because they serve the same function as gladiators did for the Roman Empire, to keep the masses distracted so they didn't notice their poverty.

Bread and circuses.

Roman leaders generally understood that if you could keep the poor fed and entertained they'll give you all the power you need to be as corrupt as you want.

Yep, still basically works. Except now perhaps you can substitute key sex related issues for bread.

Let me put it this way.

She helps me forget my problems. ;)

That's because Hollywood is controlled by nasty greedy Republicans.
