Wow...you just truly dated yourself.....

Oh--that was a typo. I meant Mila Kunis.

...Florence Lawrence, anyone?

Yep, still basically works. Except now perhaps you can substitute key sex related issues for bread.

Rights and Circuses?

Do you not realize that the context here is economics or are you just being silly?

Killing people is a time honored way of creating wealth as it frees up resources to be used by others.

I wish this was one of your jokes.

So true.

The plague was a huge economic boon for the Middle Ages.

Death, however it's brought, eventually tends to be a financial blessing for those left behind.

The Nehor being silly?

Simply not possible. If he made a joke he would cease to be The Nehor.

And this is a "competitive based economic system" how? Nevermind I can see you're just joshing.

Survivors get the money. What could be more competitive?

Depressing but the plague did pretty much kickstart the end of feudalism as a shortage of workers meant workers could demand more for their labor and brought about capitalism.

They called me a mad scientist for trying to create a disease to kill off a third of the earth and start the zombie apocalypse. I am actually an economist working towards the quickest way to end the recession. :)

Actually wars used to be used, and to a certain extent, still are used as useful diversions. The Mexican American war was seen as a way of defusing the SC Secessionist movement, and later as the Civil War became more imminent, several other wars were suggested as diversions. But war is only a competitive economic system on an international scale. This topic was targeted more at success at a domestic level.

No, it also works on the domestic level too. If I were to kill my parents and not get caught I would be a millionaire within weeks. Fortunately I love my parents. Others are in a similar situation and are not so fortunate. Then there are mob-type killings to free up wealth.

Cain had this figured out a long time ago. Who else would get the flocks?

Adam.

Nah, the old man was already over a hundred years old at the time. How much longer could he live before Cain would get it all?

Long enough to spawn the rest of the human race -- remember Seth, etc. plus obviously a bunch of sisters. One could, however, consider unregulated free market capitalism a form of warfare where you seek to obtain the maximum amount of security in the form of material wealth for you and a relatively small group of allies. Success then would be measured in terms of the amount of wealth accumulated and the ability to protect that wealth in the form of police, firemen, and military under your control.

What are you talking about? What private citizens control police, firemen, or the military?

Throughout history.....lots of people.

Clearly we need someone smarter than us to handle our affairs for us. You can't just have people running around and being self reliant. No telling what kind of trouble that might make.

That's what employers are for. Oh, wait, the government started it by imposing taxes and requiring that we use money to pay them. And then employers came along to help us acquire some money. God bless employers. No telling what we'd be doing if we didn't have to do a "job" that an employer hires us to do.

They might actually make more money than someone else! Horrible!!

Wait! I thought employers were supposed to make more money, so they could afford to pay all of their workers who do what they want them to do. Am I missing something?

Except of course movie stars. They deserve all the money they make because they calm us down and entertain us - sports figures also. That's what we need- more entertainment.

Can't have people thinking for themselves- that's dangerous.

Well, yeah, sure. Somebody needs to hire and pay the entertainers and they want as much of our money as they can get.

These have two primary functions, the protection of life and property. The size of the U.S. military is way beyond the need for defense of American lives in America, so its primary function is to protect overseas American assets and access to petroleum. The accumulation of wealth is neither practical, nor possible without a substantial investment in police, firemen and military. Where it becomes impractical to protect everyone, the wealthy move to gated enclaves and utilize private security and in some cases private fire services. As conditions deteriorate (as demonstrated in other countries) they attempt to control the military. So ultimately, success measured in terms of this type of system requires trust in and control of police, fire, and military -- as to the latter, only technology and actual personnell are important, retired veterans are expendable. Which is why "Be All That You Can Be" seems to have generated a disparate number of homeless vets.

I know you would like this board to be your personal forum for your political rantings, but let's try to have a discussion, which is what this board is supposed to be about. Apparently you think capitalism is an immoral system that is not in harmony with the spirit of the gospel. You've described it as a form of warfare. So please respond to this question: If somebody starts a small business, which is capitalism at its most fundamental level, who is that small business owner making war upon?

I know this is not aimed at me but I argue that it is an amoral system not an immoral system.
