Popular Post smac97
Last September we discussed a news item about a security cam recording two missionaries approaching a lesbian couple's house, taking a look at the doormat which read "Gayest Place in Town," and the Elders audibly saying "nope" and swiftly walking away from the property. In that thread, and in response to my inquiry, "Do you think the missionaries should have knocked on the door?", Hamba commented: Quote Yes. When I was a zone leader, I had the opportunity to interview a c. 30-year-old professional for baptism. He had 'come out' at university and had lived a pretty stereotypical gay life for the next ten years or so. One day the missionaries knocked on his door and left him with a copy of the Book of Mormon. They also promised him that they would return and discuss it with him, but they never returned. He believed they had been put off by his obvious 'gayness' (whether from fear, out of respect, out of a sense of futility, etc.), and I suspect he was right. This was pre-Google, so despite having read the book, this man didn't know what else to do but wait. Eventually, future missionaries found his name and address in the area book and dropped in on him. He was thrilled. As he described it to me in his interview, as he'd read the Book of Mormon, it was as though scales had fallen from his eyes, and for the first time in his life, he was able to step outside of the dominant discourses that he had always and only known and critically 'read' certain constructs, seeing through their claims to temporal and spatial universality. This included not just his own sexual identity but also the concept of sexual identity in general. From that point forward, he had chosen to live chastely whilst waiting to reconnect with the missionaries. After the interview, I discussed the matter with the mission president, who took the opportunity to do a follow-up interview with this man mostly just to warn him of the target he was about to place on himself. The one thing the queer community cannot tolerate, my mission president had said, is a 'defector'. In my naivety, I thought the MP was being ridiculous/hysterical, but it turned out to be an apt warning. This man went ahead with the decision to be baptised and, when I left my mission, was still standing strong despite the almost daily harassment he was receiving from his former friends, including things like threatening phone calls in the middle of the night. If we truly believe in agency, we should never preempt another person's choice based on our own biases or presumptions. In furtherance of the bolded item above, let us now turn our attention to a fellow named Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, a/k/a "NBA YoungBoy." From his Wikipedia entry: Quote Kentrell DeSean Gaulden (born October 20, 1999), known professionally as YoungBoy Never Broke Again[1][2] (also known as NBA YoungBoy or simply YoungBoy), is an American rapper. Between 2015 and 2017, he released eight independent mixtapes and steadily garnered a cult following through his work. In late 2017, Gaulden was signed to Atlantic Records. In January 2018, he released the single "Outside Today", which peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[3] The song became the lead single for his debut studio album Until Death Call My Name (2018) which peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard 200. ... Despite his success, Gaulden's career has been marked by a long history of legal issues that began in 2016, and has released multiple projects during his incarcerations.[10] ... Despite his success as a musical artist, Gaulden had been involved in numerous criminal run-ins and a civil lawsuit. 2014: Robbery charge and juvenile detention[edit] In late 2014, Gaulden was arrested for robbery and sent to a detention center in Tallulah, Louisiana. He was released after serving 6 months.[65][66][67] 2016-17: Attempted murder[edit] On November 28, 2016, U.S. Marshals arrested Gaulden before a concert in Austin, Texas, accusing him of jumping out of a vehicle and opening fire on a group of people on a South Baton Rouge street. Gaulden was charged with two counts of attempted murder.[68][69] Gaulden was in jail until May 2017 for attempted first degree murder.[70] Speaking on his incarceration, he said "I don't think they really target, but if you got a name, they know who you is, you do something, they gonna come get you, and whoever you're with and whatever they do, you're accountable for it just because you got the biggest name. That's how that **** go."[71] Facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault with a firearm. On August 22, 2017, he was sentenced to a suspended ten-year prison term and three years of active probation.[69] 2018: Assault, weapons and kidnapping[edit] Gaulden was arrested before a concert at The Moon nightclub in Tallahassee on February 25, 2018. Gaulden had a warrant in the state of Georgia for allegedly committing assault, weapons violations and kidnapping.[72] Hotel surveillance footage leaked shortly following his arrest showing Gaulden assaulting his former girlfriend.[73] On March 15, 2018, he was released from jail on $75,000 bail.[74] 2019: Assault and battery lawsuit[edit] On March 12, 2019, it was reported that Gaulden and Never Broke Again artist Tyquian "Quando Rondo" Bowman were filed suit by a man claiming to be the rappers' bodyguard, tour manager and/or tour DJ for assault, battery and emotional distress. The lawsuit claims that on December 21, 2018, during a concert in Florence, South Carolina, the two performers were annoyed by a crazed fan resulting in an argument. The claimant states that he, Gaulden, Bowman and members of their entourage were escorted backstage by management, venue owners and concert organizers where he claims to have been assaulted by the two aforementioned. The person, who claimed was confronted by the two defendants, commented that Bowman (although unprovoked) instigated the incident by attempting to force him back onstage to break up the fan craze to secure his team, but after he refused, Bowman and Gaulden immediately assaulted him as he tried to explain to both parties of his deeds. It resulted in the victim sustaining a "cracked tooth, bloody face and injuries to his reputation". Gaulden's attorney stated that he had no prior knowledge of the incident, but would look into the outcome of the lawsuit.[75][76][77][78][79][80] 2019: Miami shooting, probation violation and house arrest[edit] While Gaulden was on probation, on May 12, 2019, he was involved in a shooting in Miami in which he returned fire after a shooter in a black Cadillac Escalade opened fire, injuring Gaulden's girlfriend and killing a bystander.[81] Though Gaulden's charges for the shooting itself were dismissed, he was found to be in the company of Ben Fields and Trulondrick "Boomer" Norman, which violated a special condition of his probation; for this violation, the judge ordered him to spend 90 days in jail, banned him from performing for the next 14 months, and sentenced him to house arrest with electronic monitoring for the remainder of his probation.[82] 2019-20: Probation termination and renewal[edit] On December 13, 2019, the judge officially terminated Gaulden's probation for two counts of attempted murder.[83] However, he was sentenced to a year of probation five days later after he pleaded guilty to simple assault in the case involving his ex-girlfriend.[84] 2020: Baton Rouge arrest for firearm and drug offenses[edit] On September 28, 2020, Gaulden was among sixteen people arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on various charges, including distribution and manufacturing of drugs and possession of stolen firearms. His lawyer denied any guilt, stating "There was no indication that he had any guns or drugs on him at the time of the arrest".[85] As news of his arrest surfaced, Gaulden deleted all of his social media, including his Instagram and Twitter accounts.[86] 2021-22: Federal firearm charge[edit] On March 22, 2021, Gaulden was arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles executing a federal warrant stemming from his September 2020 arrest in Baton Rouge. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle with Gaulden in it to serve the warrant when Gaulden took off on foot. After a search that involved using a K9, Gaulden was found and booked on federal firearms charges.[87][88] On October 26, 2021, he was released from jail on a $1.5 million bail.[89] On July 15, 2022, Gaulden was found not guilty on his federal firearms charges from California, due to a lack of evidence linking him to intentionally possessing the weapons found.[90][91] ... Personal life[edit] At 23 years old, Gaulden is the father of ten children with eight different women.[93][94][95][96][97] Two of his sons, Kayden and Kacey, appeared in the video for his single, "Kacey Talk".[35] In a 2017 profile for The Fader, Gaulden named Kamron as one of his sons. Kamron was born in July 2016 to Starr Thigpen just weeks after Kayden.[98] However, a DNA test later confirmed that he was not the biological father.[99] On January 7, 2023, Gaulden married his long-time girlfriend and the mother of two of his children, Jazlyn Mychelle Hayes.[100][101][102] So he's living the wild 'n crazy lifestyle of a successful rapper. Nevertheless, I think Hamba was right about not preempting another person's choice, or opportunity to choose. See here: Quote NBA YoungBoy has revealed he plans to become a Mormon, crediting the Christian theology with helping pull him out of a dark place. In a sprawling interview with Billboard, the Baton Rouge rapper said his support of Mormonism began after being visited by missionaries while on house arrest in Utah. YoungBoy said he instinctively turned them away the first time they appeared on his doorstep, before having second thoughts and welcoming them into his home. “I wanted help very badly. I needed a friend. And it hit me,” he admitted. “It was just cool to see someone with a different mindset that had nothing to do with business or money — just these wonderful souls.” The missionaries then began visiting the rapper’s home every day, where they would engage in talks with him about The Book of Mormon and sought to “make sure” YoungBoy’s “heart was in the right space” for his official baptism into the church. He said he plans to become baptized into The Church of Latter-Day Saints after his house arrest is over. ... Elsewhere in the interview, NBA YoungBoy said his newfound interest in Mormonism has partially inspired him to rap less violent lyrics on some of his new music. “What if they don’t like me now?” he said, wondering about his fans’ thoughts on his newfound approach. “I’m not changing. I will not be provoked, I will not be broken, and I’m not going back to who I used to be. Accept it or not — I ain’t going back.” ... Aside from converting to Mormonism, YoungBoy is also planning a big move for his wife and children once his ankle monitor is removed. He recently said he plans to move his family to Europe, with plans to “stack” some serious cash in the meantime to make it happen. And here: Quote While the expansive piece by Meaghan Garvey for Billboard is best experienced in full, a number of highlights have started making the rounds among fans on social media, including a particularly vulnerable moment in which YB opens up about the positive influence the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have had on his life as of late (YB is currently residing in the Salt Lake City area of Utah). ... Reflecting more on his music, namely what he perceives as its potential impact on listeners, YB expressed a change in how he looks at his work now versus how he viewed it when he was younger. Specifically, when discussing “the s%^t I put in these people’s ears,” the artist touched on a sense of responsibility he now feels and his desire “to clean whatever I can clean” in the years ahead. “I think about how many lives I actually am responsible for when it comes to my music,” YB said before diving into several hypothetical scenarios, including asking “How many people have put this s%^t in their ears and actually went and hurt someone?” Deeper into his candor on this topic, which also saw him touching on having been “brought up around a lot of f%^$#d-up s%^t,” YB shared an apology. “I was wrong,” he said. “And I’m sorry.” To experience this must-read piece in in its entirety, head to Billboard for the full read. From the Billboard article: Quote Perhaps you’re wondering how a Baton Rouge rapper on house arrest finds himself deep in the heart of Mormon country. Those listening closely may have noticed YoungBoy name-dropping Utah’s capital from the beginning: “Take a trip to Salt Lake City, cross the mountain, ’cause that’s called living,” he chirped on “Kickin Sh-t” seven years ago. He first came here as a boy, he explains, as part of a youth outreach group initiative, and became very close with one of its leaders, a Utah native he declines to name, though he mentions she was married at the time to a professional baseball player. Today, he refers to the woman as his mom. “She’s a wonderful person. She’s just there when I need her,” he says softly. “She christened me, if I’m not mistaken, and then she brought me back here to meet her family. When I got here, it was always my goal: I’m going to move here. I’m going to have a home here. This is where my family is going to be.” Courtroom testimony from his 2021 hearing shows his attorneys reasoning that a permanent move to Utah would keep their client away from trouble; after some initial skepticism, the judge agreed. This next part is, for me, the kicker: Quote The past few months of YoungBoy songs are full of curious Utah-isms, like the Book of Mormon passage that opens his video for “Hi Haters” — “Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.” The lyrics to the song drop a "Go%#@mn," an f-bomb and a few other profanities, and yet the music video which begins by . . . quoting Alma the Younger in Alma 36:18: Wow. Quote — or a recent line mentioning missionaries visiting his home. “I’m surprised they didn’t come in the process of this [interview],” he says when I ask about the latter reference. The first time the Mormon missionaries appeared on his doorstep, weeks ago, YoungBoy instinctively sent them away. Then he had second thoughts: “I wanted help very badly. I needed a friend. And it hit me.” When they returned, he invited them in, explaining the things about himself he was desperate to change. “It was just cool to see someone with a different mindset that had nothing to do with business or money — just these wonderful souls,” he recounts. He has come to look forward to their daily visits, during which they discuss the Book of Mormon and “make sure my heart is in the right space” for his official baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-day Saints, a rite that forgives past sins through repentance, according to Mormon theology. He’s saving the ceremony for after his ankle monitor is removed. “Even when my negative thoughts come back, when I do want to tell them, ‘Not today,’ I just don’t let nothing stop it,” he says. ... As if some private dam has broken, YoungBoy’s words now spill out urgently. “I’m at a point now in my life where I just know hurting people is not the way, and I feel very manipulated, even at this moment,” he says, his brown eyes flashing. “I was set on being the greatest at what I did and what I spoke about. Man, I was flooded with millions of dollars from the time I was 16 all the way to this point, and I woke up one morning like, ‘D^&n. They got me. They made me do their dirty work.’ Man, look at the sh-t I put in these people’s ears.” By “they,” he’s alluding to the rappers he once looked up to as examples of how to live and those who bankroll them. His voice wavers, then steadies. “I think about how many lives I actually am responsible for when it comes to my music. How many girls I got feeling like if you don’t go about a situation that your boyfriend’s bringing on you in his way, you’re wrong? How many people have put this sh-t in their ears and actually went and hurt someone? Or how many kids felt like they needed to tote a gun and walked out the house and toted it the wrong way? Now he’s fixing to sit there and do years of his life that he can’t get back.” A shiver streaks through him again, rattling his knees. “I was brought up around a lot of f–ked-up sh-t — that’s what I knew, and that’s what I gave back to the world,” YoungBoy continues, spitting out his words like they’re sour. “I was like, ‘F–k the world before they f–k you.’ I was a child, you know? And now I know better, so it ain’t no excuse at all for how I carry on today.” His gaze doesn’t flinch. “It took lots of time to make my music strong enough to get it to where I could captivate you. I promise to clean whatever I can clean, but it’s going to take time, just like it took time for me to get it to that point.” He takes a sharp breath, then whispers: “I was wrong. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” "I’m at a point now in my life where I just know hurting people is not the way." "I think about how many lives I actually am responsible for when it comes to my music." "How many girls I got feeling like if you don’t go about a situation that your boyfriend’s bringing on you in his way, you’re wrong?" "How many people have put this sh-t in their ears and actually went and hurt someone?" "Or how many kids felt like they needed to tote a gun and walked out the house and toted it the wrong way? Now he’s fixing to sit there and do years of his life that he can’t get back." “I was like, ‘F–k the world before they f–k you.’ I was a child, you know? And now I know better, so it ain’t no excuse at all for how I carry on today.” “It took lots of time to make my music strong enough to get it to where I could captivate you. I promise to clean whatever I can clean, but it’s going to take time." “I was wrong. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” No wonder Alma's prayer resonates with him. I surely hope soon-to-be "Brother Gaulden" can continue to cross the distance from where he has been and where, it seems, the Lord wants him to be. Hamba was right: "If we truly believe in agency, we should never preempt another person's choice based on our own biases or presumptions." Thanks, -Smac 14 Link to comment

The Nehor
Being a lesbian is the moral equivalent of being a chronic criminal who espouses violence towards women and humanity in general? I am sure lesbians are flattered by this comparison. No matter how many times it is pointed out that posters here keep doing this kind of comparison they just can't stop. It is like an addiction or something. 4 Link to comment
Dario_M
Woow really? The missionaries walked away because they didn't wanna talk to a lesbisn couple? That is so wrong. I don't get why gay people get so bashed by everyone. It's kinda sad to read stories like this. A lot of homofobia. I find that this needs to stop. For me being also gay i find it really offensive. This behavoir needs to stop. In the church, outside of the church. Just everywhere. We are living in anno 2023. One should think that we are wiser now. There are lots of people who OBVIOUSLY wouldn’t be interested in the gospel (a Catholic priest, an Orthodox rabbi, a published atheist, a wine tasting expert, etc) but smac goes for the criminal comparison. Many thanks for sharing this story. When I was an undergraduate student in America, my Latter-day Saint housemates and I one year identified two individuals who were so screwed up that they would be the last people on the planet to ever join the Church. One of them was a journalism student from Texas who regularly used his presence in the student newspaper to scream about the evils of Christianity and -- worst of all, in his mind! -- Latter-day Saints. The other was a woman who had some kind of fatal attraction to my Cherokee housemate, to the point of committing acts that could easily have been classed as sexual assault and stalking. Before the year was out, both of them had become members. It was an important lesson. For many years now, I have said that, if the Lord is willing to forgive my depravity, then everyone has hope. I had an opportunity back in December to repeat that message. As EQ president, I felt impressed to reach out to a young man who hasn't been to church since he was 12. To my surprise, he responded, and we've had a few exchanges since. In one of the first ones, he asked me if I was going to invite him back to church My reply: 'Only if you want me to'. He then wrote that he doubted God would want him back after all the sins and crimes that he has committed. I assured him that, on a very personal level, I know that He does because He has always wanted me back. After all, we are all in the same boat when it comes to sin and redemption. I like James's message on this point: 'For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill'. The divisions between eternal kingdoms are not based on any kind of 'hierarchy' of the sins we commit. All sin separates us from God. Instead, what are our motivations for repenting? A man who has to experience the torment of Spirit Prison's temporary hell before he is willing to accept the Saviour's offer of salvation will find himself in the Telestial Kingdom whether the sin he refused to give up was gossiping or murder. Lastly, any suggestion that this or that person lacks the capacity to fully repent and follow Christ is the doctrine of devils. 6 Link to comment

That the only thing the rapper and the lesbian couple had in common, namely, a perception by Latter-day Saints that some folks may not appear likely to be interested in the missionary message, and that we need to get past making such presumptions. https://www.sportskeeda.com/pop-culture/news-what-mormonism-rapper-nba-youngboy-expresses-regret-violent-lyrics https://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00200001.html https://hip-hopvibe.com/news/nba-youngboy-is-planning-to-convert-to-mormonism-and-regrets-promoting-violence-in-his-songs-video/ https://www.the-sun.com/entertainment/7286770/what-religion-nba-youngboy-mormon/ https://variety.com/2023/music/news/young-boy-never-broke-again-regrets-lyrics-mormon-1235510067/ https://www.xxlmag.com/nba-youngboy-mormon/ https://allhiphop.com/news/nba-youngboy-wants-to-become-a-mormon/ https://www.tmz.com/2023/02/01/nba-youngboy-mormonism-billboard-married-music-streaming/ https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/627751-youngboy-never-broke-again-considering-mormon-baptism https://www.musictimes.com/articles/89978/20230201/nba-youngboy-turns-religion-during-house-arrest-wanted-help-very.htm https://thejasminebrand.com/2023/02/01/nba-youngboy-reveals-plan-to-become-a-mormon-i-wanted-help-very-badly/ https://www.rap-up.com/2023/02/01/nba-youngboy-becoming-mormon/ https://www.hot97.com/hot-news/youngboy-never-broke-again-reveals-hes-considering-mormonism Thanks, -Smac 1 Link to comment

Dario_M
Yeah yeah... being gay or lesbian is not easy like you guys can see so clearly in this topic. We receive a lot of judgements, hate, homofoobie, and sometimes even racisme. People treat you diffirend. And unfortunatly in the church they expect from you that you mary a woman or otherwise have no relationship or sex at all. This is a problem that you find everywhere. When i whas a teenager i lived in a small city in the Netherlands. Alkmaar (not that the name of that city really matters anyway because nobody knows it) But anyway.... i lived there as a teenager and offcourse went to high school in the same hometown. I whas getting bullied so badly at that school. It never had told anyone that i whas gay but they just knew it. They just saw it on me. The way how i looked, how i talked, how i walked, etc. Those where soms horible 4 years i have spend on that school. They have said horible things to me. They have done prity nasty things to me as well. A lot of threats also, a girl there on that school once told me and other classmates that she whas going to stab me. 🔪 With a knife. This all happends in the Netherlands guys. The Netherlands have such a good reputation about gay people and lesbian people. Everyone seems to think that. Well....think again. The Netherlands is not so gay friendly as people seems to think. If 2 males will walk hand in hand there on the street they will not be save. I know this. I have experienced it myself. On my highschool mainly. Every day. I always deny that i whas gay though. And good that i did. But it didn't helpt at all though. They where comming after me. Every day. And they really seem to felt pleasure in doing what they where doing. I have never understood why such a large group of people can hate gay people so much. Like on my school. And i still don't understand it. Edited February 2, 2023 by Dario_M 1 Link to comment

And you will find a wonderful family in the LGBT community who will love you for who you are and not who they want you to be. I think you were very brave to be out so young.
