But Adam replied, "My body, my choice.  I'm keeping the rib", and at that instant the human race ceased to exist.

Why? He could just hook up with Lillith again.

Or hook up with that Steve guy I keep hearing about. I mean the ideal has to be bisexuality. After all the Bible says “Adam and Eve not Adam or Eve”

Is this the road we are going down as a nation?

“The Village’s youngest and first openly gay elected official," Graham wrote in his resignation letter.

“In the statement, Graham said he's been followed home from meetings, threatened while walking his dog, harassed at Starbucks and had his tires slashed.

"Unfortunately, these malicious, bad-faith attacks are escalating and I no longer feel safe to serve in my capacity as mayor," Graham wrote. "It’s with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation effective immediately."

This is the road we have always been on. This isn’t unAmerican. It is the default expression of America’s homophobia. We made some progress but the backlash is going to be more hateful and spiteful than ever. The rhetoric is already mollifying any sense of guilt that should come from harassing or attacking a fellow human. The rationale is already being put in place that there are “groomers” everywhere who must be destroyed at any cost.

It is not isolated there either. Hate crimes are increasing along religious and racial lines too, particularly against Jewish people. Welcome to America, the land that was specifically founded to NOT be based on shared blood and ties to the land has decided that we want to be like other nations. Hopefully they will at least shut up about American Exceptionalism (they won’t).

This is tremendously regrettable. Harassment of this variety is unacceptable.

The video posted in the article said his resignation was fallout from a feud with the neighboring Nichols Hills Police Department. Does anybody have any idea what the heck that's about? It would be especially grievous if sworn officers were responsible for this.

Think this would fit better:

“It would be especially typically American if sworn officers were responsible for this.”

Police officers harassing political leaders over political disputes or something embarrassing is sadly not that rare. And what do you do when it happens? Call the police and report it?

Always be punching groomers! Always be punching Nazis!

Two sides of the exact same coin, and nothing can improve until all sides accept that.

I agree with both as long as the groomer term is applied to people who actually groom children to later have sex with them and not the weird definition where seeing a guy in a dress supposedly turns kids gay.

Groomers need a good punching.

Nope. I am not that pedantic. I call them Nazis when they espouse Nazi ideals and support fascist causes. I call people groomers when they groom children with the intent of raping them. You know, the generally used definitions.

Always be punching Nazis and pedophiles.

There isn't a Starbucks located in The Village. Maybe if he had supported his local Dunkin' all of this could have been avoided. ;)

I'm reasonably confident that every crime the former mayor actually reports to The Village Police Department (which until very recently he controlled) will be investigated.

I'm equally confident that you won't agree in some way.

Nothing was allegedly reported according to The Village police, so either he didn’t report it, the police didn’t understand it to be a report, or the police ignored his reports or perhaps the incidents happened outside The Village jurisdiction…which if with another police department*** would make the most sense if we assume both the exmayor and The Village police are telling the truth.

There has been significant interest from citizens and the media regarding the recent resignation of former Mayor Adam Graham. Many have wondered if our police department had received any reports of harassment, threats or property damage and if so, what had been done about it. Upon hearing of Mr. Graham’s resignation and allegations of criminal activity directed towards him, our Chief immediately directed an inquiry into whether we had received any calls for service or taken any reports in this matter. Our department received no reports of any kind from Mr. Graham or anyone else. If there would have been, we would have immediately, thoroughly and professionally investigated them as we would for anyone reporting this activity in The Village. As a fully accredited law enforcement agency we take our responsibilities seriously and strive every day to fulfill our mission of working with our community to provide professional law enforcement services. We love this City and its citizens and will continue to respond to all calls for service, in addition to offering community policing programs like TRIAD for Seniors, House Checks, Extra-Patrols, Safety Talks, Bicycle Patrol and our upcoming Citizens Police Academy

However, I assume he lives in The Village and following home and likely walking the dog would likely be in The Village (though perhaps he drives the dog to where he walks him like I used to when we walked along the river).  The exmayor may have just seen those as not likely to accomplish much reporting them to police though.  Still if he didn’t report them, no one should complain the police in his town did nothing to protect him.

Maybe there is CCTV for Starbuck’s incident (which sounds like in another town).

According to the Friday's report, Nichols Hills police claim a cop pulled over a car for going 43 in a 25 near the northern end of the town's legendary speed trap on Penn Ave., just blocks from where the thoroughfare transitions from the regal roads of Nichols Hills to the rough and tumble streets of The Village.

While dealing with the driver of that car, the police reported that another motorist pulled up, declared himself mayor of The Village, and then yelled at them through an open window, complaining that they "can't stop people in The Village!"

The Nichols Hills Police Department apparently has body cam footage of the incident and shared it with the breaking news division of The OKC Friday. We have yet to see it, but did acquire the following screenshot via The Ogle Mole Network:

https://okcfriday.com/village-mayor-grahams-response-no-response-p17233-92.htm

Quote
The incident was recorded on police body camera and is detailed in a May 28 email to Nichols Hills Police Chief Steve Cox.
Nichols Hills police officer Brandon Edwards reported that during the stop he and another officer were speaking with the traffic violator when a vehicle pulled alongside and "began yelling at us through his open windows.”
Officers reported the man identified himself as the mayor of The Village, and that later after reviewing The Village website determined the driver was, in fact, Mayor Adam Graham.
"The man was telling me that were in the wrong city and ‘this is The Village, not Nichols Hills’ and that we can’t stop people in The Village.”
The email report says, "His presence directly agitated an already uncooperative driver during the stop and put our safety at risk when it didn’t need to be.”
Police and Fire Departments in both Nichols Hills and The Village have had mutual aid agreements with each other for over 50 years.
Fireworks erupted during a packed June 20 Village City Council meeting as concerned citizens shouted questions and comments toward Graham. He refused to answer questions in public, but offered to meet one-on-one in private meetings prompting former Village councilman and Mayor David Bennett to ask, "What the hell were you thinking?”

Graham engaged in a verbal altercation with Nichols Hills police officers during a May 28 routine traffic stop after Nichols Hills police pulled over a speeding vehicle near the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave and Carlisle Rd. The intersection is three blocks outside the Nichols Hills city limits and inside The Village city limits….Police and Fire Departments in both Nichols Hills and The Village have had mutual aid agreements with each other for over 50 years.

As far as I can tell Graham has refused to respond to questions either about the first incident between him and the Nichols Hills Police (and if that was the trigger, doesn’t sound like it is a hate crime as he has been on the city council and vice mayor before being mayor for a total of 5 years without reporting harassment apparently) or the later alleged harassment incidents.  The only verbal assault that was recorded was him, though from what was reported it hardly sounds like a verbal assault and more just telling them they were outside their jurisdiction…which appears to be true, but the two towns apparently have a long running agreement allowing the emergency services to operate in each other’s towns.  It sounds like the council meeting where he was asked to respond and did not was well attended and heated, so it is possible someone was ticked off about his no response and started harassing him.  Claiming it is police seems a stretch.  The Nichols Hills Police Dept said last month or in June they were dropping the case.

And there's the rub.

Some more context from this news article as well (some of which I now see you've also added):

Quote

Police and fire departments in both Nichols Hills and The Village have had mutual aid agreements with each other for over 50 years ...

[Councilman Symes said:] "We had conversations about his incident with the Nichols Hills Police. He shared that the Nichols Hills police were rude to him.

"You do know about our statu[t]e to work together,” he said he asked Graham. "I love it when Nichols Hills and Oklahoma City police officers patrol in our area. We work together, especially when our departments are short staffed" ...

Graham was emailed a list of questions on June 24, 2022 and given the opportunity to share with his constituents and OKC FRIDAY readers what he wants them to know about the incident. He chose not to respond ...

Symes said he disagrees with Graham’s letter and took offense to that statement.

"I’m one of the officials,” Symes said. "Every member of this council is one of the officials. All of us on this council serve the residents of The Village.

"Mr. Graham you owe us an apology.”

And there's the rub.

Graham refusing to discuss the incident would make sense if the Nichols Hills Police were charging or even investigating him, but they dropped the case.  And Graham could have said he wasn’t going to discuss it under legal advisement.  As far as I can tell he said nothing publicly, though as Hamba posted has discussed with other council members and said the police were rude to him. And since The Village police have nothing on record reported by Graham or others, would be good to see if NHP have reports of any incidents…and if not, does Graham have anyone able to back up his claims of harrassment…an invoice for tires being replaced at least, the barista at Starbucks perhaps?  Other customers?  Hopefully someone will come forward with his resignation being very publicized.

I would like to see the body cam of him yelling at the police and their response to him.**** Maybe he was yelling simply to be heard.  Nothing that was reported by police sounded like a verbal assault to me.  If so, the Nichols Hills Police overreacted to call it a verbal assault when all he was doing was telling them they were out of their jurisdiction and couldn’t stop anyone for traffic violations, even if he was apparently wrong, though if the one they were handing the ticket to was uncooperative and the mayor was making him even less so, I understand why the Police were ticked about it…but if they had been out of their jurisdiction as the mayor believed, didn’t he had the duty to inform them?  Though unless he knew the one stopped and was sure he wasn’t the violent type, I think it would have been better to get the license plate of the stopped car, a picture of the driver and the location and reported the inappropriate stop later rather than interrupt it as his presence could have escalated a dangerous situation.  Maybe just pull over and record the stop if he was worried about police going past what was allowed.

Is it illegal to talk to police during a traffic stop if not part of the stop?  Or just unwise?

His mistake (if he was wrong about the jurisdiction) is understandable if the agreement between the two cities was so long standing (50 years iirc) that no one discussed it, but if he was wrong, he should have publicly admitted it.  Unless the NHP is really violating the spirit of the agreement, a mutual aid agreement seems in the best interest of both towns, especially for the fire departments.

****Hopefully NBC News or NHP will release the body cam footage publicly.  It would be good to know if Starbucks has the alleged encounter on tape.  I, if I was a reporter, would be interviewing Starbucks employees trying to find the date and time of the incident or to use them as witnesses if no CCTV.

Quote

Graham’s resignation comes two months after he had a tense exchange with two police officers from the neighboring town of Nichols Hills. Bodycam footage of the May 28 incident provided to NBC News by the Nichols Hills Police Department shows the officers pulling over a vehicle — which had allegedly been speeding in Nichols Hills — within the city limits of The Village. The footage then shows Graham pulling alongside the police cruiser and telling the officers to “get out,” saying they can’t pull over cars in his town. Cox, however, told NBC News that his officers were within their rights to pull over the vehicle, because Nichols Hills has mutual aid agreements with the fire and police departments in The Village and Oklahoma City.

You are far too magnanimous, Calm! I was going to suggest that the ex-mayor might want to see if Jussie Smollett is looking for a flatmate.

5 hours ago, Calm said:

Not if the two cities have an established agreement for cross-border policing, which they do. In addition, Oklahoma has a 'fresh pursuit' law that authorises law enforcement to continue making a stop/arrest even across the state border.

Quote

Though if the one they were handing the ticket to was uncooperative and the mayor was making him even less so, I understand why the Police were ticked about it ... his presence could have escalated a dangerous situation.

Indeed. Quoting their report: 'His presence directly agitated an already uncooperative driver during the stop and put our safety at risk'.

Quote

Not sure about Oklahoma, but I just checked our laws here, and yes, it is illegal for what I think are obvious reasons. It is serious enough to carry a punishment of up to 12 months in gaol, plus a fine.

Also, my search brought up that it is also illegal in California under section 148 of their penal code, so there's an American example.

ETA: It's illegal in Oklahoma too, and it includes merely 'delaying' a police officer in the performance of a duty. Totally legal, however, to film/record them.

Quote

If he was wrong, he should have publicly admitted it.

Nah, far better to imply that he has been the innocent victim of anti-gay hate crimes. That way he can further a false but politically useful narrative and inspire the 'progressive' pearl-clutching we've already seen in this thread.
