Can we talk about abbreviations

I get it,  when typing a lot that there will be abbreviations used.  But there are so many used on the board it becomes difficult to follow.  Would is be possible to have an open list of abbreviations.  As I am still trying to figure out what CFR means.  

Does anyone else feel the same way???

We have done it before, but the thread likely got buried. Maybe it should be added into the board guidelines thread…assuming it isn’t there already. 
 

Other abbreviations I use are pretty standard.  CFR is the only one I can think of that is unusual.

Otoh stands for either on the one hand or on the other hand. 
 

Iirc is if I recall correctly 

Imo is in my opinion

Because I do not know what they are when I see them I do not bother trying to remember them.  It just seems to be increasing.   I do not object as long as there is a list somewhere.

Well, others will need to volunteer the ones they use as I don’t pay enough attention to that to make a list. 
 

Otherwise, why not use this thread to post any you come across in the future if you are still wondering…or even if not but simply to fill out the list?

Two more I forgot as I use them more elsewhere

MDDB which refers to this board. Sometimes posters wrote it as MDB because the url has only one d in it, but there was another board that abbreviated that way as well so that one could be confusing, that other board has since changed its name and iirc  would be DMB instead now.  It is a board much heavier in critics, but last I paid attention some believers posted there as well. 
 

ZLMB refers to Zion’s Lighthouse Message Board, an older board, now gone missing into cyberspace, that was quite popular before this one got started…many transferred from there to here when the critics threw it off balance. Moderation also became too heavy handed in an attempt to keep it active (I was the moderator).

Well since you mention it, the mood here has been getting a little heavy,  especially in the thread New Book on Polygamy.  It is difficult to stay away from purely human issues but purely human things like male/female is not why I come here.

PS: I feel bad if I contributed too much personal stuff on the polygamy thread. Sometimes this board is like a family to me, that I can gush out my inner most problems because I don't do that anywhere else, even with my in person family.

RS - relief society

EQ - elder's quorum 

YW/YM - young women and/or men

Add a P to aany of the above for the organizations president 

SP- stake president

MP - mission president

HC - high council

Not that long ago we had an old TV with a CRT that worked just fine.  We called a place that gives stuff to the poor to be told it would not be accepted as it was not a Flat screen.

In the UK there is a really old saying "beggars on horseback".  To be fair it was the organisation that turned down the TV,  they did not explain apart from not a flat screen.

I was surprised about three years ago when we finally bought a flat screen TV and found that Deseret Industries would not accept our perfectly functional analog TV. I was astounded when I learned that no other thrift store would take it, not Good Will or Salvation Army or anyone else. Not even when I offered to include a digital converter box in the donation. 
 

I finally put it out on the curb for bulk-waste pickup, wondering if maybe scavengers would grab it before the garbage collectors got around to it. No one did. 
 

It made me wistful to have witnessed such absolute obsolescence of a once-pervasive and long-lasting form of technology — coming about in the space of a relatively few short years.

Abbreviations, like any form of jargon, inhibit rather than enhance communication. 
 

Forty-odd years ago, when I began my  journalism career, an inviolable rule I learned was “when in doubt, spell it out.” Practically every abbreviation was considered verboten except for a few universally understood ones like FBI and TV. 
 

Even today, I view such cyber-era constructions as “iirc” and “afaik” as indicating the sender does not have enough regard for his receivers to take the time to make his message easily comprehensible to them. Not prudent when trying to persuade or enlighten.

Wouldn’t the same attitude prevent anyone from using less well known words?  Keep to words a fifth grader would know so as to make the message easily comprehensible.

A skillful, talented or conscientious writer creates prose in which the meaning of less-familiar terminology can be easily grasped from context by a reader or listener with normal intelligence.
