While General Conference Starts tomorrow, I am looking forward to some great spiritual talks. I am one who just wants the Savior to return soon. Today would be alright with me, although I have a ways to go as far as improvement. I just read about fish are now living, and apparently surviving in the Dead Sea (see here).  Another sign to mark off done.

Hurrah for Israel!

I would take this more seriously if other headlines on the web page weren't "UFO spaceship material studied by top scientists - the results are MIND-BLOWING" and "Earth could be 'reduced to 330ft sphere' if Large Hadron Collider experiments go wrong."

This has always been true. Also if you notice it's not in the Dead Sea Proper (where they would die) but in sink holes and wells close to the Dead Sea. (Apparently as close as 1 m) The water in these holes is not as salty as the Dead Sea. It's a particular type of carp that evolved apparently from carp in Lake Tiberius called a toothcarp. The area is  Ein Zuqim and apparently there are tours where you can see the fish. The fish is endangered though as I understand it due to dropping water levels.

What! LOL, you mean the Daily Star is not reputable? Honestly, I did not see that until after you posted and I had to go back and see what you meant. Oh well.

Hmm, interesting.

I want the Second Coming to happen so much, I guess I just wanted to mark off another "sign of the times."

I've been to the dead sea - floated around in it (impossible to sink the water is so thick), had a little dead sea mud bath - the place is dead :)

It's interesting that the Dead Sea doesn't vary in salinity the way the Great Salt Lake does. (Different parts of Salt Lake have very different salinities - the northern part apparently is close to the Dead Sea in salinity while the southern part is about ⅓ as salty)

Maybe because no one has built a railroad causeway bisecting the Dead Sea like they have the Great Salt Lake.  Brilliant idea.

Oh, that one's my favorite!

When that ridiculous story started circulating and acquaintances came to me to ask fearfully, "Could this be true, Stargazer?" I enjoyed putting their minds at rest.

"Just don't worry," I would say. "If it happened, it would happen so quick you'd be in heaven before you could frame the question, 'What's hap...?'"  Splat.

No, that's not it, really.  I was about to tell what I really told them, then the zaniness overtook me for a moment.  Heh heh.

OK, this is the story.  Yes, potentially the LHC could form black holes (the subject of the scare) under certain conditions, but since the LHC deals only with the acceleration of extremely small masses, any black hole produced would almost instantly decay through what is called Hawking radiation.  Hawking showed some time back in 1974 (this is not new science) that black holes are actually "fuzzy", and decay (if not replenished through accretion) via quantum pair production.  Micro black holes such as could theoretically be produced in the LHC would decay or evaporate in timescales measured in nano- and micro-seconds. There would literally be no time available for the micro black hole to do anything untoward.  It's perfectly safe, and fear mongers should be taken out and shot a sunrise with a wet sponge.

And in any case, no micro black hole has been shown to have been produced at CERN LHC since they started operation started there in 2008.  My non-expert opinion is that it will never happen.  It's only theoretically possible anyway, and the conditions which would seem to be necessary don't seem to be likely to occur.
