Pregnancy: Marijuana is UNSAFE when taken by mouth or smoked during pregnancy. Marijuana passes through the placenta and can slow the growth of the fetus. Marijuana use during pregnancy is also associated with childhood leukemia and abnormalities in the fetus. Breast-feeding: Using marijuana, either by mouth or by inhalation is LIKELY UNSAFEduring breast-feeding. The dronabinol (THC) in marijuana passes into breast milk and extensive marijuana use during breast-feeding may result in slowed development in the baby. Heart disease: Marijuana might cause rapid heartbeat, short-term high blood pressure. It might also increase the risk of a having heart attack. A weakened immune system: Cannabinoids in marijuana can weaken the immune system, which might make it more difficult for the body to fight infections. Lung diseases: Long-term use of marijuana can make lung problems worse. Regular, long-term marijuana use has been associated with lung cancer and also with several cases of an unusual type of emphysema, a lung disease. Seizure disorders: Marijuana might make seizure disorders worse in some people; in other people it might help to control seizures. Surgery: Marijuana affects the central nervous system. It might slow the central nervous system too much when combined with anesthesia and other medications during and after surgery. Stop using marijuana at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery." https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-947/marijuana It would appear that most of the side effects are because epidolex is marijuana based or high CBD content (thus marijuana with similar content would tend to result in the same side effects). Are these mainly from using the cannabis with THC? I do understand that we need to be cautious. I know I've been hellbent of the good it can do. But do know pharmaceuticals have pages of side affects that are scarier, IMO.

Receiving FDA approval somehow magically makes a product have more adverse reactions? Tacenda, those "pages of side effects" means the product has actually been through clinical trials. Full spectrum CBD oil has the SAME, if not MORE, risks since there are more compounds in it (which have not been studied for side effects. epidiolex IS CBD. Knowing the potential side effects (even over-the-counter medicines have pages of side effects) means that we understand the risks and benefits and can make an informed decision of risk vs benefit. I CANNOT make such an informed decision if it has not been through clinical trial. When you start seeing pages of claimed benefits with almost no claimed risks, without any clinical trials, then you have reason to mistrust the product. When you see the opposite of many side effects with only 1-2 approved uses in clinical trials, then you know that you can make an informed decision.

It is the schedule I status by the DEA that is inhibiting drug companies from studying, manufacturing, and legally selling marijuana based drugs. Because we recently have had a marijuana based product approved by the FDA, we might see changes soon with the DEA. Along with marijuana, heroin, LSD, and cocaine are on the schedule 1 drug list. Over the last 50 years petitions have come before the DEA to change it's classification to schedule 2 or a lower which would allow drug companies to conduct further research without the ultra strict regulations. However, the FDA and DEA have held firm. In 2016 they again affirmed their commitment to keep marijuana as a schedule 1 drug. Yes, they have approved a marijuana base product recently and in 2016 they allowed research companies to use marijuana grown from other facilities besides there own, but this is ridiculous. Marijuana is legal in 9 states but research of the drug itself is severely limited?! It's time to change the drugs status. This is a clear indication of the problems we have with regulatory agencies and their ability to make rules in which we the people have very little influence over. I wish the fight form medical marijuana was being fought on this front. 2

Quote In 2013, the University of Guelph (in Canada) conducted research suggesting that up to one-third of herbal supplements tested consisted mainly of filler and did not include the plants listed on their labels. That study, published in the journal BMC Medicine (October 2013) found that of 44 herbal products from 12 companies tested, only two companies had labels that were entirely authentic, without substitutions, contaminants or fillers. Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of products had plant species not listed on the ingredient label, 32 percent contained substitutions and 20 percent contained fillers not included on the label. https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/lawsuit/herbal-supplements.html Do you honestly think that herbal companies are not ALL about the money too. The difference is that they are unregulated, so they can get away with more deception, lies, dangerous practices in order to line their pockets. I'm not worried about herbal companies right now, I'm worried for those families that need cannabis right now! Not 10 - 15 years from now. And prop 2 isn't about recreational use at all. The group against prop 2 are liars when they say this. But maybe these families would be better in another state if they're able to financially handle the move because Utah definitely doesn't know how to separate church and state. And there are many uses for cannabis, so many. Why would anyone want to narrow that down to a very few? Have you read Prop 2? https://ballotpedia.org/Utah_Proposition_2,_Medical_Marijuana_Initiative_(2018) I bet it must feel good to live in a state the has medical cannabis, just in case you may need it. These can be put in capsule or tinctures w/o smoking it. Why in the world are we against this? For heaven sakes, people smoke marijuana right now when it is illegal.

I'm sure those side effects are from CBD. It will be interesting to see how long Epidiolex stays on the market. I think it mostly was pursued due to the legal problems with THC containing cannabis. However, numerous international studies seem to indicate broad spectrum medical cannabis is more efficacious at treating seizures than CBD alone. Of course Edidiolex is targeted to a limited range of seizure patients as well, so comparing the two is not a direct apple to apple comparison. Quote A team of Brazilian researchers conducted a meta-analysis of studies from 2013 to 2017 that have explored the therapeutic benefits of CBD for epilepsy patients. The results were published in the journal Frontiers In Neurology last week. While the main purpose of the review was to determine the safety and efficacy of CBD for certain forms of epilepsy, the researchers also distinguished between CBD-rich cannabis extracts and purified CBD products, which contain only trace amounts of other cannabinoids, if any. Consistent with a growing body of scientific research, the study found that CBD treatment reduces the frequency of seizures, even among patients with treatment-resistant forms of epilepsy. About two-thirds of patients included in studies under review had fewer seizures—and six out of 11 those studies “showed over 80 percent of the patients reporting improvement.” But in the studies where patients received CBD-rich extracts, that improvement was even greater. Seventy-one percent of patients treated with CBD-rich extracts reported improvements, compared to just 36 percent of patients who received purified CBD products. https://www.marijuanamoment.net/whole-plant-marijuana-entourage-effect-helps-patients-more-than-purified-cbd-study-finds/ Of course, if it was smoked, I think the list of harmful side effects would be greater, but it seems to me that if I were a seizure patient, I would like to be able to legally try/vape a whole plant product such as AC-DC. I think success of Epidiolex will definitely bring more attention to this matter.

pogi Posted August 30, 2018 Author Posted August 30, 2018 Good news: Quote Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday he wants the Legislature to take action on medical marijuana regardless of what happens in November with the proposition on the ballot. "I think I'm in a position to get this done," Herbert told reporters after the taping of his monthly news conference on KUED Ch. 7. He said he would use his office's "bully pulpit" to come up with a compromise lawmakers will pass. During the program, the governor again said he will vote against Proposition 2, a citizens' initiative to legalize medical marijuana, noting "most rational people understand there are some problems" with it. He said lawmakers could come up with a "common-sense position" on using marijuana to relieve pain and suffering without promoting recreational use, including having county health departments serving as dispensaries. Legislative action will be needed whether or not voters approve Proposition 2, Herbert said. Proposition 2 is opposed by a coalition of church, civic, business and law enforcement officials that includes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church sent an email to members last week urging them to vote no. The email, from Elder Craig C. Christensen, a General Authority Seventy and president of the Utah Area of the church, also asked members to join "in a call to state elected officials to promptly work with medical experts, patients and community leaders to find a solution that will work for all Utahns, without the harmful effects that will come to pass if Proposition 2 becomes law." Herbert expressed frustration that Congress "sat on its hindquarters" for years rather than take action to allow for research into medical marijuana so it could be treated as a medicine, prescribed by doctors and distributed by pharmacists. "Let's start now," he said, adding he will be OK with Utah moving forward on medical marijuana even if Washington does nothing. "I will, absolutely," the governor said. While he said he'd prefer a "dual-track" approach with Congress, states needs to play the cards they've been dealt on the issue. https://www.ksl.com/article/46383584/gov-herbert-says-hell-use-bully-pulpit-to-get-lawmakers-to-act-on-medical-marijuana Vote NO on prop 2! That is good news, and is exactly what I suggested earlier in this or another thread on medical cannabis. Since it is looking like Prop 2 might pass, the best solution is to steal its thunder with a better bill. If that doesn't happen, the state might turn into Colorado quickly. The best solution is to allow medical cannabis, and keep out the psychoactive THC strains. i think that is really the best of both worlds. Anyone who sells cannabis should be subject to state regulation processes. Maybe we could also try letting individuals grow their own for their own medical use.
