mnn727 Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 I find some Utahans believe they are the center of the Universe and everyone should know what some local yokel is doing. Come on out into the big wide world.

Funny, I've lived in 12 cities in 4 vastly different states, visited 3 different countries and have never seen it to the degree I see some Utah LDS people do it..
JAHS Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Usually they are pretty funny, but he does drive close to the edge sometimes with some of the things he says. Maybe that's why his Bishop keeps him serving in the nursery. ;-)

Boanerges Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 I've been reading Kirby for years. I think he's hilarious and sometimes in the midst of the lightheartedness makes some really good points. I don't live in Utah and never have (it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there), and I have never touched a physical copy of the Tribune, I have always read his stuff online. He writes both church related and non-church related stuff. The church stuff usually comes at the end of the week. 1

mnn727 Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) 18 hours ago, Atheist Mormon said: Hard to picture someone A TBM (if you are) with no Utah connections.... Why? Both my wife and I are Adult Converts of over 20 years now. You know.....we're the reason missionaries go out all over the world for. We have no relatives living in Utah, we've visited twice (touristy things) and there's NO WAY I'd ever move there. Some (many?) tend to take themselves too seriously. Seriously, most Utah Mormons should live out in the real world for longer than just a mission. And I won't even talk about the people living in Utah that hate the LDS Church, in most cases their attitudes are just sadly laughable. Mormons make up 1.7% of the U.S. population. Now think about living where, out of 100 people, 98 are not LDS and probably knew almost nothing about Mormons. Think about that and you realize Utah is not ordinary and certainly not the center of the universe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not disrespecting Utah Mormons here, but we really are just a small minority no matter what it looks like where you live. Edited September 3, 2016 by mnn727 2
BCSpace Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Quote As LDS do any of you find Kirby's columns distasteful? It would depend on whether or not he's active in Church attendance in his home ward, does his home teaching for real (priesthood in the home), serves in callings, is politically conservative, etc. If so on all those, then I might judge some of his stuff to be tongue-in-cheek.

Come on out into the big wide world. I find that some in the "big wide world" who accuse Utahns of provincialism do things that betray a sort of reverse provincialism on their own part -- like spelling Utahns as "Utahans." Virtually nobody who is decently acquainted with the state and its people spells the word in that manner. Reminds me of the old New Yorker magazine cover in which most of the map has New York City locations and the rest of the United States is pictured as being just kind of out there someplace.
