snowflake Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I am currently reading through the book of Alma (on chapter 20), I am a very visual learner and am looking for a map to help me better understand the cities, rivers, seas and places described in the book of Alma. I tried LDS.org and Mormon.org with no success. I don't have a paper BOM, and am using LDS.org online scriptures to read Alma, and just can't find map of these lands anywhere in official websites. Help.

Help. Funny. I found lots of theoretical maps with a quick google - https://www.google.com/search?q=book+of+mormon+map&biw=1920&bih=911&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiv1MTY0PPNAhUGKh4KHe1MD0gQ_AUIBigB Take your pick of the one you like best. But since we don't know exactly where events took place I don't know why you would be looking for an official one on Church sites. Oh wait...I think I do know why. 2
Calm Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I prefer ones that don't superimpose on a actual map for reading scripture. Unfortunately I haven't found those online, but this one that does superimpose on Mesoamerica may be helpful: http://bookofmormonresources.blogspot.com/2016/01/book-of-mormon-lands-map-january-2016.html There might be one nonsuperimposed in the seminary and institute manuals. Can't check myself due to crashing.

I saw the ones on Google of course, some of them are of the New York area, others in Mexico, one showed the entire U.S.A., and a few look like they are just made up places that don't really exist. What one would you suggest?

Calm Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Turned out the SI site isn't clashing as much as other parts of lds.org
smac97 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Here's a link to a playlist for FAIR's YouTube videos about BOM geography. Thanks, -Smac 1

Jeanne Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) You are a good man snowflake. I look at maps and get the same directions upside down. When I travel, I use McDonalds. 7 Elevens..and Mini Marts to know when to turn. I was in China Town in San Francisco for many days...trying to get out! Goodis luck with this. Geography is so not my thing. Edited July 14, 2016 by Jeanne

My number came from the pdf count...takes awhile to load up on the page and I got tired of waiting, but that is what the table of contents indicates.
Calm Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Fyi, there are a numberof theories of location so you will find maps from various places in the world. However, the official position is there has been no revelation on the matter outside the BoM itself, so I prefer to use the seminary type kind for reading and just use the other maps for testing the geographical theories they belong to.
The Nehor Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 FYI, the Book of Mormon took place in Greenland which makes it hard to find a good map.
BCSpace Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Many hypothetical maps out there. Here's one with a fairly non traditional view of a Mesoamerican LGT, but like most, the cities are in good relative position: http://www.mormontopics.com/maps/mapdirector.htm Having read the book, I don't find it at all implausible. But here is the one that seems the most far-fetched to me, a Malaysian LGT: https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/pdf/131 30-34.pdf
sheilauk Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 One study map which I have used, and which is based more on linking/following the journeys rather than based on any geography, is found here:https://www.theredheadedhostess.com/blog/scripture-study-tips-2/book-of-mormon-scripture-study-tips-2/scripture-study-helps/ (then follow link to download a pdf or word document).

I'm looking for your homeland Nehor! No all jokes aside, I have been re-reading the BOM for the first time in quite a while and this geography issue is starting to bother me a bit, the fact that there is no "official" map or well documented BOM lands endorsed by the church seems odd.
snowflake Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 Quote Thank you all for the links to the available maps, I appreciate it and will be looking at them all!
Kevin Christensen Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 An official map, while it might be reassuring to some, would actually create problems. Quote This is why Joseph Smith opposed creeds, not because they are false teachings,28 but because “creeds set up stakes, and say, “Hitherto thou shalt come, and no further'; which I cannot subscribe to.”29 The message of the First Vision is not that a true creed had come to replace the false ones, but that the heavens had opened. You don’t need to worship at a cistern when you’ve got a fountain (see Jeremiah 2:13). Creeds tend to create rigid background expectations which become “abominable” by promoting static authoritarianism that resists further light and knowledge.30 This is not to say that we should bow without resistance to every wind of doctrine that happens to blow by (Ephesians 4:11-16), but that resistance to new ideas should be just as carefully considered as acceptance of such (Acts 10:9-28). Too often, creeds buy present conformity (as when the Inquisitors came to chat with Galileo about astronomy, torture, and correct thinking) with the coin of future faith (such as those for whom the Galileo incident becomes the defining myth of the relationship between science and religion).31 Creeds make for spiritual vulnerability in those whose cisterns are too brittle to change shape and too fragile to take shocks.32 We're free to seek further light and knowledge, and let "truth cut its own way," as Joseph Smith observed. I'm particularly impressed by Larry Poulson's refinement of Sorenson's Mesoamerican model, particularly in identifying the Sidon. If we start in the right place, we should see lots of things starting to make sense and fit together. http://bomgeography.poulsenll.org/index.html Kevin Christensen Canonsburg, PA 1

Brant Gardner Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 There is a very new generic map that is very good. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it be published separately, and the one I see on Book of Mormon Central is to small to read some of the city names (and least for the magnification of my reading glasses--younger eyes will vary). You can see it here. It is an updated version of Sorenson's generic map, but I think it does a pretty good job of showing why certain events happen as they do in Alma. 1

Since seeing it, I can't unsee it. Here are just two examples: Land Northward Land of Nephi to Zarahemla The mountain pass between Gideon and Nephihah fit, as does the pass between Manti/Minon and Moroni. The pass from the west coast to Ammonihah also fits. All the wildernesses are represented, the narrow neck is the right width, there is a sea that divides the land in the right place, a north-flowing river, hills where they need to be, and archaeological ruins dating back to the 6th century BC. And most importantly, north is truly north. Here's the newer illustration superimposed over the heart of Peninsular Siam. Red dots are the proposed cities in this model (not the same as the Malay model linked to above), mostly based on existing archeological sites (500 BC-400 AD) or strategic positions next to rivers and mountain passes. Blue lines are the Ta Pi River. White lines are the routes that have been active for the past two millennia. The red line, passing through Ammonihah to Bountiful, is an active fault that slipped 2000 years ago. If its all a coincidence, then it is a truly bizarre one. Edited July 16, 2016 by Rajah Manchou
Doctrine 612 Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Here is a map I made a few years ago, it is one I made to make the story easier to read. This map is not a real world map.
