The horrific inconsistency

Well said.  One thing is for certain - I don't pretend to understand the dilemma from the perspective of those who have to actually live it.   I am far enough removed from this issue with my own children that I have no place to harshly judge other parents who face the reality of dealing with it and the confusion and pain it must cause.  It's much easier for me to armchair philosophize when it is not my kid facing these social challenges.

My son has come out as gay (which I know is not the same as transgender), and his emotional health has been a roller coaster for several years. Currently he is active LDS and trying to be celibate. I can tell that some days are very difficult and I have told him many times that I will support his lifestyle choice. I don't know what path his life will eventually take, but I worry about him every day.

The American College of Pediatricians has come out stating that it is harmful to teach children that they can choose their gender.

Here is the article.

Very interesting link. Thanks for this.

Abstract

Gender identity disorder (GID), recently renamed gender dysphoria (GD), is a rare condition characterized by an incongruity between gender identity and biological sex. Clinical evidence suggests that schizophrenia occurs in patients with GID at rates higher than in the general population and that patients with GID may have schizophrenia-like personality traits. Conversely, patients with schizophrenia may experience alterations in gender identity and gender role perception. Neurobiological research, including brain imaging and studies of finger length ratio and handedness, suggests that both these disorders are associated with altered cerebral sexual dimorphism and changes in cerebral lateralization. Various mechanisms, such as Toxoplasma infection, reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), early childhood adversity, and links with autism spectrum disorders, may account for some of this overlap. The implications of this association for further research are discussed.

I was not aware God wrote ans science manuals to be wrong or right? What did I miss, I do try to be well read for a redneck? :)

No, but you'd expect at least not to condemn scientists showing the truth...Throughout the human history God consistently has been wrong side of the scientific truth.

Oh yes, I know the history very well......Perhaps you can give us some examples what part of the history was enlightened by The history of God....

i do not understand the point of this thread. The fact that people are born with various abnormalities, be it gender mix up, downs syndrome, or any other list of challenges, has no bearing on God knowing anything. We are born with all sorts of challenges. This is the point of mortality.

Actually, I was creating this post against this type of thinking process from a believer's point.....

The facts of the Planet regarding it's biological history is full of stories like this, how could anyone entertain the thought this process is generated by an "intelligent Design?" . I'm so lucky that I didn't go through of what those parents going through.....It's 100% evolutionary process determines our well being & future. I hardly recall ever praying for well being of my kids, I knew it was futile.

Now I am encouraged that we are finally coming to terms with the futility of our fantastic wishes & desires and focus on where we truly can make a huge difference (the progress is excruciatingly slow). And the worse outcome of this believers cumulative efforts of proselytizing and financial contributions creates forces of colossal mediocrity that we must feed on & on, not only that, worse; create a next generation of piece meal they can feed on.

Or science. Of course it never changes and teaches Truth.

I know you have told us many times you speak many languages.

What is your first language?

I don't and the LDS Church has not be around throughout human history.

I don't have one for sure, I grew up with two of them simultaneously and that was not good.

Pa Pa.... I don't have a specific gripe against LDS Church, It is a small part of a bigger symptom which desperately trying to sugarcoat our perilous walk with the promises of Afterlife..This is sad that we follow them rather than trying to fix our immediate challenges.

I assume via your screen name that you do have issues with the Church (well any for that matter). That said, I have never known a Church that is more about solving our problems in "this life". Also, the entire western world view under which we all live and live better than any other people have ever lived is rooted in Biblical religions. Even the right, not to believe...

Thinking... I am truly sorry that you and your son have this challenge.  It does my heart good to see you being such a loving and accepting father - good on ya!  I believe part of being a parent is teaching us to be like God who loves all his children - sometimes I think that is a bigger part than even the teaching part, for us to learn true unconditional love.

I felt awful for the Bishop.  He tried to talk to the parents about how all kids should dress appropriately for church, how some would wear their bathing suit or shorts if they could, etc.  But, the Mom replied with how she thought this would be teaching him to hide who he was sexually if they only allowed him to be himself at home.  His teacher reached out to him over and over again too and of course did all she could to discourage anything the other kids did or said that would hurt him.

Long story short, they stopped coming to church over this.  I felt awful because I really loved this family.  They have since moved away and I still feel bad about it.  But, I cannot imagine that a parent wouldn't know that kids are going to tease in this situation.  In a perfect world, no one would judge or ridicule, but we all know this world is not perfect.

.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that, yes, this is bad parenting.  If I had been in a position to counsel the family, I think I would have told them to explain to the boy the biological differences between boys and girls, what is culturally appropriate for church, and then help him decide what to do within those parameters.  I would also suggest getting the boy (and maybe his dad) a kilt.

It's really no different from me not allowing my daughter to act like a cat during church.  I am not stifling her creativity; I am teaching her that there is a time and place for everything.

This is not easy.....But you have the right attitude. It will help him immeasurably.....

Have we really reached the apex of scientific truth such that we can no confidently assert that God is wrong? Funny how every generation does this and they were all wrong. But this time....this time we will be right.

I have a hard time critiquing God's scientific statements as I found he rarely makes any.

Are you kidding? Let's start from Galileo.....He (Cardinal) didn't even blink an eye throwing him under the bus..But of course everything started very, very wrong from the book of Genesis on, flat Earth. standing four corners of pillars, creation story of plants, Adam, Eve....persecution of science in middle ages...History is full of it...

If you studied the world history it sticks out like a sore thumb in every level......

I think you're getting this all backwards. We don't believe in God because we've found persuasive evidence of 'intelligent design' and then concluded that there must be a God. Instead, we know God as a real person independent of the circumstantial 'evidence' either pro or con.

Lol

Talk about horrific inconsistency!

The Cardinals mistake was exactly what you are doing right now! !

He thought scripture was about science and he is now seen as a fool, and so....

Well figure it out!

You also think scripture is about science

Clue: it is not.

Great.

Scripture is not about anything anybody can utilize, it is a huge waste of time.......Tell me what part of it can help me, since you are throwing it's defenders under the bus...Why shouldn't I throw it's defenders now?

What good it is collecting thousands of people in (otherwise) completely useless buildings that only serves to make me pay more taxes? I work for a living, everybody around me work they generate something....I don't see organized religion doing it (except sucking the money & energy without any return).
