JLHPROF Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I think Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith is the only book I rank equal with scripture and should be studied as such by all who want to understand Mormonism. The pattern of the restoration is so clearly traced from the simple beginnings no so different from any other evangelical group until as more and more light is revealed and revelation received, the full doctrines of heaven and exaltation are laid before us. 1

Preferably not something too basic. 'Mormon Doctrine of Deity' by Brigham H Roberts. It's available for $9.99 from Deseret Book as an e-book. It's definitely not basic. Also 'God, Man and the Universe' by Hyrum L Andrus. It's also available from Deseret Book as an e-book for $9.99. 1

Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling (The parts that talk about theology are excellent). LDS Beliefs (A replacement of Mormon Doctrine). 2
Scott Lloyd Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 A book by Robert Millet called "The Mormon Faith." It's several years old; I presume it's still in print. Also, there's a short, encyclopedic type reference work published directly by the Church called "True to the Faith." Go to LDS.org and search for it (it's not convenient for me to find links just now). There's a much heftier reference work called "Encyclopedia of Mormonism." Easy to find with Google. 3

What do you think of Millet? I actually have purchased several books from him. I also have a DVD where he does a discussion on theology with an evangelical pastor, Greg Johnson.

I am not sure how to take this "we have no doctrine" perspective. Am I correct in understanding this as an opinion of some LDS folks and not official teaching? 2

I teach from it every week in my Sunday school class. I never grow tired of it. I think it's basic, in a sense, but also rather comprehensive. Please don't forget to read the additional scriptures at the end of each chapter; I think sometimes the best stuff is lurking there. 1

Blomberg, How Wide the Divide?: A Mormon and an Evangelical in Conversation (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1997). 1
