Book on Mormon temple history

A long time ago (mid-90s), I browsed a book at Deseret book which was either a general Mormon history or Mormon temple history specifically. I can't remember the title and I'm trying to find it or a similar book discussing temple history. The book had some very interesting things about the history of the endowment ceremony, such as that in live sessions long ago Satan wore black face. Anyone have an idea what book this would be, or other book suggestions? I do not care to read anti-Mormon literature.

I find it hard to believe the claim that the actor doing a live Satan role wore blackface wasn't all over the internet if so.  I think you are misremembering a discussion about him wearing a piece of black clothing.

I have never heard of anyone in blackface.  I know that Satan's apron was black and used to have Masonic symbols on it in the pre-1990 live endowment sessions where those were held.

I have never heard of someone being in blackface.

Prior to 1970s the devil was described as having black skin (this was removed).
