Beards!

I say this as an outsider, obviously, but...

bring back the beards!  The early LDS prophets had some awesome beards.  I particularly like Brigham Young's later beard

And, Lorenzo Snow

And, by far my favorite, Joseph F. Smith

Will the beard ever come back?  Or did the hippies forever co-opt it so it can no longer be an image of masculinity and patriarchy?

I know this is sexist but I absolutely oppose beards for the relief society sisters.

It will probably come back at some point.

I still will not get one. After two weeks of not shaving I have scruffy fuzz that makes me look like I belong on an FBI watchlist or a registered sex offender roll. So basically until I can grow a good beard I don't see why anyone else should be allowed to have one. ;)

My husband's beard helps him look like a proper professor and less of a teddy bear to be pushed around by students.  He couldn't handled one until post30 though.

Beards are alive and well in the Church, though the long ones are admittedly few and far between.  I see one every now and then though.

A blog last year had a competition for beards, with awards for different categories based on LDS prophets, apostles, and leadership beards.

I've only gotten one to grow this year, and am a bit over 30.

I just turned 30 (sidenote: AGH), and my beard is so incredibly lame. To compound the problem, my skin is super-sensitive, and shaving more than, like, once or twice a week (when I can manage to power through the blood, sweat, and tears) turns me into one giant patch of razorburn. It is a deeply lose-lose kind of bummer. I do my best not to blame my native-american-hispanic-irish-english-german-welsh ancestry for my follicular weirdness, but sometimes it is difficult.

Hello Jeremy...

There is one fellow... one... on the BYU basketball team (I think it's BB, could be FB), that has a beard because he too has a really sensitive skin that erupts when he shaves, so there he is on the campus... one of the only fellows that is able to wear a beard.

Heh. Gotta say, I do think the anti-beard policy at BYU is not only laughably absurd, but downright immoral.

(Shocker, I know. I'm such a Britta. Philosophically, I mean; I'm much less pretty.)

Personally, I look good with facial hair, and I can have a reasonably thick beard in about a week and a half.

This is currently prevented by my calling as an Ordinance Worker at the temple, however.

Last saturday I had my back, shoulders and the back of my arms professionally shaved, it's growing back in and it.itches.like.you.know.what

I love the fancy Gillette razor blades that make shaving easier. Did having to be clean shaven start with David O. McKay, because if you look at the Teachings of the Presidents books all the prophets have beards until McKay and then it's clean shaven from him on.

Google Orson Pratt and ask yourself if an interview with him would not chill you to the bone. Personally I have had some form of facial hair ever since I returned from a mission. It's white now so I try to emulate the early church leaders at least facially because spiritually I fail miserably.

Maybe when Christ returns it will become fashionable again to sport a beard.

My brother (far left) with a real beard he had to keep long so he could be an extra in the Life of Christ videos.

That's really sad.

Christ had a beard - pretty sure they'd let him work in the temple. Maybe.

Just because President McKay didn't have one for so many years....

I wish I could give you 3 rep points for the use of follicular.  Of course, if anyone googles this term, they are bound to misunderstand and take it to places you didn't mean it to go......

The Romans called the Germanic tribes "barbarians" because they wore beards... the Latin "barba" means beard (and that's where we get barber and barbarian).

There is nothing wrong with men growing facial hair.  It is natural and God given.  Let it grow!

Likewise, there is nothing wrong with women growing leg and armpit hair, too.  It is natural and God given.

How many of our aesthetic judgements are based on cultural norms?  I'd hope that God would roll his eyes at such things, but then again, who am I to project my thoughts onto God?

Hum, I suppose I should clarify that my follicular woes have, as far as I am aware, little if anything to do with endometrium.

I think barba is a folk-etymology, btw. Pretty sure it's actually an onomatopoeia, as in, "the sound those stupid babbling barbarians from across the river make".

Women should have hair wherever they darn well please.

I had a full beard by the end of the 8th grade.  I think it must have been some weird genetic trick - my father nor my brothers had similar facial hair.

After my mission I wore a beard, at my wife's request and pleasure.  It was always kept trimmed and was never long.  This remained for many years.  Mid 40's I shaved it off and have kept it off ever since.  Worked in the temple for almost ten years during this time frame.

For the last several years I wear a goatee.  It has long since gone from black to white.  I still keep it trimmed short.

I always preferred a beard, mostly because I hated shaving so much.  Of course, it could be that I was just very lazy for most of my life.  Wearing a beard sure beats shaving.
