Buff General Authorities?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I just hosted the missionaries for dinner. One of them said he heard from a Mission President that the General Authorities are required to exercise 30 minutes every day and that they did so at a gym in the basement of the Church headquarters in SLC. This sounded like a bit of a stretch to me. Not wanting this to become part of routine mission lore I told him I'd exert myself and find out. I figured someone on MDDB would be able to to answer without breaking a sweat. Anybody know if this is story has weight or is it just uplifting missionary myth and should be permanently benched?

Have no clue, but it would make sense health wise to include an exercise break in their schedules.  One company my husband worked for did that (basically paid for them to take an 45 break specifically for exercise in the on location gym).  It would cut down on insurance costs and improve productivity.

I've heard that too but I also heard that Pres. Hinckely say he gets exercise going to funerals of guys who worked out so you just never know and no, don't pull a CFR on it, I heard years ago no idea where!

Many of the ancient BoM prophets had an outstanding level of buffitude; leastways that's what the official doctrinal artwork shows. Not unreasonable to expect the same from the current gang.

:D:rofl::D  It sounds like something President Hinckley might say.  When seeking attribution for a gem, my motto is, "Attribute it to the general authority you think said it and use it anyway."  After all, it's not like we have to worry about false doctrine creeping into addresses delivered by the rank-and-file, "dueling authorities," and other such issues in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ;):D

I doubt it's a requirement (who would require it of them?) but if they, like all Church employees and employees of Church-owned companies are insured through Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators, they have a wellness plan that includes incentives to keep fit and, perhaps, access to an exercise facility.

Thanks Scott, I'll pass that on to the elder and will press the issue no further.

Ok, you heard it here first folks. Feiberg's doctrinal maple leaf in the fall at the battle of Cumorah can finally put the geography question to rest. It doesn't matter that Mormon's biceps are bigger than his head. It's the New England maple leaf!

I'm just supposin'. I really have no idea.

Well, in the immortal words of one of the vocal exercises my former drama coach had us do, "Moses supposes his toeses was roses, but Moses supposes erroneously"? ;):D

When I consulted for one of the Church offices in the early 1980s, my boss took me to the Deseret gym ay noontime for a swim, where Joseph Anderson would be doing laps every day -- he was in his 90s at the time.

I'm sure at some point during the missionary grapevine the word "encouraged" was changed to "required".

The Deseret Gym is no more. The Conference Center now stands where it used to be.

That strikes me as likely, acquainted as I am with missionary grapevines.

Cool--as you can tell, I don't get out (there) much!

Notice , however, the kettle of vultures in the lower background. even the broad ranging turkey vultures have moved south by the fall. This hints at Mesoamerican vultures so apparently Friberg is covering his bets.

This is indeed a weighty issue. You can press on for an answer, but most people don't care squat. On the other hand, Church leaders have asked us to raise the bar and lift the hands that hang down. Perhaps they are leading by example. I heard a rumor that Pres Monson has a sign on his desk that says, "The Book of Mormon will pump you up." Members need to curl up with the Book and work out their salvation with sweat and trembling. You know I'm just jerking you around.

Friberg lived and died in the days before Book of Mormon geography wars.

Personally, I think the maple leaf was Photoshopped in there by some heartlander.

I have just wondered how BOM era warriors had Roman armor.

Elder Bednar mentions about working out in his gym in a dvd that come with one of his books. It was whilst working out he was inspired to write Act on Doctrine and The Power to Become as follow up books to Increase in Learning.

Maybe I need to work out more to get more inspiration and perspiration :)

"Required too"...that is silly, not to mention some are so old and feeble they could have a heart attack. Some cannot even stand to give talks at General Conference. I for one what them to stay alive and not bring about an early demise.

Possibly.  But since Friberg only painted doctrine, we must assume that the millions of dead leading up to and culminating in Cumorah was too great a feasting opportunity for the birds to ignore.   8)   BTW, just curious, when do the last of the vultures leave on their migratory journey in autumn?

Well, he only died 4 years ago, so the war was still raging.   And nope, I checked my old trackting BOM with pics, it's in there too.   Perhaps the conspiracy is so widespread that all printed copies of the painting have been covertly altered by a massive secret combination.  ;-)

However, since he painted this in the 50's, when the Meso LGT was barely a thought and the Heartland LGT was nonexistent, we must assume a different approach.
