rodheadlee Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 Well I guess I learned something new. Coaches make a lot of moolah! Does any of that trickle down to these college athletes? They get a scholarship worth up to 200k (depending on the school), world class facilities to train in, trainers, media exposure for their hopeful NFL career, world class coaches to teach them the game, nutritional help etc. and the smart ones get a diploma/degree.
Rob Osborn Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I dont see why a college coach should get paid more than any other teacher at the school. Who do we worship? God or Mammon? 1
carbon dioxide Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 College sports is an important aspect of the whole experience going to college. To end it for the actions of a few players is to punish the students and current and future players does not make sense. The policy should be simple. Get into a brawl, the player loses their spot on the team and their sports scholarship.
carbon dioxide Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I dont see why a college coach should get paid more than any other teacher at the school. Who do we worship? God or Mammon?NCAA football and basketball bring in big $$$ to the schools. If one wants a good coach, they need to pay market value. I have not problem with what they are paid if the money comes from the revenues generated by the team. If the tuition is being raised to pay for the coach, that is different.
carbon dioxide Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I met McMahon in the 80's, he dated a friend of mine. She also went out with Steve Young. And I believe McMahon went on to marry the daughter of a SP.Does anyone know the story behind him wearing sunglasses? When younger he was trying to get a knot out of his shoes and used a fork, and when bringing it up he stabbed his eye. Also, I think it's sad he is suffering from dementia, it may have stemmed from getting hit in the head too much. I thought it was wonderful for BYU to recognize him at a recent game.I believe you are right. I served my mission in Chicago in the early 90s and we were invited to their home for dinner one night. He was fairly quite but his wife was really cool and a strong member. I believe they have since divorced.

Fair market value just shows what we worship more. We have made sports so competitive and worthy of great worship that we pay the coaches more than the doctors who save the lives of our loved ones. Just shows where our hearts are. Thats all. 1

Thats all. That is all a part of capitalism. Professional athletes make a lot more than the coaches but even the athletes pale in comparison to hedge fund managers of which some make over a billion a year in compensation. I guess the nice thing about it all is that nobody takes any of it with them when they die. The billionaires take as much money as the homeless guy when they die. 1

sunstoned Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I dont see why a college coach should get paid more than any other teacher at the school. Who do we worship? God or Mammon? I fully agree with you. I think sports and sports related salaries have gotten way out of line. This is one reason I do not watch or support these types of athletics.
Calm Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) I met McMahon in the 80's, he dated a friend of mine. She also went out with Steve Young. And I believe McMahon went on to marry the daughter of a SP.Yes he did. That was the stake I grew up in and the family was in my ward, she was one year younger than I was. Very nice family. Parents were absolutely fantastic people, she was rather quiet and I was a turtle impersonator at the time so all I knew was she was beautiful and put effort into that beauty. Not that she flaunted it or anything…it was simply what anyone could see. Edited December 24, 2014 by calmoriah
pogi Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I dont see why a college coach should get paid more than any other teacher at the school. Who do we worship? God or Mammon? Sports are the big money makers for colleges. The more money football rakes in, the whole college benefits, not just the head coach. If math was the big money maker, math teachers would make as much as football coaches. It's not about worshiping Mammon, it's about wise investment. 1
Kenngo1969 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 So, what do you think he gets paid? No, no, son, that's not an appropriate response to a CFR. I ask again, where are you getting your information that Bronco Mendenhall is being paid $1M/yr. from?

Traela Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Not for everyone, many go without ever touching on the sports aspect at all.Agreed. One of my mother's friends expressed surprise to her that my daughter would go to a school (BYUI) without sports. Mom reminded her that not everyone worships at the alter of football. Personally, I don't care for, or about, football. (Although I actually know who is playing in the Rose Bowl this year, but only because both teams have a connection to my kids' disease.) it wouldn't bother me at all if BYU-Provo dropped it.

And just a handful of people in my circle have the sports stamina to care about baseball through the long drawn out season.
katherine the great Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I dont see why a college coach should get paid more than any other teacher at the school. Who do we worship? God or Mammon?. Do you think university presidents should get paid more then teachers?
JAHS Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 . Do you think university presidents should get paid more then teachers? If those university presidents used to be teachers themselves, then yes I see nothing wrong with them getting paid more (a little more).
Kenngo1969 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Bronco has a contract clause that excludes the public from knowing how much he makes but estimates are that he makes between 1-2 million per season. Coaches in the bigger conferences like the SEC make 4-7 million per season. CFR? I doubt it. A more likely explanation is that BYU, as a private institution, does not have to disclose salaries. So, what do you think he gets paid? No, no, son, that's not an appropriate response to a CFR. I ask again, where are you getting your information that Bronco Mendenhall is being paid $1M/yr. from? Estimates done with a google search. You've made two as-yet unsubstantiated claims: 1. That Bronco Mendenhall's "estimated" salary is $1M/yr., and 2. That his contract terms prohibit disclosure of his salary. In response to your second contention, I stated that it's more likely that BYU, as a private institution, simply is not required to disclose Coach Mendenhall's salary. I have now asked you (this will make twice) to substantiate those claims. In response, rather than doing so you have: 1. Invited me to join you in speculating about Coach Mendenhall's salary ("What do you think he gets paid?"); and2. Invited me to satisfy my own CFR. Again, that's not how it works. Yes, I'm fully capable of doing a Google search, but that doesn't tell me where you got your information. You make the claim, you substantiate it. It's very simple. Just (1) post an excerpt, and (2) post the link to where you found the information. (If you refuse to satisfy the CFR, per Board rules, you must withdraw the claims.) Thank you so much in advance for your kind cooperation. P.S.: And even assuming, arguendo that your $1M figure is correct, most likely, it indicates total compensation (not just salary alone), including salary, health insurance, retirement, and other benefits. Yirgacheffe Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 If those university presidents used to be teachers themselves, then yes I see nothing wrong with them getting paid more (a little more). They are also responsible for the teachers and the coaches.

I have not problem with what they are paid if the money comes from the revenues generated by the team. If the tuition is being raised to pay for the coach, that is different. I completely agree. These are financial decisions more than anything. BYU Idaho got rid of their inter-collegiate football program several years ago and it was a financial decision. I do agree with Rob that it seems indecent to pay huge salaries to athletes and coaches but one of the things I love the most about our church is how practical our leaders are and if a coach's hard work and talents are bringing in all this money they should benefit from it. Spiritual perfection may be an ideal but it is also recognized that we are not there yet and so we work with what we have. It takes money to run a university and professors' work just does not generally bring in that much money to the organization. Athletic programs sometimes do.
Rob Osborn Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 . Do you think university presidents should get paid more then teachers?I am for building Zion where there are no rich or poor and all share equal alike and have all things in common and all work hard in Zion. That means that if everyone is doing their job correctly, all get paid basically the same. 1

If we cant do that and instead pay competetive pay for that job then we should ditch the sports programs because otherwise it shows that at the top of our program is not God but Football and it only shows we worship football as our god.

Rob Osborn Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Then why aren't you complaining that you make more than McDonald workers?I dont make that much money in my profession and I work hard at what I do. The difference between me and a McDonalds worker is maybe 8,000 dollars a year. I honestly wish we would raise the minimum wage. My wife works at Walmart part time, makes minimum wage and it disgusts me that they do not treat their employees better. Its all about corporate greed.
