Affect Of Reading The Book Of Mormon On Support Of Same-Sex Marriage

I have been interested in this question for quite some time.  Does reading the Book of Mormon affect whether a person supports same-sex marriage?  

 

I will state up front that I believe there is a link between these two things- reading the Book of Mormon and not supporting same-sex marriage.  I ask for your honesty in this poll.

 

Update- sorry.  I changed the poll because I realized that I could not capture any correlation or lack thereof between reading the Book of Mormon and support of same-sex marriage.  Should have seen that before.  Sorry.

An anecdote that seems to be somewhat related:

 

As a district leader on my mission, I interviewed a man for baptism who confessed to me that he had actively engaged in homosexual behaviour for 12 years. Then one morning a set of Elders had knocked on his door and left him with a Book of Mormon. Those missionaries never returned, and it took nearly a year before future missionaries, reviewing records in their area book, decided to check back on this man. During the intervening time, he'd read the entire Book of Mormon many times over. He said it was the most remarkable book he'd ever read, that in a way he simply could not explain, as he had read it, he had been empowered to see clearly his pathway (very much not a conscious choice) into his previous sexual identity, and this awareness had allowed him to recognise the agency he still possessed. When I interviewed him, he had been chaste for 10 months and no longer identified as homosexual.

I marked the first option. However, I just started re-reading the BOM in the last couple of weeks. For the last year or so before that I was reading the D&C and the New Testament.

Even while not daily reading the BOM my views on SSM remain the same as they do today though. I don't think it is daily reading of the BOM that causes my beliefs about SSM.

The lower options do not work - you get an error when choosing them.

 

I am neutral and while I do read scripture daily I currently am on the Bible so I only read the BoM when needed for classes at Church. once a week or so.

My vote was: I am neutral on same-sex marriage and I read the Book of Mormon 2-4 times weekly

 

Personally, I'm not gay so same-sex marriage doesn't effect me, so I have no opinion on the subject beyond that I don't see the point of it. Same-sex marriage is not eternally binding, but if this becomes an issue then my opinion might change.

 

I don't see the link between the two either, seeing as many people opposed to same-sex marriage are of different faiths than LDS, and have never read the Book of Mormon.

My vote wasn't accepted, but I support SSM and whether or not I read the BoM does not seem to affect my feelings about it. I have supported SSM for several years, some of that time I rarely if ever read the BoM and sometimes I read it often - perhaps even hours at a time day after day.

I realize this wasn't the point of the poll, but daily scripture reading and personal prayer keep us in tune with the mind and will of the Lord.  Except, apparently, for Rockpond :). What daily immersion in the scriptures and personal prayer might seem to aid in is the case of a young person who is going through a period of confusion as to their sexuality.  The world tells them that if they have SSA attractions, they are powerless to resist and need to go with the flow.  If they are in tune with the spirit, it will help them be...less confused. 

I realize that there are those who will choose a different path in any case, but a lot of what I see out there is that a certain percentage of gays were recruited into that life.

So if someone has SSA they are "confused"? If they have the spirit they won't be gay? 

People are gay because they are recruited into it?

I understand there are people with a predisposition to SSA.  But the "gay spectrum" has those on one end and people with an occasional SSA impulse on the other. And yes, a lot of teenagers who are on the left of that spectrum can get confused by conflicting feelings and the messages they get from popular culture.  If staying close to the spirit can help them get through a difficult time, I would think that we should be all for it.  

And anyone can see that a certain percentage-though certainly not a majority-of youth who end up with SSA are recruited into the gay life by predators.  I'm not talking about men raping boys, but older teens who ingratiate themselves with a younger person in order to lure him in.  If you don't see that going on around you, well, you just don't want to see it.  And the "All gays are born gay" crowd doesn't want you to see it either.

Wow. That's all I can say. I'm not about to personally attack you because that's not what I do, but you have some serious learning to do. And your comments are out of line with current church teachings.

Our culture is placing more and more influence on being gay and accepting it as some kind of acceptable natural behavior. I am not speaking of SSA, I am speaking of practicing homosexuals. Now days we see all kinds of perversions with men dressing like women, women dressing like men, sex change operations, gay bars and clubs, gender confusion, etc. Its a product of an immoral society!

What about - I oppose same sex marriage and I rarely if ever read the Book of Mormon?
