Dear Evangelical Friends: Can A Mormon Be A Christian?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

When the term merit us applied to eternal life as it is by a Mormon so-called apostle it is a righteousness based on law not grace. Grace is how eternal life is apprehended based on the promise of God.

Obedience to God is a given

The LDS believe in Grace, and you are bearing false witness. AGAIN

The prophet Joseph Smith taught ‘Therefore ye are justified of faith and works, through grace...’ (see JST Romans 4:16). The Book of Mormon teaches ‘For we labor diligently to write to persuade our children, and also our brethren to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace we are saved after all we can do’ (2 Nephi 25:23). The Book of Mormon adds ‘all that we could do [was to] repent of all our sins’ (Alma 24:11). A Book of Mormon prophet named Lehi taught, ‘There is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah’ (2 Nephi 2:8).

Obedience is not a given. It is what we do that makes all the difference.

A question:

Do you believe because obedience is "God given" that saved men and women are virtual puppets of God and that they have no real freedom of choice to decide when and where they will bring forth God given works?

teddyware remember that coolrok7 is a Lutheran Protestant christian - pre destination [ At least it is with many a lutheran I have spoken to in the past]. He confuses us using O.T Law verses the Law of Christ in our Hearts/Minds. And True Grace [charis - unmerited Favor along with 49 ther definitional meanings in the anchient world] is obtained by True Faith [ pistis = Allegience,Commitment/Confidence/Devotion/Discipleship/Faithfulness/Fidelity/Loyalty/Obedience/Trust [Along with approx 15 othet meanings in the anchient world to The Person of Christ Jesus and his Awesome Sacrifice for us which is how True Eternal life is apprehended. Why does he not EVER quote 2 Nephi 2:4 -10 ?.

Grace is anything God gives that we don't deserve.

It doesn't stop God requiring obedience to one of his laws.  Even Christ obeyed God's laws:  Why was he baptized?  To fulfill all righteousness.

Seriously, if our obedience to God's laws means absolutely nothing  to anything why did he bother giving us them in the first place?  It is completely illogical.

Anakin7, if you would read what I've posted in numerous threads I've already covered this before with the church's teaching on the matter of salvation/exaltation where the terms are explained (twisted) in their literature.

I'm not bearing false witness as your church does of mine.

Ah but coolrok7 if you would read what I have posted in my links It shows that what we teach concerning True Salvation/Exhaltation is Chrisrian and Biblical not twisted. Lutheranism , a part of the Protestant [Protest] of Catholicism is a form/model of chritianity but not in it's fullness. Many problems within its house [Lutheranis] as seem by many within Catholicism/Orthodoxy [7 families] and within non LDS Christian Protestantism itself. You need True Grace Accepted/Accessed/Activated by True Faith coolrok7. May True Grace Be With You.

Be worthy of Jesus Christ .

I've read a lot of it but I don't agree with some of the arguments. By your words you will be justified/condemned (Matthew 12:36-37).

Thank you coolrok you may disagree but they are scripture. One must Stay in True Grace -Walk = pistis = True Faith In The Light = True Grace] so that Jesus Christ Blood Cleanses us From all sin 1 John 1:7. No OSAS.

Coolrok7 we Access His [Jesus Christ] True Grace by Faith [pistis = Allegience/Commitment/Confidence/Devotion/Discipleship/Faithfulness/Fidelity/Loyalty/Obedience/Trust - Romans 5:2 as was Lived by Paul. We have to do something to Obtain and Keep True Grace [charis] and that is done by True Faith -[pistis] no OSAS.

That is a natural part of our sanctification if one truly has faith in Jesus (the Biblical one).

Posted (edited)

It boils down to how specific doctrines are interpreted in their historical context. Joseph Smith is some almost 2000 years late on the scene wherein he twists/rewrites Scripture.

Martin Luther did not rewrite Scripture. My point is to use Biblical Scripture to state my beliefs concerning Jesus and my relationship to Him.

Luther is a human in a particular point in history. I believe he was correct in his repudiation against the selling of indulgences of the Roman Catholicism of his day.

I've never said to believe everything he ever said, only what is Biblically justifiable.

If the process of sanctification happens so naturally, why is it that the New Testament is filled with so many solemn exhortations for the believers to progress and move forward in the righteousness of Christ? It seems to me that if the process of sanctification is so natural that there would be no need for all those exhortations to become more and more holy. And if the process is so natural, why is it that in Revelation 3 Christ solemnly testifies that it is only the believers in Christ who overcome the world who will be granted the right to sit on the throne of His eternal power? If the process is so natural, no exhortations to move forward in the righteousness of Christ would be necessary. And it is for this very reason that you will have very little, if any, success on this board persuading the Latter-day Saints to believe in your effortless road to obtaining "the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."

Also, I'm still waiting for you to answer the question I asked you in post # 3203.

Martin Luther rewrote the Bible into German, approved of polygamy, called the Epistle of James a gospel of straw. Hated Jews writing that Jewish synagogues and homes should be destroyed, their money confiscated, and liberty curtailed. Said farts will get rid of the devils. Advanced the idea that all Christians hold the Priesthood. Used faith alone as salvation.

I am a master exorcist then.  I let out a nasty devil this morning! No wonder my friends call me legion...they just keep coming. (rim shot)

He translated the Bible into the German so the German people of his day could read Scripture as he exhorted them to read it.

Most people in America don't read Greek I don't think so we read English translations that are available.

Your imputation is that Joseph Smith was alone in rewriting the Bible. He was not. Your own religion teaches that Martin Luther did it into German from the Vulgate Latin. Which is itself a translation from earlier texts. Most people in America don't read German either but a French modified version of Anglo-Saxon.

I believe Joseph had help in being deceived by his own thinking coupled with the wrong spiritual influence fom his occultic practices.

3223 posts...  are we saved yet?

How about this...  is there anything in LDS doctrines that precludes us from being saved by the grace of Christ.  We have already accepted Christ as our Savior and Redeemer.

KevinG we have another/ wrong Jesus and another/wrong gospel that coolrok7 is presenting to us as he consistantly is hammering/pounding away trying to get us to believe in his antinomianism/gnostic form/model of the gospel.
