Upcoming Conference

I am excited about the upcoming conference. I am curious as to what everyone thinks will be in the content of this one.

As an aside, I have never done a lot of pre-conference research into the upcoming conference, is there a listing of who has been asked to speak that is available? What information is available and where is it available?

it's a mostly a given that all the Twelve and First presidency speak at the conference unless they can't due to sickness or something else, other then that who knows! Though in April they due new callings and possibly a few releases and the audit and statistical report stuff. I suspect due to the increase of missions they'll call a whole bunch of new General Authorities

Another quorum of 70, maybe, sometime soon? We need people to preside over all the missionaries and they all work for free! The more the merrier.

How about a Church Statistical report, announcements of new Temples and GAs, a sustaining vote, and then a sermon by the President of the Church and the President of the Quorum of the Twelve, and perhaps the Presiding Bishop? It could all be done in a single two hour session and give everyone more time to spend with their families.

The only excuse for ten hours of sermons is that the Saints are too lazy to take responsibility for their own spirituality.

I sometimes skip the Saturday afternoon session if it's a nice day outside, intending to read it when it comes out in the Ensign. I have a lot of property to take care of and since I work long hours during the week the Saturday is usually the only time I have to get lots of things done.

The morning sessions are at an easy time to watch while we're all eating brunch and sitting together as a family, before we go about our day. And I like to watch the Sunday afternoon session because I know it will be another 6 months before I'll be able to experience General Conference again, live, over my television.

I watch conference with my family, conference time is family time! Love that you can stay at home and watch it in PJ's, some good snack food, good times.

Man, you missed all the fun, Dude! In the "old" days, Conference used to start on, like, Thursday (I think), and there used to be, in addition to a General Relief Society and General Priesthood meetings and three general sessions, sessions for most of the auxiliaries, as well (Sunday School, Young Men, Young Women, Stake Missions, et cetera). The "streamlining" you're calling for has already started ... it may take awhile, but you can take comfort in the fact that it's headed in the right direction!

I would love to see conference occur more often, perhaps quarterly or monthly. Instead of 10 hours they could just do one or two sessions each conference. As it is I don't think most members watch all four or five sessions; its just too much for many. If it were spread it out we would get to hear our leaders speak more often and hopefully get more out of it. I mean let's be honest, would you rather hear a random member regurgitate a conference talk or hear it from the horses mouth so to speak?

I would like to cut out the hymns and put in another speaker or shorten each session. While I like the music generally I find sitting and listening to music and doing nothing incredibly boring. Music is good as a backdrop. It is tedious to focus on. I am probably in the minority though.

I usually make all five sessions of Conference. Saturday I do light cleaning while I listen to the first two sessions. Priesthood, go to the building. Sunday I usually go visit my parents and eat brunch and have an enjoyable time.

Since I am basically lazy, I love an excuse to just sit. So I enjoy GC. I can't justify that much TV on any other weekend. But I do need to keep my hands busy with a crocheting project or something similar, otherwise I get restless or sleepy. Best place to watch GC? At home! We've attended it in SL only a few times, and it's definitely worth the experience, but I get more out of it at home.

We have Prophets and Apostles and we only get to hear some for 20 hours a year. I would think we would want more.

Given the amount of coverage in the news, it is possible that a woman will pray in GC this time. I don't think there's any convincing rationale for not having a woman pray, so I don't doubt it. I'm half hoping that it won't happen though, given the pressure exerted to try to make it happen I think it will appear as the Church caving to pressure and will only have a slight positive impact, if any.

I've been thinking about the comments regarding length of Conference.

When Christ Himself was on the Earth people flocked to Him and wished to hear him speak constantly. It's stated that whether from Him or the mouth of His servants it is the same (D&C 1:38). Shouldn't we want to hear His words through His servants the same as we would if He were speaking? That's my feeling I have when I listen to the Prophet and Apostles, I just don't want it to end.

I was there as well for conference and let me tellya, when they shut off most of the lights it was goodnight all! It was amazing to see so many people sleeping or half asleep!!
