Well, this should provide all the needed motivation he was looking for to stop now.

This paragraph stuck out to me:

“I was drinking alone at my home and I got into my car alone,” he said. “I never got out of my car and I was not going to meet anybody. It was simply a drive of frustration. I couldn’t get to sleep and I made the very poor choice that I would go out and go for a drive.”

Now it's hard to know from context whether or not this question was prompted or not, but he sure seemed to want to emphasize that he was alone.

Going through very difficult, stressful times with a spouse to help if very hard, doing it alone can be hell. Been there, done it, wear the t-shirt.

He's a politician and thinks way ahead, because of the media.

If being alone is what put him over the top, what he was obsessing about, it could be why he focused so much on it in his description. It could be nothing more than that...hopefully.

He obviously wasn't thinking far ahead when he got behind the wheel of a car while drunk.

Wasn't thinking at all by my calculations....

Which leads me to ask if anyone knows if there are good stats out there indicating the ratio of drunk driving to drinking, iow how often a drinker ends up behind the wheel drunk (preferably not including duplicate events by the same person as I would assume that if an individual has done it once, they are more likely to do it again).

True. ;)

Lots depends on the time of day. The later in the day the higher percentage of drunks. Unless you have to be out on the road after 2:00AM(That's when the bars are legally required to close. At least here in California). It is best not to.

3 AM is the most dangerous hour to be on the road IIRC percentagewise (not saying the most crashes, just the most likely to be in a crash), it is the hour when someone is most likely to fall asleep at the wheel (been years since I read that tidbit in Dement's Promise of Sleep so I could be misremembering it...I do know I swore we would never be on the road at that time of night if we could help it). I assume drinking times have something to do with that.

An interesting article about driving drowsy: http://blogs.menshealth.com/health-headlines/night-driving-drunk-driving/2011/02/06

It worked well.

Translated: "I am still alive." ;)

Driving drowsy is a pet issue of mine due to my own sleep disorder and knowing how many who suffer from it have to drive in order to support themselves (there are many stories among my fellow sufferers of catching themselves in microsleeps while driving due to sleep deprivation, but also some prescribed drugs have that occasional side effect), but even more so due to my father-in-law falling asleep at the wheel and rolling their car...he walked away with minor injuries, my mother-in-law was in a coma for six weeks and suffered brain and body damage that resulted in her being confined to a wheelchair more or less the rest of her life as well as reducing her mentally and emotionally to a child. He was generally a very cautious driver, I don't know what happened that time.

People at .11 are doing good if they can think five seconds ahead. You start losing reasoning usually around .06 to .08

That is what would happen to me if I were to but sniff the bottle cap.

Fun fact: If you can somehow sneak mouthwash into your mouth immediately before taking a breathalyzer test you can get a reading so high that you might be able to convince them to take you to an ER because you should be in a coma and/or dead.

Who pays for it.

I have a pretty high tolerance for alcohol. Mostly because at 250LBS it takes more alcohol to get to that .08 than the average person. I also process it more quickly too. But I choose not to drink for other reasons.

I think he may have been one in the past. I haven't ever heard of him before but sad day, hope all the best for him and his family. Is there any penalization for doing something like this? I have no clue

Breaking the Word of Wisdom is not an issue of discipline of any kind. It simply means that an individual is not worthy to attend the temple. I am curious as to why anyone would consider it such a serious offense as to require any type of serious offense. I find members to have the strangest relationship and thoughts regarding the Word of Wisdom. There is no comparison between obedience to the Word of Wisdom and the Law of Chastity or maintaining the sanctity of marriage.

Yeah, people forget that the Word of Wisdom is one of the few commandments that is not permanent. It was given in our day for specific reasons. It could be rescinded tomorrow.

Just drinking alcohol won't get you ex'd, unless you teach others to do so. My big problems with Mr. Crapo are his DUI and bringing the Church into public disrepute. Both of which can get you ex'd.

perhaps because of the dangers of drunk driving.

Though in the past it probably contributed to extensive abuse.

But the public disrepute isn't about one of its members acting less than noble...it is about attacking the Church. When has someone been exed just for not being the kind of member the Church can be proud of?

That is one reason. Drunken donkey riding, though dangerous, is not as dangerous as driving an automobile drunk.

For Drunken donkey riding, it is only fair that both the donkey and the rider be drunk. Then it becomes a version of piggy-back.
