Serving A Mission Question

First, this thread isn't about homosexuality. It isn't even about me, really.

I know that I would love to have kids some day (adoption or A/I). If my child or children were to decide for themselves that they wanted to be members of the LDS church and serve a mission...would the church not allow them to do so because of having same-sex parents?

I highly doubt that would be a problem since it does not restrict missionaries in any way on the basis of parents' behaviour now, does it?

I would hope not. It would seem very shallow. I think it would be awesome if my kids were to decide to be LDS...I may even become prideful if they did.

Last time I read the CHI on the subject of missionaries, I don't recall seeing anything even hinting at this. Why would you think it was any more an issue than having unmarried parents or antimormon parents or polygamous parents?

I agree your life has no impact on their ability to serve assuming they are worthy.

Valentius,

It seems, from the few posts I have read lately, your approach is much different then it was 6 months ago or so. Do you agree? and what do you attribute to that?

Do you mean in the sense that I'm less hostile or what? Please explain.

Interesting question though. Would the church have any restrictions on how a member honors/associates with their actively gay parents? I would assume and hope not.

The church doesn't control families so I hope not as well.

Yes, less hostile. What do you attribute that to and if permitted touch on that a little. I am curious.

It was an internal fight, essentially. The struggle to keep my failing faith had made me angry and bitter. It was honestly nothing that the church or its members had done. When I accepted that I had lost my faith, whether that is good or bad, I decided that I didn't want to be one of "those" atheists who were constantly on the offensive where religion is concerned.

I think that losing my faith has allowed me to be more compassionate toward faith groups and faithful believers. Not because I believe they are deluded but because they have every right to believe and worship as they do. They deserve love and respect from those of us who don't believe just as well as we deserve love and respect from those who do.

I think my dad dying had a little to do with it. I spoke with my mom after he had passed and found out that he had been seriously considering joining the church.

Love, charity and mercy...even in a non-religious sense goes an extremely long way.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Thank you for candidly answering. I wish you the best. I think an important point is that when stuck between belief and unbelief, it is painful, agonizing, and entails a lot of bitterness

you're fine, absolutely nothing to worry about! Send them out! I had a homosexual companion and another mission buddy, who I didn't serve with, his sister was a "dancer" shall we say...

I can't imagine why they would stop your child from serving, that would be asinine.

I know a family where the parents are not married but live together and openly disagree with the word of wisdom. Their whole family comes to church from time to time and are welcomed with open arms. The parents, as I understand it, are in charge of one of the displays for their ward Christmas party. It is all the same to me

I know that many LDS parents really struggle to accept that their child is gay (understandibly), but are often intolerant, and shaming, shamefully so. I have never heard of the reverse scenario of an LDS child raised by gay parents. That would be a very interesting dynamic. I somehow doubt that they would be as intolerant and shaming.

I have heard of an LDS child who's father or mother came-out, so to speak. In that scenario it seems that the child can be just as intolerant and shaming.

As far as serving a mission goes, your parents could be axe murderers and you could still serve.

I don't know why if they are deemed worthy to serve.

Serving a mission is about personal worthiness not parental worthiness.

Good heavens, no! I suppose that the other responses say something similar (I haven't read them yet), but while the Church is concerned (and rightly so) about how a child arrives in the world, once they're here they are here and as long as they are otherwise worthy to serve, I can't imagine anyone questioning their parental composition.

Actually the answer to your question is found here:

"We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's (or anyone else's) transgression."
