bluebell Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 [media=] Why does it seem weird to her parents that there is a Missouri Independence Mission? This was awkward.I don't get what they all were so freaked out about? Did they think Independence Missouri was a mythical place?? 2
Calm Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) They are probably thinking that it means preparation for going back in handcarts.Maybe they think the Extermination order is still in force. Edited November 30, 2012 by calmoriah
Duncan Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I've never witnessed someone opening their mission call and I was unaware of the mass amount of YouTube videos about such an event. This guy made me uncomfortable...couldn't he have been sent to like Cambodia or Indonesia or the Yukon Territory or maybe Siberia? At least with the Yukon Territory, he'll be close to Duncan.ha..............................................................................................ha........................................................................................................................haw 1
Duncan Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I don't get what they all were so freaked out about? Did they think Independence Missouri was a mythical place??One of my fav. comps is from Independence so if anything happens, he says I can stay on his couch! 1
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Why does it seem weird to her parents that there is a Missouri Independence Mission? This was awkward.I have a good friend who served there, I was in Bishopric with him, he is now the Stake President. Back then every missionary got to spend one night in Liberty Jail. They no longer allow this...

I was thinking you and Freedom are much closer to Yukon then I! Something that NEVER cease to amaze me is no matter where you go to Church in Canada, you know someone or know someone who knows someone that you know, I haven't been proven wrong yet, it's just mind blowing to me. It's the second largest country in existence yet the Church is so small tht we all seem to know each other or the same folks 2
queenamanda Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I don't get what they all were so freaked out about? Did they think Independence Missouri was a mythical place??I'm assuming that it was a place of significant meaning to their family? ie they said that it was "unreal" in the slang term. Unreal meaning "unbelievably cool" not unreal as in it doesn't exist. They probably thought it was cool because Missouri is where the city of Zion will be built to prepare for the millenium. I'm just guessing that's what they meant anyway...
blackstrap Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 6 degrees of separation( or Kevin Bacon ) , is almost a mathematical certainty. It is especially so with all the missionaries that have been all around the world ( as a group ). 1
Duncan Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Winnipeg to Whitehorse,Yukon - 2076 milesWinnipeg to Los Angeles,CA - 2073 milesWe do live in a BIG country,Duncan!speaking of here. Sad, but this is a true story, as I heard it from one of the missionaries involved. In 2008 a guy let's say his name was Jones. Was called on a mission here. So prior to his coming his criminal cousin, also named Jones was looking to evade the lawmen. He seriously beat up his cousin so much so he was put in the hospital and somehow went to the MTC posing as Elder Jones (the one hospitalized). He did it in such a way that the cousin didn't know who it was. So this charade only lasted about a couple of months until the FBI with help from the family crossed the border and captured Elder Jones. Also, in oh early 2000's in Regina, a Bishop was interviewing a YSA fella for his Temple Rec. This guy was going through RCMP training at the time. His failed the Temple Rec. interview and pulled a knife on the Bishop, needless to say he was kicked out of the RCMP thing! Sadly a few years later I saw him on TV and he had killed someone in Quebec

Stargazer Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I've never witnessed someone opening their mission call and I was unaware of the mass amount of YouTube videos about such an event. With their skis packed on their cars roofs. This reminded me of this.I'm pretty sure Duncan lives nowhere near the Yukon. 2
Stargazer Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 6 degrees of separation( or Kevin Bacon ) , is almost a mathematical certainty. It is especially so with all the missionaries that have been all around the world ( as a group ).I have a tale of the small world.I served my mission in central Germany in 1972. In my first city my companion and I tracted out this one house and I noted that the house had a bit of an Arabic theme (Arabic characters on the door ringer). The inhabitant was not interested. On we went.9 years later, I am in the US Army stationed in southern German with my new wife, who is a German-born US citizen. One of her sisters happens to live in my first mission city, I find out, and at some point we go visiting. We arrive at my new in-laws house, and guess what house it is? Yep, the house with the Arabic theme. And my new brother--in-law remembers me from way back when.I didn't remember him, but then I contacted quite a few more "not interested" people than he met Mormon missionaries. In case you were wondering, the Arabic / Egyptian theme was because my BiL was a civil engineer who did a lot of contract work in Egypt. Both of them spoke fluent Arabic, and my now-widowed SiL spends part of her winter vacationing in Egypt every year. 2
RobertAC Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I was thinking he was going to be sent to Republic of Congo -- and that there would be a postscript that the kid got a rare case of African tapeworm from swimming in a local pond.
Gillebre Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I don't get what they all were so freaked out about? Did they think Independence Missouri was a mythical place??they were freaked out because her boyfriend/fiance was already serving in that mission. 1

Bob McCue anyone?![media=] What in the world is a "corn bust dance"?! I have never even heard of this song and dance before. Do you participate in this sort of thing?! bluebell Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 they were freaked out because her boyfriend/fiance was already serving in that mission. Is that true? That would make sense. Otherwise, that video doesn't exactly make them sound like the sharpest tools in the shed. I wish they had some kind of an explanation to go with it..... 1
Judd Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I don't get what they all were so freaked out about? Did they think Independence Missouri was a mythical place??I think they had been so moved and persuaded by the intellectual view of the gospel that they regarded the existence of Independence as allegorical. 1

I wish they had some kind of an explanation to go with it.....Another option would be possibly they were from there, like my son getting sent to Utah where he was born on his mission which wasn't a problem since we weren't living there at the time...but did visit almost every summer. Maybe there was a lot of family there and they thought that might be a restriction.
Judd Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I think a boyfriend scenario makes the most sense, especially considering someone says "that's his mission president, isn't it?"
Calm Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Going back and rewatching it explains everyone's reactions, her brother's for laughing about it, hers for looking concerned and one of the off screen people say (I think) "I hope she doesn't see _______".Makes the most sense. I would say mystery solved. So this was from 2009, think they are married or not?

I wonder if she wore that on her mission. Any way, I really don't think being in the same mission is a huge deal. I'd just roll with it. My wife had a friend from her home ward who got called to a mission and then a little later his brother got called to the same place. The parents apparently threw a stink and got the mission changed. Long story short he either got sent home early (can't remember) but came back dating some woman he met there and has left the church. Anyway, just my opinion, but I think sometimes we over think a little much.
