swfarnsworth Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 That book sounds really interesting. I have added it to my Amazon wishlist and will purchase it when they find a cure for ADD. It's not that it's not worth $20 to me, but I don't even have the attention span to concentrate on things I enjoy.

HappyBird Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 It sounds very interesting. Any chance of kindle publication?
Saints Alive Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Since we can't see the back cover online, mind giving us a brief synopsis?
volgadon Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Mike, looks like the long wait was worth it. On my to buy list.

I didn't come up with the title. I agreed to it, however, knowing that sizzle will likely sell. if the sizzle gets this book into more hands than otherwise would be the case, all the better. read it. it will show that the cultural taboo has nothing to do with whether Mormons are Christian.... it will show that the taboo was more of a historical/cultural accident.... and accident based on fear/boundary maintenance. 2
Mike Reed Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 Since we can't see the back cover online, mind giving us a brief synopsis?Mike DeGroote did a great job, although there is much more to my book than what I presented at Sunstone: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705328913/Mormons-and-the-cross.html?pg=all

Mike Reed Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 Kindle may take a while. First pb, then hb (likely a month later, according to my editor), and if there is a significant demand.... a kindal version. Problem for me is that a kindal version would require me to do a lot of extra work (as well as spend a lot of of extra money) renegotiating my photo permission contracts. I have a lot of photos in my book.
Mike Reed Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) what topic did that book discuss? It traces the cultural taboo against the cross, and shows that the aversion against the symbol was a late development in Mormon history, emerging at the grassroots around the turn of the 20th century, and was institutionalized in the 1950s on grounds that it was a "catholic" symbol. Prior to this time many LDS embraced and promoted the symbol of the cross, including Church authorities. Edited October 26, 2012 by Mike Reed

Lamanite Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Mike, I made this comment to a FB post by Seth."Years ago I remember wanting to understand more about the symbol of the cross and by extension the relationship Mormonism had with it. I always put this study to the side. Thankfully, I ran into Mike on MADB and found out he pretty much did all the work for me! Big UP to Mike and congrats."Can't wait to read it.Big UP!Lamanite

Stargazer Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 Mike, I wanted to emphasize something that was brought up by another poster in this thread. KINDLE.There. You might have thought little of this new platform when writing and getting your book ready to publish, but for the future you definitely need to consider ePublishing from the moment you start putting words to word processor. The time is coming, if it hasnt already arrived, where eBook sales will exceed paper book sales. Read this. I don't have a Kindle, yet, but I do have the Kindle app on my Windows Phone. I have bought about eight books in the last month, none of them made of paper. If your book had come out in Kindle format already, i would have bought it immediately. As it is, I am not sure when I will buy it. I can carry that Windows Phone everywhere, but I cannot carry full-sized books everywhere. In fact, while I have bought a few paper books over the past few months (including another one written by a frequent poster here), I have not been able to read them all the way through yet. It is getting too easy to pull out my Windows Phone to read.Just saying. Next time, get those releases for eBook publishing as well.

I expect to be informed by this book which you have written on the way in which this "cultural taboo" came into existence -- perhaps along with lack of the sign of the fish, etc. Seems to me now that people would not be upset but only mildly interested if they saw you wearing a cross on your lapel at Church. Same for the fact that we have well-known hymns in our Hymnal written by Roman Catholics and Protestants.Could this be the day of ecumenical Mormons? Edited October 27, 2012 by Robert F. Smith

It was widely read and provoked a lot of 'energetic' discussion. If you haven't read any of it as yet, think you'll find it quite interesting.I'm wondering if your new book touches on the incontrovertable truth that, in spite of the fact our meeting houses are not adorned with crosses or crucifixes, the LDS Church, by far, places more symbolic significance and salvative importance on the symbolism of Christ's crucifixion than does any other Christian Church? It always perplexes and utterly mystifies me when I hear seasoned LDS people -- who should know better -- earnestly explain why (supposedly) the Church places little importance on the symbolism of the cucifixion of Christ, and it makes me wonder if they are spiritually "asleep" and otherwise totally oblivious while they are engaged in tending to sacred things. Saying the symbolism of the cross and crucifixion of Christ is not important the Latter Day Saints is totally false and perfectly ridiculous. Why? Because the symbolism of The Lord's crucifixion is of overwhelming salvative and symbolic importance to the Restored Church; so much so, that no other church even comes close to placing similar reverence and importance on the same.So this brings me to another question for you: Could it be that in the Lord's mysterious economy, he allowed the symbol of the cross of Christ to fall out of usage and favor with the saints, not because it is of lesser importance to him and his people, but because it is too sacred? All the best, Ted Edited October 27, 2012 by teddyaware 2
