Kids At Temple Dedications-What Happens?

So, news down the pipe indicates that in the Great White North a Temple will be dedicated in two weeks sunday. It is being broadcasted to people who don't live there in three sessions on the sunday. So, my question is what happens to non-recommend holders and kids? Is church basically cancelled for non-recommend holders and are kids invited?

During the Brigham City Temple, church was cancelled. Only children over the age of 12 could attend and they had to have a recommend. For those of us with smaller kids, one of us went to one of the dedications and the other watched the children, and then we switched for another one of the dedications.

The church becomes a temple and you require a recommend to get in. From my experience, only the stake center is used, the other buildings are closed. There are three types of recommends - one to get into the celestial room, one to get into the temple, and one to get into the church. The dedication is broadcast-ed to the church. As stated, children under 12 cannot get it. Adults without a regular recommend can still get this limited use recommend that, of course, is only valid for the one day. Each session has a different ticket so is you show up with a 1st dedication ticket at the 3rd session, you will not be admitted. Often, families with children who are in the temple will be invited at the last minute to go into the celestial room.

You can attend at the stake center, but to get into the temple, you require a special recommend ticket.

Honestly and respectfully, why would you ask this question on an internet board rather than asking your Bishop or some other local authority?

How are we supposed to know what your Stake is recommending?

And why would you believe anything you read here? If I pretended I was Canadian would that help?

The bishop gets enough calls, Duncan was merely saving the bishop from having to answer another phone call. Especially if it was just a matter of curiosity (which I don't know whether it is or not).

With the Brigham City dedication just happening, why not take a little shortcut and ask people who have experienced it.

But as it turns out he doesn't even have to ask, he can check lds.org and see what they say:

True, we're anonymous as regards each other, but hey: I'll take what I can get!

P.S.: For what it's worth, we treated dedication recommends like Tithing Settlement: we put a sign-up sheet on the door for people needing recommends to sign up.

I don't see anything on that site about turning chapels into temporary temples, and needing recommends, besides the fact that that is not a church website. If you need a recommend, you talk to a local leader.

You are quite right, I didn't read far enough along, just until they were talking about the age limit.

I attended the Brigham City dedication in our stake center with our three boys, all over the age of 8, while my wife stayed with our 7-year old daughter. Then, my wife and I attended a later session together while the older children tended the younger ones at home.

It worked out quite well. I didn't mind going twice, and we got to be together as a couple for one of the sessions.

Didn't we do something similar to this but on a national basis for the Nauvoo temple dedication?

I recall the broadcast and tickets and having to have a recommend to attend. I was there a few years ago and that is a wonderful temple!

When I was on my mission there was a Temple dedication a few hundred miles away. Church was cancelled, but we missionaries couldn't go to the dedication, so we were told to go to another Church. We were in the deep south, so we went with an investigator to their mega-church (one of those huge churches with attendence in the many thousands). It was a lot of fun.

One thing they did was at the beginning of the service, when the pastor asked everyone who had been there before to stand up. So almost everyone stood up, leaving the rest of us first-timers sitting. He then asked everyone to introduce themselves to the now easily identifiable visitors. We got hearty welcomes and hand-shakes from every direction. It was very memorable.

visited a ward (church?) but I was not asked for a recommend.

It's for the temple dedication only. Other times you may enter ward buildings without a recommend, and even if you're not LDS.

At many temple dedications, because of limited space in the temple itself, they will have overflow attendance with CCTV in a nearby ward building. This is the only time you would need a temple recommend to enter a regular meeting house.

It has been done nationally in connection with dedications of the Palmyra New York; Winter Quarters Nebraska and Nauvoo Illinois temples. I'm certain it was because of the significance of those three locales in Church history.
