Brenda Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 So let's say your Bishop tells you to go and drown the first 50 dogs you can find. Do you answer with Moses 5:5?How about this? The women are instructed that they can't shave their legs or armpits in order to receive callings. How would they react to that edict?Silly scenerios and "what ifs" are completely pointless here.If you want to grow a beard, mustache, and/or hair out your ears, then do it. No one is stopping you.
Mansquatch Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I have a skin/hair condition that pretty much guarantees that I will never be a leader in the church or a temple worker. If I shave I get cysts on my face in the sensitive areas that stay for months at a time. I used to try to tough it out when leaders would tell me to shave, but I gave up on that. I get plenty of looks from mormons and have even recently gotten a comment from an LDS stranger in an elevator about how I looked threatening to him because I have facial hair. When I have explained my problem to people they are generally very understanding but I do get tired of having to tell people about this gross thing that my face does before they will be OK with my appearance.

Perhaps you should tattoo the explanation on your forehead so you don't need to explain it?

daz2 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 There is no across the board ban on facial hair for Church service missionaries. It probably depends on the assignment. Things will change eventually, although it will probably take another generation.

Things will change eventually, although it will probably take another generation. My guess is that when the Quorum of the Twelve is comprised of men who are all roughly the age Elder Bednar and Elder Andersen are right now, that will be when it happens. Considering the fact that the median age of the Apostles and the First Presidency is currently 78 years old, and that these two Apostles are the only ones under 60, I suspect that within 15 years or so we'll see a younger group of men leading the Church. I'm not saying that the older men are in any way unqualified or unworthy of their callings; I'm just saying that they are of a different generation and reached adulthood at a period of time when wearing a beard signified something different that it does today.

My hubby has a milder case of what you explained. We met on our missions and his skin looked pretty bad from having to shave every day. He's much more comfortable with a beard but he does keep it trimmed pretty short. Still, he gets welts on his neck when he does a close shave there. An electric razor helps a bit but then he has to shave more frequently. I quit caring what people think a long time ago because I know that he's one of the most magnificent human beings on the planet and if someone can't see that simply because of his beard, then I really don't value their opinion and I actually feel sorry for them.
LifeOnaPlate Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 WWI. David O. McKay was a young man in the late 'teens of the XX. The Army had, until WWI, allowed warriors to wear any facial hair they wanted (Generals Custer, Burnsides
Jigglysaint Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 What about handle-bar mustachios? Are they allowed? Cuz if not, I'm screwed...I just bought a years supply of mustache wax.H.That can't be worse than the time we had a missionary named Elder Gay serve in our ward. Yes his name was Elder Gay.
Doctrine 612 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 You're not going to find anything 'more definitive' because your stake president is making this 'policy' up.I agree When anyone tells another how to live out side the mother and father under 18 years of age relationship i say Amen to that person and tell them to go get a life. We can do what we want how we want, and If i want to grow a beard then i will if not then i dont. we have a Stake President here that thinks of him self as some kind of prophet, but when he sees me he knows i see thru his bull $%!^.
nicolasconnault Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I feel I need to bump this very interesting thread. Some research (also here) suggests that having a beard can be harmful to health.Note that this post is not particularly serious. Here, I'll even throw in a smiley do dispel misunderstandings:

Bill “Papa” Lee Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 From what I understand, Jewish men were required to sport facial hair once they were married and were forbidden to shave their heads. I believe this abhorrance to shaving is (was) a remnant of their hatred of the Egyptians. IMHO, its nothing more or less than cultural preference. Some sects do this to some degree
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 You got Nazarite OK (Nazirite is more commonly used), it's Samson and covenant that were slightly off How? His mother was commanded that no razor should ever touch his head. The Bible Dictionary used to define this sect. Don't have mine right now so I am not sure if still there.

frankenstein Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 just tonight, I was told I was a bad parent because I do not wear a white shirt to Church, the exact words were "I wish I could tell our son 'just do what your dad does' but I can't."as for facial hair, I make it a point to always be clean shaven when I am around the young men, which is Sundays and Wednesday night.
Hamba Tuhan Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Your wife said this??? Maybe you should encourage her to find that policy in the Church handbook?
frankenstein Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Your wife said this??? Maybe you should encourage her to find that policy in the Church handbook?I did.
Hamba Tuhan Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I did.Has she realised yet that she's going to strike out?We have a 'false traditions of the fathers' man in our ward, and one day I caught him berating one of my priests for having facial hair. He claimed there was a Church policy against it. I interrupted and asked him where one could find said policy. He said it was in the handbook. I told him that, if he could find it, I'd kiss him on the lips. He's never brought it up again.

I guess the question is how important not wearing a white shirt is to you. Is it more important than making your wife happy for that one item? What would she say if you stated, "You know the white shirt thing bothers me, but it isn't nearly as important as making you happy. I will do this thing for you, but maybe not always" What would her reaction be to that? I know the first time I did something like that and started paying more attention to making my wife happy, she nearly had a heart attack. I have since learned that most of what we hold dear to is not nearly as important understanding the importance of our wives in our lives. The policy is not nearly as important as your wife is. I think in truth it may change over the decades. But its more about family at that point and less about policy.

Bernard Gui Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 My son Teodoro Gui was sitting in a high council meeting when this question came up.One of the HC members had a colored shirt on and was called on it. When he asked ifthere was an official policy on white shirts, the SP help up his hands and swept them around thepictures of the General Authorities lining the walls of the room and said, "These are myofficial policies on this issue." Interesting answer, but was it kosher?Bernard
