I’m not sure how the ladies at the “at last she said it” podcast remain not only members but in good standing.   They have inspired a lot of exits.

No, Radio Free Mormon. He was a poster here for years and now I can't fully remember his avatar name. I think it starts with a C and then I forget the spelling.

Where I live the discussion has been more about how this makes Utah look bad, not the church.   Why does so much weird stuff originate along the Wasatch Front?  It's unfortunate since I know there are many sane people that live there.

Well, I think the LDS that move to Utah, might disagree that we are sane sometimes. We are in a bubble sometimes.

All the state’s football fans….ran into some UoU fans one day (how did I know…besides waving school flags and hanging out the truck’s windows and screaming Utah!, they were painted red).  Told my husband best to maintain a distance and was confirmed correct by their behaviour at the next intersection.  Intentionally dangerous driving.

I just watched an interesting video recording of a woman misbehaving in a video conference with a judge about a child custody dispute:

It's the first part of the video, and lasts about 5 1/2 minutes.

She swears at judge, flips him off, and so on.  The judge, meanwhile, mostly tries to keep going rather than directly address her misconduct.  However, this only emboldens her, so she becomes even more obnoxious, to the point where the judge finally has to start issuing fines for each time she misbehaves.  By the end of the call she's racked up $400 in fines.  And she eventually gave up child custody anyway.

Things are playing out the same way with Nemo.  He's been behaving obnoxiously against the Church for quite a while.  And the local leaders, like the above judge, seem to have been ignoring or accommodating him for quite a while.  However, this can only go on for so long.  So he has apparently lost his membership, which he clearly doesn't value anyway - pretty much like the woman above and her indifference to child custody.

I have expressed this sentiment many times:

Generally and broadly and predominantly, I think the answer is "No."  I think these people, talented though they may be, engaged in conduct that made continued membership in the Church impossible.

I am saddened by their departures.  I am also saddened at the departures of people who leave the Church for other reasons.  We each of us have value and merit in the eyes of God.

I don't want these people to leave the Church. I want them in it. I want everyone in it. But we are a community of faith. We cohere around faith. When we disregard apostasy we weaken our community.

Of course, I am saddened when a person like John Dehlin only regresses further into a state of rebellion and apostasy.  But that's on him.  We cannot disregard the mandate of God out of fear that a person in rebellion will be angered by the Church's obedience to that mandate.

I wish Nemo well.  I hope he finds a way to define himself in some way better than "Ex-Mormon."  Boy, that identity doesn't seem to make anyone happy.
