Only sisters sustain for a RS calling?

Today they announced a sister becoming a RS teacher.  They asked "only sisters" to do the sustaining.  Is this a new thing?

I thought those sustainings were now done in RS?

RS presidency is sustained in sacrament meeting by the congregation, all other RS callings are taken care of in that meeting.  Same is true with EQ callings.

Since we had Sunday School and not RS today is that why they might have asked for only the sisters to sustain?

Could be, but it seems kind of awkward and also seems like it’s something that could be done next week (seems that way to me anyway).

It did seem a little awkward.  I noticed that some men didn't hear or catch it when it was done.  They did release one teacher so I'm wondering if the new teacher will be teaching next week and maybe they wanted to put her in before then?  I know - best to ask them, but I totally forgot when the meeting was over.

No.  I'm not sure from what the teacher said if she forgot or meant to say a couple of things before having the prayer.  We had it about 5 minutes into the lesson.

This was quite common when we still had separate Elders Quorum and High Priest Groups. Some of these stainings for EQ were done in the combined meeting where Elders were only to sustain and so on with high priest callings, deacons, teachers, priests quorums callings etc.  So nothing in usual at all in a mixed meeting.

In my wards they never did that - just said they were letting everyone know and had sustained in the appropriate priesthood meeting the week before.

I was talking of the combined priesthood opening exercises meeting, where the young men used to meet with the older men before splitting up for classes and when Elders and High Priests were still separate and ward High Priests were not merged into one Quorum with the Elders as they are now.

I don't recall a time when the young women met with the RS sisters for opening exercises before splitting of to their classes and I doubt there were ever other groupings within the RS so the potential for sisters to have these partial sustainings would have been very limited in the past.

In priesthood meeting in the past this type of partial sustaining in a mixed group was not uncommon and may still occur in some ward conferences but is far less frequent due to the new structures of the two hour schedule.

I've never attended one of those as I'm a woman so still new to me.  My husband seemed to think this was different as well, but we didn't discuss it so I will try to ask him in the morning.

My wife and I have never voted to sustain anyone since we are not members. Where we are unsure is whether we should raise our hands to thank those who have served, especially when they have been a blessing to us? What we have decided is that we should never raise our hands for either, but go to the person privately later to thank them for their service and for being a blessing to us. What think ye?

I think there is no problem in raising your hand to thank them, but I also find it incredibly sweet that you would thank them later.

For the past few months (couple of years?) this kind of thing has been done in RS in our ward, so only the RS sisters have been asked to sustain obviously.  I believe it operates the same in EQ with teachers or other "EQ callings".

I've been in lots of RS meetings where the YW came in for opening exercises. It was typically done at the discretion of the RS and YW presidencies and hardly ever every Sunday (before when those groups met every sunday).

Same here.  The thank you raising of hands is a only convenient way of showing gratitude as far as I am aware and not an official procedure.  But doing it personally is going to be more meaningful for an individual to hear, imo.
