I don't tiktok and wasn't aware of this group. But, it apparently had it's following. The group seems to have imploded as a consequence of "soft swinging". That such a group would apply Mormon to their label is somewhat ... disappointing.

Agreed.  I'm not sure if they apply the label themselves or if others have labeled them as mormon, but either way, it's easy to see that these people are not mormon in beliefs or practices.  Maybe they were baptized as kids or something, but the affiliation is in name only at this point.

After reading the article, I don't see where the MomTok group had anything to do with swinging. They seemed to react strongly about one of their members being into it.

Yes, you're right, but what makes it a bigger thing is that some are LDS and that just doesn't sit well. None of it sits well at all.

The article throws that term out there as if it were established but not well known. In those cases, helpful reporting spells it out in the first paragraph.

Instead, it was dangled all throughout without any explanation. At the end we get some inferences at what it could mean.

I am not sure why it makes it bigger than if they were Catholic or Baptist or any faith or group that teaches marital fidelity.

It's basically some members did things that (strongly) run counter to their faith. To me, that seems like every day in every ward. Bishops have to deal with gnarly stuff.

If there's something novel here, I'm missing it.

It's just a shock for me. It's because the articles I've read is that it's in my hometown and in my husband's hometown. But the TikTok is more blatantly out there where it was more underground.

People say it's a thing but I'm not sure how much of a thing it actually is among people who claim to be believing and active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The one article I read about read a lot like gossip and "I heard...." stuff.

But I don't doubt that there are couples in Utah doing this stuff, and destroying their lives in the process.  I just don't think that it's an epidemic among church members.

They probably applied the title to be deliberately scandalous and sensationalist. I would say that people who engage in this kind of stuff are areligious, or deeply hypocritical.
