Duncan Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 For next Conference President Nelson invited (I despise the word "Challenge"-sounds like a fight) to study the Restoration and I was wondering what books or materials you'll be studying? I 've selected and remains to be seen if I actually read through all of this Doctrine and Covenants Words of Joseph Smith Diaries of Joseph Smith Teachings of Joseph Smith (those Teachings of the Prophets series) various articles (the Church used to have these "Joseph Smith Memorial Sermons" So, i've gotten into some of those) I figure I want to know more than I do and refresh my memory about stuff, so we'll see what happens. What are your study plans? 2

Fielding Smith than the teachings of the prophets series. But you've probably got most of that material covered in the Words of Joseph Smith. 1
InCognitus Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I'm focusing on the events leading up to the first vision, and the things that were restored in the 1820 to 1829 time period (a lot of stuff), since the first vision kicked off a decade of visions and an outpouring of information. I presume we will have a similar invitation in 2030 at the 200th anniversary of the church, so I want to mentally try to put myself in the same place and time as the events when they unfolded originally. One thing I am doing is reading or listening to Saints (I listened to about half of the first Saints book in my car on my last trip to Utah, and that was helpful). About seven years ago I was asked to give a talk in sacrament meeting on the topic, "How the establishment of the United States was essential to the Restoration of the Gospel". Because of my calling at the time, I knew about that assignment way in advance of the day when the talk was to be given. I found out about it in March and the talk was to be given in July, and so I had almost four months to prepare that talk! (I wish that was always the case). But it was awesome, because it gave me an opportunity to read a few books and listen to a number of talks that got me thinking about the great apostasy and all of the things through history that had to line up just right so that an environment could be prepared for the restoration of the gospel to take a solid hold. It's like an elaborate football play, with every player on the team doing a specific job, and then the long pass is thrown to Joseph Smith in the end zone for the touch down. I think about some of those things now as we prepare for the bicentennial of the first vision. There is so much preparation that went on before the time when the heavens were opened again. Of course that is a very broad topic, but I don't think a detailed study is required to gain an appreciation of what went on before the first vision to make the restoration possible. 2

Some of the content in the Joseph Smith Papers (hard copy or website) would be better than the older sources you give here. But for a more concise summary of teachings, I’d say one can’t go wrong in reviewing some installments in the Teachings of Presidents of the Church series. 1

And to acknowledge the buildup provided by the European Renaissance, Greek Civilization, jurisprudence of Roman Empire and the courageous venture of Cristoforo Colombo, among many others. 1

What are your study plans? I've already read and studied the History of the Church written by Joseph Smith and his scribes, twice, so I've already done what he is advising we do. When prophets give general counsel like that I figure they're talking to people who may have never heard about or considered doing what they are advising, so if we've already done it we don't really need to do it again. Refreshing our memory every once in a while is a good thing to do, though, if we tend to forget what we have already done, or studied. 1

What are your study plans? Good starts, the D&C gives a panoramic view o the “Restoration”, from his beginning, to his end, and then on to the teaching of the Presidents of the Church. 2
