Have you guys gotten your new come follow me manuals? I’ve been looking through it and it’s pretty cool. I’m excited for the new format next year and not because it’s two hours.

how do you guys plan to use the manual to bless your life and family?

Introduced today in my ward.

I want to see how it will play out.

I'm kind of excited as well!  I think change can be helpful.  I know that some people and families will not do it and will suffer for that, but I'm kind of excited about the responsibility for gospel learning to rest more solidly with me and mine.  It feels like growing up.

In my ward, they will be given out next week. We have been discussing the program for the last 3 or 4 EQ meetings. I think next week we will have a combined 3rd hour meeting to discuss.

We had the training today and another next week for those that missed this one. It ties nicely with the primary manuals. I'm excited!

Ours are given out last week.  They are also in the gospel library app where it includes videos.

I strongly suspect this will prove to be one more brass serpent for modern Israel. I fully expect many more.

Giving ours out at 5th Sunday in the last third hour bloc. I am assigned to talk about the home based study and how to make it work. Any suggestions?

I was teaching from Elder Cook's conference talk today. I barely said a word. We talked about what we wanted to get out of it. how we can enthusiastically embracing the program. How it can help us prepare for the second coming etc.

The bulk of what I have so far is do not be afraid to experiment and figure out what works for your family. If something does not work try something else.

Also part of it. Do not spend time thinking about if you are going to do it. Focus on how. If you are not sure how just jump in and improvise.

I'm a bit nervous. It seems clear the idea is to have FHE lessons on Sunday after Church and reteach the lesson. As a senior primary teacher though having only 20 minutes to teach the lesson is going to be pretty hard. Also I'm worried since our Stake has staggered the hours so that the next ward is coming into the church right as primary is switching. Sounds like pandemonium guaranteed.

That said, the lessons are more just very, very vague outlines with a few ideas. Lots of room for teachers to do what they want. Of course the traditional problem is that while that's great for many teachers, many people need structure and will really struggle with this.

BTW - the manuals have been in the Gospel Library app for some time now.

Yep. I have found repeatedly that revelation is most likely to come when we're already on the move, doing something, getting our feet wet. People who wait for God to speak before taking action mostly just hear silence.

The Spirit is expert at guiding a moving object.

I think you need to check your manual again. The idea is to study the material during the week before the corresponding lesson is given at church. This could certainly be in a family home evening, but it needn't be. And if it's in a FHE, it could be on Sunday or any other day that works for you.

The Sunday school teachers are going to struggle to teach the small outline.   Not enough information to teach for 50 minutes.

We struggle to get through a portion of a Sunday school lesson now as it is. The more people who are eager to share their personal experiences, the quicker the lesson goes.

Reminds me of the old Family Home Evening manuals we used to use. I thought they were great and missed them. Glad to see them back. Live long enough and things come around again. Sister Gui and I plan to use them to replace the hour lost from the block on Sunday.

I agree that it seems like the church is lightly pushing for FHE lessons on Sunday nights and then activities still on Monday nights (though individuals and families can do what works best for them), not to re-teach the lesson they just had though but to teach the lesson that is coming up the next Sunday.  That way when everyone goes to church (primary, youth, and adults) they have already been taught the lesson and studied it so that they can contribute to the lesson discussion.

This is what Elder Cook taught in General Conference:

Quote

"This Sunday schedule allows more time for a home evening and to study the gospel at home on Sunday or at other times as individuals and families may choose. A family activity night could be held on Monday or at other times. To this end, leaders should continue to keep Monday evenings free from Church meetings and activities. However, time spent in home evening, gospel study, and activities for individuals and families may be scheduled according to their individual circumstances.

To help members prepare for the Sabbath, some wards already send an informative email, text, or social media message midweek. In view of this adjustment, we strongly recommend this type of communication. These invitations will remind the members of the Sunday meeting schedule for that week, including the upcoming class lesson topic, and support continuing gospel conversation at home."

In the new program every member there should be able to teach the lesson so that should help.

Then again when I teach I tend to just read the chapters and pick out ideas and usually get more then I anticipate being able to use and go from there. Then hope I have been a good boy this week and the Spirit will fill in the gaps and occasionally chuck my whole lesson plan and give me something better.

I've heard it both ways, but I'm also in Primary so have missed most of the training lessons they've given 3rd hour on the topic. The quote you gave didn't seem to clearly state they wanted us a week ahead of schedule.

Have they clarified elsewhere whether they want you a week ahead or following that day's lesson? It gets tricky of course since with holidays and so forth individual classes get out of sync with others. For instance in my primary class we taught lesson 44 last week. But I know several primary classes are on lesson 43 or even 42.

Yes, but that's no different from what we've always been doing. Do the reading before class. The question I'm asking is more about FHE.

I think there's more than enough information but it'll be on the teacher to figure out how to teach it. I could go off for 50 minutes easily given the lessons. But I think you're right that many teachers will struggle unless more is laid out. That's aggravated by often the people who are the best teachers not being called to Gospel Doctrine. However given the changes in PH/RS that may be less of an issue now. Again I've missed a lot due to being in primary, but it's not even quite clear to me if there will be regular teachers. I know in our PH different people teach each week.

I think families can do it however they want (the preface to the study guide says that no one should feel bound by the schedule in the book) but I know in our ward the focus is on making sure that families know what the lesson is going to be on for the coming Sunday so that they can come having already studied the material.

Under "how does this resource relate to what's happening at church" section, the study guide says "to support your efforts to learn and live the gospel at home, your teachers will give you opportunities to share your experiences, thoughts, and questions about the scripture passages that you have been studying during the week."  That certainly makes it sound like the plan is for members to have come to church having already engaged in the lesson topic during the week.

You study it a week ahead. You skip lessons on Sunday to stay on track if you miss a week due to stake conference or whatever.

Two weeks ahead.  Gospel study is only fortnightly. And,  if your stake conference falls on the "wrong" week, you'll go 5 weeks between Sunday school classes as our stake schedule is at one point.

I believe my ward will get our manuals on 29th December.   There has been very little discussion or training though there was finally some teacher training last week at the stake. I think it will take quite some time in my area to work, if at all tbh, (based on experience with the youth come follow me programme and our GD teachers) which is a shame because I think it could work very well. Unfortunately, I will be a student,  I got released as Sunday school teacher last week!   I was looking forward to teaching the new manual too!

Yeah, sorry, I misspoke.
