What's Up With the Forum?

What's up with the forum? It's been going down fairly regularly losing posts. I've lost enough posts the past week that I almost don't want to write until I have some confidence what's going on. I don't mind installations of software or the like but it'd be nice to have some warning other than just hitting "save" and then lose your post with no way to recover.

Not only that but when the problem happens my post gets trapped in the editor with no way to delete it or post it. Effectively I'm cut off from the thread (as happened in the "Is Satan Anachronistic" thread) Again I know the vagaries of running software you didn't write and keeping working. But a little bit of feedback would be nice.

That is weird.  Makes sense you think it is the site.  I have noticed in the past the board was slower for me at times and would time out, but other sites would be okay...but that hasn't happened to me for at least several months iirc.

The mods are in collusion with the First Presidency and your posts have been securely stored in the FP vault. But don't worry, they are as transparent as they know how to be, so you can access them anytime. You just have to say PLEASE!

I've entered posts over the past month where I went to save and they disappeared with no way to retrieve them.  I figured it was either I was too long winded and lost my connection, or my WiFi Nemesis was out to get my goat again.  I don't seem to have a problem when I use my desktop.

Just happened to me, my first very long post with lots of editing in awhile....

It has happened in other ways, but I cut and paste it into text file and then clear the editor when .i notice.  Usually the cause is censorship...usually a drug's name (does not like spam).

Have you tried clicking on "plain text" option?

Some got lost and another's post got mixed in at the top,  a little weird.

nowthat I know what you mk are talking about, I would suggest writing in a text program and than pasting into the board.

edited for off topic spaciness

I haven't had any problems, but in the past when issues like that would happen, i got in the habit of copying my post before posting it, just in case it didn't work.  That way it was really easy to paste it and try again.

It just happened at work too where I'm on Veracity. Site went down for about 10 minutes. Couldn't access it. Then the posts I was working on were lost. I did figure out how to solve the editor cache issue. You have to explicitly delete it otherwise every time you try to post your old post reappears but you still can't post it. Doesn't always work. I had to try about 5 times in the other thread before it took and I could rewrite the post.

That's very weird. It'll be down for me sometimes for an hour and no other site is affected. On Google Fiber in Provo.

I am also on Google Fiber in Provo, and have had plenty of the problem of loss in the past, but my system never goes down.  Just losses.  Same as bluebell, I even took to copying my post before saving, just in case it disappeared.  You may be a special case and need the aid of a Google technician to check your system.

Are you on a PC or a Mac? Because it's happening at work as well on a different computer on a different network (Veracity). I wonder if maybe it's a Safari issue.

I've had no foul ups

That's because there are only 7 people in Canada with the internet.

Do you like Chromebook and Google Docs? I'm thinking about picking up another laptop.  Is the screen as sharp? Is the computer as fast? Do we save all docs in the cloud? Please advise.  Thanks!

Love em both

I am not much of a stickler about Quality of displays though, I suggest you look at a few in the store and see if they are satisfactory.

They boot very fast and yes everything is saved on the web however you have a local copy as well that you can work on without the internet. They operate a little bit differently than Windows and take some getting used to but instructions are very easy to find you simply Google a question and you'll get the answer. They generally do not have as much memory as other types of PCS but they do have USB slots for drives Etc. The biggest drawback I have found is that they are sometimes difficult to make work with printers. They are set up for wifi printing but I find that they will print with almost any printer if you attach a cable. They are supposed to be extremely secure and they have a guest mode if you want to do banking or confidential stuff which is according to my understanding very secure. And of course they have two step verification if you want that and I understand that you can even get a physical key that you have to plug into a USB port before they will boot if you want. Because the operating system resides on Google servers you do not have to worry about antivirus software, it is built in. Google does that and I understand they update it daily but all of that is invisible to the user.

Obviously there has to be something local as well but that is just downloaded while you are working and again it's transparent to the user. And it will sync to all your devices through a Google account if you want so you have your Google Docs and spreadsheets Etc available on your phone. So if you want to do a quick edit of a spreadsheet on your phone no problem.

And you can pretty much forget about updates and all that nonsense with Microsoft. All the little tweaks are transparent to the user but every 6 or 8 months there will be an update which takes about 5 minutes to load and a  reboot, but you always have the option to wait until it is convenient for you to do it which is not the case with Windows. I hate it when you need some information immediately and you have no time left and the stupid machine will tell you it's updating and for you to wait until it is done.

They have long battery life and are just a very fast light computer for General use without a lot of fancy stuff. I have a Windows machine just in case I need to do something huge with big files and complicated software but for all general purpose Computing I use my Chromebooks and absolutely love 'em.  For quick and light and portable they just can't be beat. And the free office suite Google offers is as good as anything for general purpose. If you do a lot of Photoshop or need a big very precise display is probably not for you but for general-purpose computing on the fly it's perfect.

And they are cheap. I have two of them and I think they were both under two hundred bucks each.  They have bigger and more expensive ones with more memory at cetera but for me that's like buying a Mercedes-Benz pickup truck or a gold-plated screwdriver. Cheap and light quick and easy is what they are about. ;)

well, you know what Mark Twain said? God created war so that Americans would learn geography^_^

Unfortunately, geography is generally taught alongside of history. Which probably explains why most Americans don't know where Canada is. ;)

Or as I like to yell at my American friends "Plains of Abraham, Plains of Abraham" (forgotten because they kept losing there)

I know.

Canadia is up. And kiwis are down and over to the left.  Cheesh, you think I am Stoopid or sumptin?

Amuricans r smart. No one else is allowed to go to the moon, and that is why you don't know that Kiwiland is down and to the left.
