Anijen Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Chess tournaments, Classic cars, Beatles Pink Floyd, and Toby Keith as choir. JK Rolling commanded to forever continue writing the HP books. Lawyers smited with forever massaging my feet. Everyone loves my off-key-tone deaf singing. Everyone laughs at my silly jokes. Red Robin and Texas Roadhouse are free. Brigham Young established the infrastructure that enabled the execution of the vision Joseph restored. John Taylor fought to keep it. Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow, and Joseph F. Smith tried their best, used a lot of plausible deniability and political tap dancing to keep things going as long as possible. After that we started giving up. And it's not just about polygamy. Under Pres. Grant the Church began changing and giving up what the early prophets had fought and struggled to establish and abandoning revealed truths.

It would celebrate the total sovereign freedom of the individual. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." It would recognize the the inherent divinity of humanity (or any other sentient life, should we ever discover it). It would encourage exploration, experimentation, and critical thinking in all areas of life and not shy away from the transgressive or forbidden. It would trust people to govern themselves and encourage laws that maximize individual liberty. Edited April 5, 2017 by Tsuzuki

Wait, shouldn't we have had the Second Coming by now if that were the case? A few bumps in the road does not end the journey. God will get us back on course and the Apostasy will never be "Great" again. Prophets are fallible, especially when they claim no revelation behind their decisions. President Grant did his best. He gave the people what they wanted. (Whether it was what God wanted is another question.)
Ahab Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Okay I've got another one now, in addition to the religions I already accept and have proposed. No, wait, they're all just part of the best one that takes whatever is true and good from wherever it can be found while making it all even better. Next step, though, is to either get rid of all need for any money OR gain access to all of the money there is.
thesometimesaint Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Money is a tool which can be used for good or ill. It is not the tools' fault if it is misused.

The point of my new religion would be for me and other like-minded members to be the ones to decide how all money should be used or dispersed, or if any should be dispersed at all. If you had a problem with that, then there would be no more money for you.
phaedrus ut Posted April 5, 2017 Author Posted April 5, 2017 Since I asked this first question I should share my own thoughts. As humans we share something unique. As far as we know we are the only life that self aware of our existence and continues to seek to understand our place in the universe. We have a gift of knowledge. Our brain and our heart inform us that kindness and compassion are good. Give thanks for our common goodness and seek to understand each other to develop communities. Even without a belief in a creator we can understand our actions and words are constantly creating a world that we all must live in. Phaedrus

You need salt and don't have access to it. I could of course just give you my salt. But I need something you have, and we live far apart. I get something I want in exchange for some numbers in my bank account and the person I got it from gets those numbers added to some numbers in his bank account where they stay until he figures out what to do with them and exchanges some of his numbers for that. It's weird but it works as long as people have enough numbers in their bank account to get whatever they want. My religion would simply make the rules regarding the exchange of numbers.

Although it always has its place on the extended road trip etc. I have to say, I am somewhat more partial to the Jerry Garcia with a little more structure to his jams, thanks to the likes of David Grisman. Good observation on the similarities of religion and Deadheadism! You also have the element of worship and the great prophet Garcia. 1

Good observation on the similarities of religion and Deadheadism! You also have the element of worship and the great prophet Garcia. We appear to have very similar musical tastes. First we bonded on bluegrass and now on jam bands, though I hear you about structure. "Dark Star" is to the Dead Religion like the highest temple rituals are to Mormonism The 1st missionary discussion of the Dead Religion would have to be something like Uncle John's Band or Ripple or Truckin' or Casey Jones. Milk before meat, right? 3rd discussion is Scarlet->Fire and China->Rider. Baptismal interview would be Playin->Morning Dew->Playin with a surprise question on Estimated->Eyes. Once you get baptized then we can start talking about St. Stephen->William Tell->Eleven (named because it is in 11/4 time). All this, of course, leading up to Dark Star->Drums/Space->Dark Star. (forgive me, board, for indulging in Deadness... I drive my wife crazy with it, too, sometimes). I really dig Garcia/Grisman. Did you ever see the Grateful Dawg documentary? Also, rather than buying my toddler an annoying CD full of silly kids tunes, I've got him hooked on Garcia/Grisman's Not For Kids Only. Know it? It's a worthy gift to any parent with children. Maidservant Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 I would dissolve every church and religion (and government and . . .). I would nourish communities. I would put aside every ancient (sacred (?) ) text, and I would hand out post it notes that had the following written on them: Kindness Integrity Freedom Redemption I would forget about salvation as a goal, and instead the human destination would be 'harmlessness' (Ahimsa).
