phaedrus ut Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 In February of 2016, an organization known as 92Y, led by Jewish principles, held a series of challenges as part of its 7 Days of Genius campaign. Among them was a challenge to create a new religion. Quote “CHALLENGE FOR A NEW RELIGION - 92Y and On Being invite you to imagine a religious or philosophical framework that cuts across boundaries, strengthens our sense of community and acts as a force for good. Design a framework for a new belief system — or a reimagining of an existing belief system — and share it with us.” If you could invent a new religion what would it look like? Phaedrus

It is also an abhorrent one. As soon as a pedophile or a thief or an abuser slips into your ranks I am guessing your universal love would suddenly be tempered by rules delineating what kind of behavior is acceptable and you will not love them "for who they are" though you may still love them for their potential to be better. 42 minutes ago, phaedrus ut said: If you could invent a new religion what would it look like? Phaedrus If I lacked such humility as to arrogant enough to attempt such a would destroying effort...I would teach and promote the principles of Jesus Christ and hid Apostles. I would ensure that all felt loved, and cherished. I would have doctrines in placed where all would seek to be their best, and the need to repent when they are not. Unconditional love does not mean unconditional acceptance of every sin. In fact for those who would allow for any sin, would cause others to digress, until all self-esteem they may have had would be lost. Jesus Christ, His Church, His Teachings and His love is to call on all and appeal to their better angels, for only there can they find true and lasting joy. "Is this the only way"? "Yes, this is the only way". I would then find someone with great wisdom to lead, certainly not myself...as I would want it to flourish. If we had General Authorities as we do now, I would allow the same as those in the Sevenity to become emeritus status, so that even the Apostles could spend their golden years with their wives, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elder Holland was speaking at our Stake Conference, about how he knows the Jesus Christ lives, and that the restored gospel is true, else why would we crisscross the globe, and away from our families if it were not? So, if I were to be foolish and try an invert a religion, this this would be mine.

I'm answering the question with an understanding that a religion is simply a way of life and that it is okay for there to be multiple ways of life as long as they all contribute to the same end result. Not that there is more than one true church of Christ, but that there are multiple ways for members of his church to live.

I understand, I just began with the opening statement to point out that many "invent churches", and hated to show how serious a matter doing so would be. 1

Phaedrus You would need first to study the demographics of whatever population was going to be approached with the newly designed (invented) religion, and then to decide which of the already well-known leadership and organizational behavior principles ought to be applied to best effect. In other words, the new program would be tailored to a particular population group with its special needs carefully defined. This could take practically any form, and a charismatic leader might be selected to introduce the program. Once the program was successfully introduced, perhaps as a megachurch or powerful socio-political movement, then others might be induced to join through successful marketing techniques (agitation & propaganda, pyramid schemes, social media, missionary work, etc.). Focus groups could be used to test the potential of new programs within this already extant structure, and thus improve it. An appeal to the people as a community could be particularly effective, especially through powerful films and videos. Lehi Riefenstahl comes to mind with her "Triumph of the Will." The only problem with that is (as Socrates pointed out to Phaedrus) that sophistry does not really triumph over truth -- whatever that is -- at least not in the long run. Tacenda Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 A religion that is "come as you are". I wouldn't want it to teach perfectionism. That only leads to problems, no one can acheive it, why try to teach it? A service oriented church, where there are plenty of notices of things that must get done. Correlation is for the birds in this church, so creativity can abound. A church that teaches pretty much the New Testament I guess. I really love the Alcohol Annonymous teachings. Maybe something a long those lines. My brother recently finished an alcohol/drug rehab that included bookwork from AA. Each night it teaches to go over your day and see what went well or wrong, something to get you to figure out the changes you need to make. It also teaches of a higher power. My brother was an Atheist for the better part of his adult life, but recently he spoke at a friends funeral, and when I asked how it went, he told me how nervous he was to speak, his heart pounding etc. So he asked his higher power for some help, and he told me how he felt at peace and was able to get up and speak. I don't know who he thinks his higher power was but it helped him. So I was glad he can give his troubles or get help from that higher power. So my church would definitely include a higher power, but it would be your higher power. I would love to keep hymns in and keep it open for change and additions. I would love for class time to be things that change up and are new that will help in the given times. There really wouldn't be a history to teach since it's new, and I don't feel the need for any patriarchy either, more a group effort. Wow I could go on and on, but don't want to bore.

california boy Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Only sinners would be allowed into my church. No one would be excluded. No such thing as excommunication. The goal of the church would be to draw people closer to Christ. Charity and kindness would be the major focus. No judgement of others, only yourself. Instead of endless meetings telling you what to do, the church members would meet together to do projects that would enrich other peoples lives and thereby enriching their own. Dogma would be very limited, and only based on the words of Christ. No telling others what the words of Christ mean. You would have to rely on the Spirit for that. You would receive guidance only through your own personal connection with the Spirit. The Holy Ghost would be the main teacher. It would be a very personable church that trusts in God to guide people on their path back to him rather than man. Personal revelation is the key to better understanding of what you needed to do. There is no head of the church, only Christ. He directs your path. No one freaks out if their path is different than someone elses path. We all have our own journey. 3

But I understand that you are thinking of being perfect as our church has taught. Which isn't narcissism.
