Duncan Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I was talking earlier with a former Bishop of mine from years ago and he reminded me about the time I got Chiclets from a vending machine creatively I paid for one but it shot out a bunch of packs so I kept all of them and ate my blessings. I felt guilty about it and told him. Now, years later he reminded me about it, jokingly of course. I thought Bishops when they get released have all that junk forgotten somehow? Does that really happen that they forget confessed items? 1
longview Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Maybe he was supposed to counsel you to the specific steps of repentance: recognition, remorse, restitution, etc. Did you return the booty or did you eat them all? If so, you should pay the cash to the vendor and the manufacturer (with interest of course, compounded for the years since). Since the "book" remains open, the Bishop cannot forget.
Popular Post sjdawg Posted March 8, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) I've had a few Bishops say they have forgotten people's confessions over time and a couple others who said they wished they could forget. I'm sure it is like almost anything else - due to sheer volume some memories are bound to blend into the background while others stand out. Maybe your chiclets confession was just too unique to be forgotten. Edited March 8, 2017 by sjdawg 5
Popular Post Darren10 Posted March 8, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 8, 2017 I had a bishop who was very talented with going off on tangents and making them interesting. During a tithing settlement we got onto repentence and forgiveness. Of God he said He didn't think God literally forgets our sins "He's not stupid", my bishop retorted, but that God will never bring up a past forgiven sin in any way that would hinder your eternal progress. In that sense God "remembers them no more". I thought that was a great insight and I think it definitely applies to bishops. 5
Popular Post The Nehor Posted March 8, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 8, 2017 The forgetting thing is anecdotal. I am sure it happens but there is no promise from God about it happening in every case. Plus God is embarrassed that you chose such bad candy/gum to sin with so he does not want to let you forget it. I mean, couldn't you get something good out of the sin? It is like deciding to break the Word of Wisdom by drinking a Bud Lite Lime. Not only are you sinning but you are doing it in a really sad and unfulfilling way so why bother? 5

rchorse Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Bishops' memories are no different than anyone else's. They remember some things and forget others. I think if most had a choice, though, they would choose to forget the details of confessions.
Alan Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I am looking forward to the day when I can go to church, sit with my wife, and be completely oblivious to people's problems. 2

I can remember conversations I have had for all my life...word for word. It drives my wife crazy. 1
thesometimesaint Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I've never been a Bishop, but can tell you all about strategic "forgetting".

Following my brother's first "official" Sunday as a bishop, he came home and said, "Rita, let's just be grateful for our problems!" (She died of cancer last June, so I'm not sure how grateful he is for that, but, then, even though he had to say goodbye to a Rita, he got to say hello to a Dedra, so even though he would have preferred not to have to do the former, he's happy he got to do the latter.) Now, with me, it's more like, "Hello? Hello?? Hellooooo??!!! Anyone? Anyone??? I'm reminded of, I think, an old Saturday Night Live skit where a couple of guys are trying to pick up women. As each one of them approaches, one of them says hello; then, as each of them passes, one of them says goodbye, in a different language: "Hello! ... And goood-bye!" "Buenos dias ... y adios!" Bonjour ... et au revoir! P.S.: And, while I'm sure it will be a relief to be able to lay aside the burdens of being a bishop, if the realizations of the people with whom I've served are any indication, you will miss not having the mantle. And don't forget Mosiah 18:8-10. That applies to everyone, to bishops and to rank-and-file members alike. Edited March 8, 2017 by Kenngo1969 2

pogi Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 12 hours ago, Duncan said: I thought Bishops when they get released have all that junk forgotten somehow? Does that really happen that they forget confessed items? Where does this idea come from? I have never heard it before.

Does anybody know? It must be a fairly well known idea because people seem to know what you are talking about. It just sounds so absurd to me, hearing it for the first time.

Does that really happen that they forget confessed items? The notion that bishops don't remember is a load of crap...I remember every single confession made to me...and their faces...what I probably wouldn't remember were their names...What is worse still and is a little known fact is that in some situations Bishop must share these private confessions with not only the Stake President but also the bishops that replace them....so the confessed sin gets passed on and the privacy of the confession is not respected. Also when someone confesses SSA (hate that term) or anything Gay...they get a permanent " * " put in their file for ever and ever and ever. Edit to Add: Believers should confess to God and NO ONE ELSE...its no ones elses business Edited March 8, 2017 by Johnnie Cake 1
Bernard Gui Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) I have forgotten almost everything except a few really sad or shocking interviews. At the time I wore the mantle, I felt nothing but compassion for the members and hoped their lives would be blessed and happy, and in some way the confessional process could help. I was often reminded by the Spirit that I had been and will be on the other side of the desk and that mercy and justice would be applied just as much to me as to the person I was interviewing. Hebrews 8:12 Quote For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. I think that it got confused with the idea that God "forgets" offenses. Yeah, right. We postulate an omniscient God who knows everything but what we did wrong. A little problem with that, I would say 1
