I can try with all my might, but if you don't want to be one then I can't make us as a group one. Rather I think as we become one with God we become one with others who are doing the same. So in answer to your question: it could be either. If none grow closer to God, none are his. If one or more grow closer than they all who grow closer are his. Edited March 13, 2016 by Rain 4

Or if it was meant to refer to being united or in agreement or in harmony... one WITH what? I'm one with our Lord in some ways and in some other ways I'm only still striving to be one with him but I'm not really there yet. I hope close enough is good enough for more than just horseshoes, otherwise I'm his in some ways but not in some other ways. Maybe as long as I don't give up trying he'll consider me to be close enough to claim as his. 1

"Be one," the Lord said; "and if ye are not one ye are not mine" (D&C 38:27). The only way we can be one is by following the leadership of the Church as the Lord has directed. (Teachings of Harold B Lee) Jesus used this concept about being one when praying for His disciples: "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: (john 17: 20-22) So I guess so long as we are all one in purpose; as long as we have the same purpose or goal there's probbly room for discussion and disagreement.
pogi Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 What makes us one is when we are all striving to do the will of the Father. We don't have to agree on everything to be one. I don't believe that being of the same religion is even required. We are also taught that we need to be perfect. I believe that oneness, like perfection, is a process rather than a destination in this life. Both are a state of seeking and striving to do the will of the Father. We become one in that process and cause. 1

Consider how many people still don't understand correctly how our Lord and our Father are one, even with what John said our Lord said about wanting us to be one in the same way our Lord and our Father are one. It's a little better than just saying "if you are not one you are not mine" but still a little more clarity would be nice. Don't you think? Then we wouldn't have had anybody start a thread like this unless they hadn't read the explanation.

I followed Nehor's advice and looked up D&C 38 where Jesus says these words to Joseph Smith, in verse 27. What is particularly interesting in this context is verse 16, wherein Jesus says, “all flesh is mine, and I am no respecter of persons.” Now follow along as I try to remember that college logic class I took nearly four decades ago, Let's take the statement “if ye are not one, ye are not mine” and turn it into an IF/THEN statement of premise, 'if A then B”, wherein: A = (ye are not one) and B = (ye are not mine). Now along comes verse 16: “All flesh is mine”. “All flesh” would obviously include the “ye” down in verse 27. The statement “all flesh is mine” is equivalent to “not B,” as it is the negation of “ye are not mine”. In other words, according to verse 16, we already ARE His! (If you have any doubt that “all flesh” is as sweepingly inclusive as it seems, remember that Jesus added “and I am no respecter of persons.”) According to my logic class, the following is a valid argument: If A, then B. Not B, THEREFORE not A. Now remember what A was: “ye are not one”. The negation of that would be “ye are one”. So... here it all is, translated back into English: If ye are not one, ye are not mine. But ye are mine, THEREFORE, ye are one! In other words, the statements “if ye are not one, ye are not mine” plus “all flesh is mine” logically add up to the conclusion that “ye are one”! I think this could have some interesting implications. But first, I need to let you know that I flunked that college logic class. So if anybody sees a logical fallacy in the line of thinking laid out above, please point it out. Thanks!
