To Share The Gospel Or Not To Share

Shouldn't we be bold enough to live according to the Lord’s admonishment in D&C 112:5, which states, “Contend thou, therefore, morning by morning and day after day, let thy warning voice go forth; and when the night cometh, let not the inhabitants of the earth slumber because of thy speech.”

And in Jude’s epistle, he told the saints that “it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith, which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3).

Look at what the scriptures say about Paul: “He spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Grecians; but they went about to slay him” (Acts 9:29).

When someone came among the saints proclaiming that circumcision was necessary to be saved, “Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them” (Acts 15:2).

That scripture is Jesus speaking to those in Bountiful when he appeared to the Nephites after His resurrection. He was rebuking them for internal contention about the points of His Doctrine. Context is the key. Caution must be used to apply that scripture to every type contention.

My personal belief is that one must be in tune with the Spirit to testify with the scriptures in a contentious atmosphere. It's better many times to walk away as soon as the Spirit leaves. No good comes of it when that happens. That is why I will rarely swap scriptures in an online forum. It's a tough feeling to gauge when the Spirit is there and when it is not. Others are much better at it than me.

Are Mormons accepting these verses when they don't engage the discussion of Mormonism with others? Why are Mormons often not willing to discuss what they believe with others.

Looking at the footnotes, "contend" has to do with being zealous and not contentious. I would say that it takes some spiritual maturity to dispute nd handle dispute with charity.

The Church as a whole uses the internet to constantly and boldly proclaim our message to the whole world but yeah you can add more to that if you want to and the Church as a whole will always encourage you to do so as a faithful member missionary, maybe also occasionally setting you apart will full-time missions in certain parts of the world. Ask your bishop for more details about how you can do more if you want to. The field is still ripe for the harvest and the more laborers the better. You can still do all you can do.

Pearls and swine. Yeah, I know you are gone but just in case you peep in.

The word contend means to assert a position in an argument.

The word contention means heated disagreement.

That's the difference.

Contention also means "an assertion, especially one maintained in argument."

In other words, a contention is something that is contended.

Sure, but contention is the only one that is heated. Something can be contended without the hatred.

You're not getting the difference in meaning. A contention is an argument that has been contended. So contention, in that sense of meaning, is no more heated or hateful than contend.

The problem is that some people misunderstand 3 Nephi 11:29 (and 30 and some other scriptures).

So in addition to what you're saying there is also a difference between the spirit of contention and the spirit of "a" contention and the spirit isn't always necessarily bad.

We must share the gospel. Sometimes it may be difficult to share because of what other may thing of us. But I give a lot of credit to the missionaries how have taken the bold steps to go unto the world and do just

this. When I was 19 years old, some of my friends were not sure about serving a mission, but before I knew it, they were turning in their papers and being called. It was very exiting! It is not only a blessing, but a

responsibility that we must all adhere to.

Many of the Book of Mormon prophets struggled in their time when they had to spread the work of the Lord. Many were persecuted, and many were killed. But at the same time, many were successful and were

able to bring many back to the Lord. Sometimes these prophets spoke softly, but many times they needed to speak directly and boldly with the people.

In Jacob 1:19 it states - And we did magnify our office unto the Lord, taking upon us the responsibilityanswering the sins of the people upon our own heads if we did not teach them the word of God with all diligence; wherefore, by laboring with our might their blood might not come upon our garments; otherwise their blood would come upon our garments, and we would not be found spotless at the last day.

We must also take every opportunity to teach others so that other understand that they will be held responsible for their own sins, and their sins will not fall upon us. Brothers and Sister, there are many arguments

on why some of us chose not to share the gospel. There are also many reason why we should share the gospel, and the latter certainly has more blessing.

The Gospel is offensive to many and is highly divisive according to the scriptures.  The only time we will have unity, no disputations, and no contention(the bad kind), is not even when we are all the same religion, but when all our beliefs are in perfect harmony. I don't believe this time will ever come, even in the eternities.  In order for there to be progression, there must be conflict.  Consider the war in heaven....

I wish we had more of the words of Peter in the Bible. I think he said it well in 1 Peter 3:

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Very good advise on how to go about in both proselyting and defending the Gospel. Other versions of the Bible interchange "gentleness and respect" or "gentleness and reverence" for "meekness and fear" respectively.

Anti-Mormons do not have lives and have more free time to waste.

In my defense I usually post from work or while standing in line and other dull times. I imagine the evil enemy spends their time hunched over their keyboard all day frothing and waiting for someone to post so they can pounce. Of course they deny it but that is exactly what you would expect them to do if it were true.
