Avatar4321 Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 What are you guys doing to prepare for conference?
bluebell Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I've been praying for those who are going to give talks, that they will be directed to say those things that people need to hear. I'm also trying to think of specific questions that i can pray to hear answers to during conference. 4
Scott Lloyd Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 What are you guys doing to prepare for conference? Here in the office, we are deciding which restaurants we will have cater our Saturday and Sunday lunches.
Duncan Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Same as BB, praying for answers which raises an interesting question, why would God answer my prayer through someone else and not directly to me? If I am interested enough to ask it then why won't God answer me but go through someone else?

Duncan Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Have you never heard that quote that says that it is usually thru someone else that God meets our needs? In Canada it doesn't translate well, it comes out as "princess powder maker can we agree on giraffe butter" but I hear you! Isn't that we get a testimony though? when God speaks to us directly independantly of anyone else? I guess too though faith comes by hearing the word of God and so God testifies to us of what someone else has said and sometimes he speaks to us independantly of someone else 1
Scott Lloyd Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) Same as BB, praying for answers which raises an interesting question, why would God answer my prayer through someone else and not directly to me? If I am interested enough to ask it then why won't God answer me but go through someone else? This question reminds me of a conference talk I heard long ago (1979) from Elder Hartman Rector Jr. The Master said,“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” (Luke 6:38.) When the Master said, “Give, and it shall be given unto you,” this means if you want to receive, you must first give. That’s different from paying tithing where you receive and then give back ten percent. Here, the Master tells us to give first; then we shall receive. “Well, how much am I going to get?” (That’s always the question, isn’t it?) The Lord tells us how much. His words: “good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over. …” Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? He continues, “… shall men give into your bosom.” Men? I thought you said it was the Lord. Yes, it is the Lord, but he always uses men. If you pray for a revelation from the Lord, he will probably send you your bishop with the answer. You really don’t need a visit from an angel so long as you have a bishop. The Lord continues, “For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” (Emphasis mine) Elder Rector was speaking in the jovial style for which he was so beloved by the youth of the Church back in those days. But his words convey a true principle: It is through the instrumentality of others that our prayers are answered. If we pray for something and we receive inspiration through scripture study to meet the need, for example, consider that the scriptures were provided through the instrumentality of mortals. I guess too though faith comes by hearing the word of God and so God testifies to us of what someone else has said and sometimes he speaks to us independantly of someone elseI submit that he never speaks independently of someone else. Our testimony comes in the form of a confirming witness of what we have heard others say, even if it is scripture. The scripture had to have been written down by someone in mortality.
Gillebre Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 My personal preparation for General Conference involves preparing one or two questions for each session that I take with me and then write down inspired thoughts or feelings that come to me. The things I write down become the answers to those questions. It's been incredibly successful for me and I've received much light and knowledge from the Spirit.
The Nehor Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) I pushed back my alarms for Saturday and Sunday to 11. That way I can get it turned on just in time to miss the opening hymn.I also need the second half of Saturday Morning Conference to be better then getting punched repeatedly because I am missing sparring for it.I also need to find a good book to read during the hymns. The Nehor Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Hymns are when you go to the bathroom and get snacks.I can hold it for two hours and since I have limited snacks for the most part to vegetables and fruit there is less of an incentive to eat unless I have peaches or pluots.Note to self: buy fruit this week.....oh....and a spaghetti squash for lunch. I can mix in some tomato sauce and cheese......yummers.
Teancum Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Getting ready to enjoy the weekend? Getting plenty of rest so I don't fall asleep during the talks.... Getting out of town..... All of the above in jest. Nothing special really. I will just listen in as I always do.
Mars Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 i wondered if i had enough data set aside on my wireless plan to listen via the internets during t-ball and soccer tomorrow. as for sunday, i've discovered that mindless fidgeting in the form of coloring or ball throwing while i sit and listen from home does wonders for my attention span.
Duncan Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Hymns are when you go to the bathroom and get snacks. you get snacks in the bathroom? your building must be new!
bluebell Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 you get snacks in the bathroom? your building must be new! I am one of the privileged who gets to watch conference from the comforts of my couch. And conveniently, the kitchen is between it and the bathroom. 1
Ginger Snaps Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Identifying questions to keep in mind as I watch. I generally have a few floating around in my head anyway. It's just how I roll. The answers pop up eventually. That and making sure we have the ingredients on hand for our usual Conference Weekend Monkey Bread
