Howard W Hunter

President Hunter is a man near and dear to my heart.  As proof positive that the antis will make hay out of anything, they criticized him for his reaction after he fell at the podium while speaking a number of years ago: the man simply didn't miss a beat, picked up where he left off, resumed right on speaking, and finished his address. (Presumably, they would prefer that he'd have died of embarrassment first.)  Then, of course, who can forget his reaction at the fireside in which Cody Judy accosted him?  (I don't remember the title of his remarks on that occasion, but the theme was something about persevering through hardships:  Exhibit A?!  Classic!) Mr. Judy may have been adjudged no longer a threat to himself or to anyone else, but he's still a few fries short of a Happy Meal . There's at least one (recent!) video of him attempting to cast the whole incident as merely a big misunderstanding.  His argument is: Book of Mormon = "BOM" =/= Bomb.  (He claims he was referring to the former, not to the latter.)  I've seen that reference fairly frequently ... as written shorthand; I've never heard of anyone (except for Mr. Judy, on that lone occasion in history, apparently) use it in speaking.  And I can't find the reference, one of the Brethren spoke of trying to reach President Hunter and being told, "He's walking to the weekly meeting of the Twelve" .... after he'd spent several years in a wheelchair.  God may strike me down for putting it this way when speaking of one of His Anointed, but ...

What A Stallion! :D

I served in his former stake, where he was bishop then Stake President and saw where he used to live. I have never ever heard one unkind thing about Pres. Hunter.

Wow. I've never seen anything like that. That's heartless. I've only seen praise for his composed reaction in both of those situations.

He was the President that signed my mission papers, so I have a soft spot.

I would post a link to it, but it's a cesspool, so you're either going to have to (a) take my word for it or (b) hunt on your own.

I downloaded the manual as soon as I saw it and have been reading the chapters. It's a shame he served for such a short time as prophet, but maybe Heavenly Father wanted his suffering and pain to end, or really wanted Gordon B. Hinckley to take over the President position. I was amazed how much Howard W. Hunter went through in his life. He was a great man.

Probably my favorite prophet. He sure didn't have that mantle long though.

I hope you know I'd never be the kind of critic like those you mentioned.

I might have to make sure to catch some lessons given out of that manual!

I know.  :)  Whatever our disagreements, you've never struck me as mean-spirited.  Notwithstanding the fact that I have, at times, engaged you with forthrightness, directness, and frankness, I hope you can say the same of me. :)  (I've also tried to give you credit where I think you deserve it.)

Elder Hunter and Haight came up to Vancouver some 20 years ago to create the third stake in the Vancouver area. I was assigned to conduct the music for the priesthood training session and sat on the stand. During a brief break I was sitting beside Elder Hunter and asked him a doctrinal question concerning the meaning of the Church of the Lamb of God. he asked me what I thought it was and I gave my answer. He then said that I was probably right but that if I asked each member of the quorum of the 12 apostles I would get 12 different answers. The next day, some 3 thousand saints attended a conference where all three stakes were reorganized. Afterwords, all were invited to go up and meet Elder Hunter. Elder Haight had gone to Vancouver Island to attend conferences there. When I got to the front with my wife, he remembered my name and remembered my wife's name what I had mentioned to him the day before.

I have a very humorous story abotu Elder Haight from this conference, but I won't share it here because this is a thread about Elder Hunter.

Pres. Hunter was one of my favorites. I loved reading his talks because there was always a lot of depth to them, though he wasn't a very dynamic speaker. Plus, he's the only President of the Church I ever met personally while he was serving in the office. It was my last day at the Church Office Building, and I was coming back from the tabernacle to the COB through the underground tunnels. I was running late, so I was walking very quickly, and just as I passed the entrance to the Administration Building, I collided with the side of his wheelchair. The security guys lunged at me, but he waved them off, shook my hand, and with a smile told me I might want to slow down.

Steve-o,

I'll take your word for it.

Steve-o is very trusting but I wouldn't mind a link. I've never seen anything negative or distasteful about Hunter and these experience. If true, it would be quite dispicable.

Nor have I, and I've been around a few cesspools. :)

It was, you might say, a chance encounter. I literally ran into him. He was wearing a suit but had a blanket over his legs and was on oxygen. It was just a couple of weeks after we'd gone to the viewing for President Benson at the CAB.

I didn't know much about him personally. One of our editors used to make some almond pralines at Christmas, and he loved them so much that he would sit next to her at the Christmas banquet. So, she started making him an extra batch.

My favorite thing about Howard W. Hunter is that he didn't serve a mission - by choice.

Really.   I didn't know that.  Would love to know why and how..and still  "proof positive" that one can be very loving and serving with or  without a mission.

Has anyone said otherwise? Why the straw man?

According to wiki, he chose to get married instead of putting it off until after his mission, perhaps because of the Great Depression hitting at that time. Be interesting to see if the numbers of missionaries dropped substantially starting in '29.

I would assume so. My grandfather's patriarchal blessing said he would serve a mission to the Lamanites, but the influenza epidemic of 1918 and then family finances made it impossible for him to serve, though he desperately wanted to go. I would guess that a lot of young men had to forgo serving missions because of the Depression.
