carbon dioxide Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 The Mormon church is going to Disney World. The church-owned Deseret Ranches is going through the bureaucratic process in Florida to win approval to transform rural farmland, used for 65 years to raise cattle, into a metropolis of a half-million residents within a 133,000-acre corner of Osceola County, not far from Orange County, the home of the world-renowned Disney resort in Orlando. http://www.sltrib.com/news/2709720-155/paul-rolly-mormon-church-moves-to When I first read this I thought it was a joke. But then again it may not be and a great idea. If the claims by global warming prophets are true, a large part of Florida that is currently above sea level will be below sea level. Many people will have to relocate. If this land is sufficiently above sea level, an modern middle sized city would make sense. Perhaps the whole downtown development the LDS Church did in Salt Lake simply was a trial run for something much bigger. 1

carbon dioxide Posted July 10, 2015 Author Posted July 10, 2015 They're building this in case Independence , MO doesn't work out. Maybe Independence was just a distraction for Satan. Make him think its over in Missouri while it is in sunny Florida. 1
Scott Lloyd Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 This strikes me as much ado about nothing. The Church has a lot of land and is looking to divest. As any responsible property owner might, it wants a say in how its ranch property is developed so as to mitigate the impacts on the community. Big whoop, say I. 3
jbarm Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 As most folks know, the Church has a lot of land it owns as investments. The Church entity that owns this land is called Property Reserve Inc (PRI). PRI has two subsidiaries, one focused on agricultural land (Ag Reserves Inc or ARI) and one called Suburban Land Reserves Inc (SLRI) that manages land development for housing and other uses. As urban/suburban growth happens around agricultural land, land gets converted to non-agricultural use. The Church's property management structure is setup to manage this process and maximize the value of the investment it holds in property. This happens with Church-owned property all over the world. It also happens with a multitude of other land investment companies all over the world. This is a sound land management strategy. This is not a sinister plot to set up Mormon compounds in Florida. (I almost ended up working for PRI at one time) jb 4
David13 Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 I think it's a good idea. I should point out that my great grandfather's farm was turned into residential and retail and I'm a quite old man. That meant my grandfather had to move to the city to get a job. As did my father and I.But we all were still farmers at heart.dc

The visitor progresses from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois, then crosses the plains to the Salt Lake Valley. Helps Brigham Young build Zion. Makes his way back to Nauvoo, where he sees the temple rebuilt in resplendent glory. 2

It's composed of Mesoamericaland and Heartland. Attractions include Indiana Jones and the Temple of Bountiful, Mr. Mahonrimoriancumer's Wild Ride, King Noah's Tower of Terror, Shiz's Head Toss game, Follow the Iron Rod, Samuel's Wall Gauntlet, Lamoni's Bumper Chariots, Gaddianton Band Jamboree, Hagoth's Log flume ride, Zarahemla Dreamin', Journey Into the Chromosome, and many more. 3
Tacenda Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 (edited) A theme park about the BoM? I think the church's real estate department is far more sophisticated than that, but I know it was posted in jest. I believe we're getting away from stuff portraying the church's roots and believe the money thing is vital for keeping our temples as they are and other things running. And don't think the cattle industry is as lucrative. Edited July 11, 2015 by Tacenda
canard78 Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Is the "bugs" thread still around? I've noticed the quotes function has fallen over (as illustrated in this thread). When clicking quote it picks up two or three quotes within quotes which then makes it difficult to see what you're actually quoting. It use to just parse out the last comment and quote that. As to this story... Meh... I'd have got worked up about it a year or so ago. These days I just shrug and reckon it's par for the course.

Those are the best in the Book of Mormon.
Alan Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Alternatively, the church could divide the land into lots and give them to the poor and homeless. 1
ERayR Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Alternatively, the church could divide the land into lots and give them to the poor and homeless. And what would that accomplish?
Stone holm Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Interesting, both on this thread and mine on the other forum people are saying things like it would inevitably be developed. It's like we don't need farms or ranches, inevitably we sprout grocery stores where we get food. Agree with Canard though about the shrug.
Teancum Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Alternatively, the church could divide the land into lots and give them to the poor and homeless. Matthew 19:21New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 1

How would they even pay the taxes for the land?Is it better to be homeless and destitute if you are on your own property? Does that provide a measure of relief I'm not aware of?
sethpayne Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Is it better to be homeless and destitute if you are on your own property? Does that provide a measure of relief I'm not aware of? Why don't you come walk around downtown Seattle and ask the folks sleeping on the street if having a consistent and safe place to rest one's head at night would provide some measure of relief. 1

The best farmland in the world and we use it for parking lots and housing developments . . . 3
Tacenda Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 (edited) This is worrisome. He doesn't say build temples with no budget or limits. He doesn't say build me a place to dwell in. If he did I personally don't think of temples. The temple and His sacrifice, is in our hearts. Mother Theresa was single, in our faith she won't be with God. I don't believe Jesus said works in the temple. I do believe he meant works as in loving our neighbor, and that would be taking care of the poor. Of course this is before we had current revelation that trumps scripture in the Bible and BoM, said out of the horses mouth meaning BY and other prophets. I mention these things, because the only reason for the church to try to make money would be to build the temples, etc which are so cherished and what is believed in for salvation. Helping the poor is not top priority. Edited July 12, 2015 by Tacenda

ETA: Or can someone do her work and marry/seal themselves to her. I guess she'd first have someone do her work and then a man will marry her in the hereafter somehow. That sure is a lot of work, where in her church, it's a no brainer that she would be able to live with God. Edited July 12, 2015 by Tacenda
