Kenngo1969 Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Being with my family forever would be my idea of Hades. Being with my wife would be fine, but parents and brothers? no way.Confirmed bachelor that I am, I don't even think in "wife"-terms!
Alan Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 While on a visit to Salt Lake City, British comedian Stephen Fry took a tour of temple square. When the missionaries explained about the fact that we believe families can be together forever he was heard to say "And what do you get if you've been good?" 3
LOSTONE Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 How are you defining family? This really matters in answering your question.I was raised by an adopted family from age 2 ½. They are pure mean and evil and master of mind games. I would of been way better off growing up in the public childcare system in all honesty.I define family not by blood, but by heart. I can have family who I have only known for a short time. So how do you define family matters if family is a good thing or not.
Duncan Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Yes. They at vitally important.eternal families only work according to the principles of righteousness.the beauty of the gospel is not just that we can be families for eternity, but that Christ has the power to change ourselves and our other family members into people who we want to be together with for eternity. if people want to change, but if people are apathetic they won't change-There is a lady in my ward, married in the Temple to a guy who became inactive almost right after and hasn't been to Church in years now. Why they stay together is a mystery to us all. I home teach her and they have this on again off again "relationship", he sees other women. She would be so much happier getting a divorce but she is delusional in thinking that "she signed up for this" and it's frustrating
CV75 Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 This all sounds nice, but how does this relate to me? With the exception of a few people I would rather see a lot of my family die in a fire than be with them forever. Also, well, i'm bi so what happens if I marry a guy? Do I get to be with him forever?Forgiveness is a wonderful, liberating principle, whether it is directed from the Lord to us or from us to others. It is possible to forgive even the worst offenses through the Lord's grace (often not easy but always possible until the Lord says "No"). I suppose everybody struggles with forgiveness; sometimes we have to put the issue on the "back burner" so to speak until we are ready; recognizing the need is a good first step. Same-sex couple sealings are not performed in the temple. But it is possible for anyone to prepare himself for the sealing ordinance, no matter where or when he starts. 1

Honestly, we don't know a lot about how the whole "together forever" concept works once we get past platitudes and sentimental pop song montages. Obviously, the main selling point is based on someone liking their "family" (usually defined as their spouse and children). If that doesn't work (as your case would indicate is possible), we have to punt and rely on the hope that there is some sitaution that will be worked out later in your life (or in the life to come) where you have a "family" (i.e. heterosexual marriage or marriages and children whom you love) for the rest of eternity. So you testimony won't be based on what you have here and now, but more on a hope for the future. And no, if you marry a guy (and you're a guy), then you'll end up in the lower kingdoms of heaven (Telestial or Terrestrial - most LDS would probably say Telestial but it's nicer to say Terrestrial so I'll include that as an option). By all accounts, those are lovely places, and you would still get to be with your husband for the rest of eternity (assuming he is in the same kingdom), so maybe that's what you want to shoot for anyway.
poptart Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 There are no family ties in the telestial kingdom, so there's nothing to worry about.yay! How are you defining family? So how do you define family matters if family is a good thing or not.Honestly, I never really understood the concept of family as mine was very unstable. That, and after having a lot of people turn their backs on me I tend not to trust people in general. Bad habbit I know, but it is what it is. I would say what happened was unforgivable. Yeah, like I said me being in the same room with some of the relatives I hate would be a bad idea, and an eternity of that would be hell. Hmm, yeah not too sure on kids, I had a bad life and am really not the most stable. Also I can have a really short fuse so I'm opting for a childless life. So hetrosexual marraige is the optimum choice? Huh....
pogi Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 If your family is with you in the Celestial kingdom, you will want to be with them no question about it. If you don't want to be with them, either you or they will not be there, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The Nehor Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 If you have a beef with a family member it will sort itself out. If the problem is your fault and is never corrected you will go to a lower kingdom and not be sealed to worry about it. If they are the problem they will be in a lower kingdom. If you are both the problem then you will both go to a lower kingdom and probably be locked into a room together as a penance. And if you can't forgive the members of your family you won't have make it either so if you are still bitter then you won't be sealed in any case.

I'm not perfect, but I can say I didn't diserve to be treated the way I did.
CV75 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I would say what happened was unforgivable.Maybe so, but things change--don't sell yourself short from the healing benefits of forgiveness, whether you decide to take a spiritual approach through Christ or a professional approach through therapists who also apply it (or both).

We both hate eachothers guts and he won't put down the bottle so yeah, thats that. Also, am working on it, LDS family services might be really helpful.

But violence in the Celestial Kingdom isn't that big of a deal, since everyone is immortal. It would be like when Superman fought Zod (2013). Or when Superman fought Nuclear Man.

Doubt they have em there, so we would just start stabbing eachother.

poptart Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 ... and a guy in my Sunday School class thought heaven would be boring.Entertaining to the bystander, but to me pure misery. I had to leave because of it, it was awful, being with them forever would be a horrible thing for me.

It is truly a gift. I suspect that you often find yourself frustrated. :>) Perhaps this story from the last General Conference from Elder Oakes would help you with your frustration (although the circumstances differ) At a stake conference in the Midwest about 10 years ago, I met a sister who told me that her nonmember husband had been accompanying her to church for 12 years but had never joined the Church. What should she do? she asked. I counseled her to keep doing all the right things and to be patient and kind with her husband.About a month later she wrote me as follows: “Well, I thought that the 12 years was a good show of patience, but I didn’t know if I was being very kind about it. So, I practiced real hard for over a month, and he got baptized.”Kindness is powerful, especially in a family setting. Her letter continued, “I am even trying to be kinder now because we are working on a temple sealing this year!”Six years later she wrote me another letter: “My husband was [just] called and set apart as the bishop [of our ward].”2 Edited November 11, 2014 by cdowis 2

Scott Lloyd Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Whomever you end up sealed to in the eternities, rest assured you will want to be with them. Why? Because they, like you, will be celestialized and glorified beings. (This is assuming you remain faithful and true.) 2
The Nehor Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 ... and a guy in my Sunday School class thought heaven would be boring. If you think heaven is boring why would you go to Sunday School? That is like going to school to learn how to do a job you hate. 2
poptart Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Great--I wish you well! (and don't forget that forgiveness can operate posthumously!).Nah, I would rather see him fry over an open flame for all eternity.
VideoGameJunkie Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I want to be sealed to my family so badly. I love my mom, dad, and brother and look forward to the day that we can get the temple work done.

strappinglad Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Suppose , poptart, that your wish to have family members frying over flames was granted and you were put in charge of the roasting. After a while ,through the fire and smoke you hear said members pleading with you to stop the flames. You ignore their calls and make the fire hotter. Some time later you hear the members ask for your forgiveness for all the evil that they had done to you. As absolute master of the flames, you now have a choice. Do you continue the burning or stop it? May I suggest that if you continue the roasting for much passed the sincere pleading for forgiveness, you and your family members will switch places.
