Is Families Forever A Good Thing?

Recommended Posts

Well, heard about eternal families today, is that such a good thing?  Keep in mind I had a really bad family life and if you had me and a few of my relatives in the same room within minutes we would literally be at each others throats probably trying to kill each other.  Don't think an eternity of that is a good idea.

Whatever problems you have with your family here on earth, please remember that you are your Heavenly Father's spirit child, and He loves you. :)  And no, while I must admit that I don't know how Heavenly Father is going to work out all of the problems we might have with our families here on earth, I do have faith that He will.  Whatever our ultimate fate, I don't think God will have to look at us with a shrug and say, "Sorry.  I know you were hoping for better, but this is the best I could do. "  I wish you well.

As it is even the work counselor is recomending a lot of therapy that may take years.  I see these people can can tell a lot of them had way more stable lives than I did.  None of the kids look like they've known hunger or want, just the way they act, they are wanted.  Personally I like the idea of a few of my relatives just roasting over an open fire for all time.  I doubt thats something that will change much even in the great hear after.  God would be too busy tearing us appart and I'm sure he has better things to do with his time than deal with problem children.

Being with my family forever would be my idea of Hades.

Being with my wife would be fine, but parents and brothers? no way.

hmmm, ok that makes sense.

Then you won't be with them in eternity. Even if you should all find yourselves worthy of exaltation changes will be required of each person so each will be loving and accepting of everyone else. Most important will be your eternal spouse.

Combine it with the notion that we will have a perfect understanding and that many of our flaws will be fixed or non existent, I think Families Forever works quite nicely.

Kinship and family are very fluid things throughout the world and within the Gospel. The Euroamerican world generally has a view of family limited to the nuclear one, and others based on consanguineous ties (blood). This is not generalized throughout the world, with some kinship systems consider cousins as the same as siblings, and aunts and uncles the same as parents. In some systems the biological family has no bearing at all with regards to who you refer to as brother, sister, aunt, uncle, father, mother. You also encounter the same within the Gospel. Father Abraham may be rightly called father regardless of any actual blood tie to the man, as full adoption into his family is available and seen as just as valid as a blood relationship. Christ is referred to as the Father of those baptized into his fold, even though God the Father is the parent of our spirits.

What I hope you gather from all this is that the "family" and the "forever family" is not so limited to our blood relationships. I would posit that the family you desire is the family you both create, and receive.

Don't want to say too much, but after what I've been through it would take a lot to fix it, and a big part of me wants to see them fry over an open flame and scream in agony.

Hmm, I would say the anglos, Geranics and Nords as more or less nuclear only, the French, Italians, Spaniards and other latin countries have a more extended view of family.  Sad but true, Northern Europeans have always had lackluster families.  I had a pretty messed up life hence the need for psychotherapy.  fun fuin fun ;_;

Sure, at best, we mortals see through a glass darkly.

My mother and father divorced. My father always speaks of still being able to make the Celestial glory without being married (lowest degree thereof) and my mother can't imagine being re-united with him in the afterlife.

Those are certainly distinct possibilities.

They each accuse the other of instability or mental illness, neither of which is likely the case more than any typical person.

But I have hope and faith that in the afterlife, by the time of the resurrection, they will see more clearly and be healed of the anger and hurt.  It's not guaranteed, but then if it were, there would be no hope or faith...

Good thing for my family, I love them no matter how much they may get on my nerves at times. What better why to show a wife, husband or children how much you love then? Edited by Pa Pa

That's the thing, some come from abusive, even murderous,  families and beyond horrid upbringings but will these people be with you forever? maybe but maybe not. Families forever isn't a free pass to do whatever you want and you'll be with your family for eternity

As I understand it, the main aspect of being a "forever family" is having a spouse with the promise of the capacity for endless children (in heaven), and being sealed into a web or chain of eternal beings like yourself, some being your actual mortal ancestors and family, some not. I would suppose that you wont have to spend any time (if time is still a thing) with anybody that you dont want to. :)

yeah, I know LDS couples that were married in the Temple but they don't seem too happy and I can't imagine God sticking one or two unhappy people together just because they were married in the Temple

You are correct. Heavenly Father will see that we as spouses will only be sealed to a mate that we love. We will be blessed with blissful happiness when we get to that point. For some, that means being with their spouse and family that they had in their sojourn here on Earth. For others, that means being with different people than their family that they had here on Earth.

If we get to exaltation and are able to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus again, we WILL be happy and pleased about who surrounds us, whoever they might end up being. It's impossible to be unhappy in that state of being, and everything will have worked out to the joy of all involved.

Right, if they are unhappy I suppose they wont be forced to be together :)

Yes. They at vitally important.

eternal families only work according to the principles of righteousness.

the beauty of the gospel is not just that we can be families for eternity, but that Christ has the power to change ourselves and our other family members into people who we want to be together with for eternity.

if anyone can do it, Christ can. That's a good reason to have hope.

This all sounds nice, but how does this relate to me?  With the exception of a few people I would rather see a lot of my family die in a fire than be with them forever.  Also, well, i'm bi so what happens if I marry a guy?  Do I get to be with him forever?

There are no family ties in the telestial kingdom, so there's nothing to worry about.

With regards to temple marriages, unless they are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise they will not be valid in the next life.

"All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise,…are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead" (D&C 132:7)

"The sealing of earthly covenants and performances is conditional and depends upon the recipient's personal commitment and worthiness. If a person who has received the Holy Spirit of Promise subsequently becomes unrighteous, the seal is broken until full repentance and forgiveness occur" (Doctrines of Salvation 1:55; 2:94-99).

I think this would cover temple marriages (and all sealings) between people who obviously didn't belong together in the first place and do not practice the attributes of forgiveness, love, and selflessness,
