ERayR Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 It's hard to take the quote out of context when Brigham said the only people who will become gods are those who enter into polygamy. How is it even possible to take that out of context? Somewhere there is one about those who practice polygamy will advance much faster than those who do not. I am not going to take the time today to look it up. Maybe tomorrow.
VideoGameJunkie Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I'll pull up 2 quotes. Brigham Young said "The only men who become Gods, even the sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy" Brigham Young also said "if you desire with all your hearts to obtain the blessings which Abraham obtained, you will be polygamists at least in your faith". It seems polygamy is pretty important to one of the most famous prophets. 1

VideoGameJunkie Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Well the only problem I have is it seems to hurt women. I don't know many women who would be okay with being a polygamous wife either in this life or the next. Does anyone on this board know of women who are cool with it?

Robert F. Smith Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I'll pull up 2 quotes. Brigham Young said "The only men who become Gods, even the sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy"Brigham Young also said "if you desire with all your hearts to obtain the blessings which Abraham obtained, you will be polygamists at least in your faith". So, as Brother Brigham said, "at least in your faith" is more than adequate. 4
VideoGameJunkie Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Interesting. Well I guess if that many women can be on board with it then I can too. I just figured it hurt women.
Robert F. Smith Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Interesting. Well I guess if that many women can be on board with it then I can too. I just figured it hurt women. What about the poor guys who are victimized by it? Abraham and Jacob certainly had their share of difficulties with it, and many an Arab Muslim today will tell you that it can be a disaster. One can be hurt by monogamy or polygyny. Marriage itself is always a challenge, and often in the most extreme sense. 1
JLHPROF Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Interesting. Well I guess if that many women can be on board with it then I can too. I just figured it hurt women. A lot of things God requires of us hurt us in the short term.Let us here observe, that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things, never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation; for from the first existence of man, the faith necessary unto the enjoyment of life and salvation never could be obtained without the sacrifice of all earthly things: it was through this sacrifice, and this only, that God has ordained that men should enjoy eternal life; and it is through the medium of the sacrifice of all earthly things, that men do actually know that they are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of God. When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has, for the truth's sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice, because he seeks to do his will, he does know most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not nor will not seek his face in vain. Under these circumstances, then, he can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life. 2

JLHPROF Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Even on Sister Wives, they may seem cool with it, but say all the time how difficult it is. Those two things aren't mutally exclusive.Saints in history have endured much for the gospel. Just because something is hard, painful, or comes with trials doesn't preclude it coming from God.Just ask the Savior. 2
Calm Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 One of my great great grandmothers stated being in a plural marriage (it was she who told her husband it was time to happen) was the greatest opportunity to learn and experience celestial love in mortal life. She stated she was very grateful to be able to participate in it and was rather scornful of women in monogamous relationships who expressed pity towards her and other women in similar circumstances due to their difficult situations. 2

That is a neat story and I am sure the story behind it is very interesting. I do not think that it was a unique story either.

As far as the "next life" goes, any man or woman who receives celestial glory will have a fullness of joy, and it will not matter in the least to a woman if her husband has more than one wife. If polygamy in the celestial kingdom is a problem for a woman in this life, then she will not receive celestial glory.

Tony Frank Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 CFR please. So, you are taking the position that a woman will receive celestial glory if, when she stands before the judgment bar of Jesus Christ, she tells the Him that she has a problem with her husband having more than one wife in the celestial kingdom. How can anyone have a "fulness of joy" if they are unhappy about what the celestial kingdom is like? There are many Latter-day scriptures in which Christ tells us that we will have a fulness of joy. "But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever." "And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father hath given me fulness of joy." "And whoso is found a faithful, a just, and a wise steward shall enter into the joy of his Lord and shall inherit eternal life." "For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fulness of joy." Even the Bible states in Psalms 16:11. "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

You propose that polygamy is required for a fullness of joy and exaltation. 19th century prophets and apostles have taught this I agree. Has it been codified as official LDS doctrine. And yes personally I think the idea that polygamy is required for the highest reward God has for humans is hooey.
Sanpitch Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 (edited) I think most husbands would be happy to have his wife have four or five other husbands. He could still sleep with her once a week. I hope this hasn't already been discussed. Ed. Why stop there maybe each spouse have several other mates, then everybody is happy. Edited November 27, 2015 by Sanpitch

Way back when I was about seventeen yours old. There was polygamy in my ancestors before my time.

Funny how it was kept so quiet that my ancestors were polyamists. Mom never told me about my famous one featured in the 17 Miracles.
VideoGameJunkie Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 (edited) My family tree goes back to Joseph Smith so I have polygamist ancestors too. In fact I have current relatives who are heavenly polygamists. I have 2 uncles who are sealed to 2 different women. 1 had his first wife die and remarried, and the other divorced in court, but didn't get a sealing cancellation, then remarried his 2nd wife in a civil ceremony, then a few years later got First Presidency approval to be sealed to his 2nd wife too in the temple. That's 2 uncles who are going to be with multiple wives in heaven. Edited November 28, 2015 by VideoGameJunkie
