HappyJackWagon Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I definitely see polygamy as worse than monogomy and I think there are significant differences in the dynamics of child/parent relationships as opposed to parent/parent/parent/parent relationships. With parent child relationship there is a heirarchy between parent and child. With a husband and multiple wives there is still a heirarchy but this time it is between adults. I'm not interested in the slightest. I'm afraid I would need God to tell me directly it was his will and then explain why, and then explain in great detail how to practice it appropriately. I would also need him to explain why it's good for my wife and family. I will not accept vagueries or theory when it comes to such a thing. 3

God may test you as he did father Abraham, Joseph, and Brigham. I was tested, and feared the loss of my wife to a long illness. We did have to consider another woman raising her children and it almost drove me from my faith. This is more than theoretical or vague to me. And I have carefully considered what it meant to my temporal and eternal family. Mercifully there was a "ram in our thicket" and my wife recovered. But not before being sorely tested as to what we would accept what God asked us to do, and the sacrificed we were asked to make.
JLHPROF Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Until then, I'm a happy monogomist both in this world and in the next life. Unless Brigham Young ends up being right...
HappyJackWagon Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 We disavow much of what Brigham taught so I'll just have to ignore this piece of his doctrine as well. KevinG, I'm glad everything worked out with your wife. But "revealed knowledge" about how this all works in the eternities is vague and theoretical.
KevinG Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Unless Brigham Young ends up being right... Since we are not currently required to accept polygamy in practice he's probably going to slide. But I do wonder what the conversation will be like with Brigham for those who outright reject him as being evil or wrong about polygamy. Awkward!

KevinG, I'm glad everything worked out with your wife. But "revealed knowledge" about how this all works in the eternities is vague and theoretical. I personally won't ignore it until D&C 132 is removed or revised. I also won't bash Brigham and/or Joseph as I have heard many modern Saints do. I don't think it is right. I'm also not going to assume you are incorrect in your own conclusion. Perhaps God was preparing me for something different in the eternities, or perhaps he was just helping me appreciate what I have now. He might have even wanted me to understand the founders of this dispensation more fully since I'm a convert. I think perhaps all three are in play.
JLHPROF Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 We disavow much of what Brigham taught Imagine what is taught today that we'll get to disavow tomorrow...
KevinG Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Imagine what is taught today that we'll get to disavow tomorrow... I already disavow green jello with carrots. A huge rift with Mormon tradition I know... but I just cannot reconcile it with my own sense of morality. 3

Blood Atonement Adam-God Polygamy Priesthood ban Not much left for Brother Brigham to reveal, When we wont even believe the doctrine he gave us the first time around. Some people's attitudes toward him seem to be saying that somewhere along the line he went off the reservation. 1
ERayR Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 We disavow much of what Brigham taught Probably to our detriment IMNSHO. 1
JLHPROF Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Probably to our detriment IMNSHO. No probably about it.
Ahab Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 We disavow much of what Brigham taught...I am not one of those included in your "we".Prophets don't disavow anything taught by other prophets, and I am as much a prophet as any other prophet of God. 1
ERayR Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 No probably about it. Sometimes I have a gift of understatement.
Jeanne Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Imagine what is taught today that we'll get to disavow tomorrow...Been through that already. Just the past 10 years some of us has had to disavow teachings because of changes made within the church and its history.
HappyJackWagon Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I am not one of those included in your "we".Prophets don't disavow anything taught by other prophets, and I am as much a prophet as any other prophet of God.You don't have to include yourself in the "we" if you don't want. I used "we" as meaning "we" in the church since the church has disavowed Adam God, Blood Atonement, Priesthood Ban, and the essentialness of polygamy for exaltation. You can defend those teachings if you like.

Does the church still teach Adam/God as was taught by Brigham Young and taught in the lecture at the veil in the endowment ceremony? Does the church continue to teach blood atonement? Did the Race and the Priesthood Essay not "Disavow" the racist theories taught to explain the priesthood/temple ban?Does the church still teach that man will never set foot on the moon?Is it still essential to acquire multiple wives to achieve the highest level of the celestial kingdom? Your position is impossibly silly. I can't believe you actually think the church has never disavowed or distanced itsself from teachings of former prophets.

HappyJackWagon Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Exactly! Thank you for phrasing that well.I like sarcasm. JKWilliams nailed it. But I don't think you got it.
Rivers Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Polygamy would need to exist if there are more women than men. Polyandry would be necessary if there are more men. 1
jkwilliams Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I like sarcasm. JKWilliams nailed it. But I don't think you got it. Given that he understands the doctrine of the Trinity better than Catholics do, I figured he must know the teachings of the prophets better than the rest of us do.
Ahab Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I like sarcasm. JKWilliams nailed it. But I don't think you got it.But I did get it. And it is still true.
busybee Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 "The very women that object to a plurality of wives would not object to a plurality of husbands." (Brigham Young, April 16, 1860, The Complete Discourses of Brigham Young 3:1570.)Sorry, but at this point in time, I very much object to both!!! 2
Ahab Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Given that he understands the doctrine of the Trinity better than Catholics do, I figured he must know the teachings of the prophets better than the rest of us do.It would be more correct to say that I correctly understand better than the Catholic church teaches how God as a kind of being includes a Trinity of 3 persons in unity. It would be nice if "the rest of us" were as united.
